For anyone curious on that first A339, they left the gear down for brake cooling. This is completely normal and would have been discussed in the takeoff briefing.

Why were the wheels still down? I thought wheels go up on positive rate of climb.

I believe the most common reason the gear doesn’t go up right away is that they simply forgot. I’d imagine they were momentarily distracted by something (like a sudden gust or windshear-it was a windy day) and lost their normal “rotate, positive rate, gear up” cadence. No real harm done, and they probably quickly realized something wasn’t quite right and put the gear up at that point.

Brakes needed to cool off, happens with the 330s often enough.

Typically happens if they have had a lot of taxiway to traverse with stops or LUAW. Most typically the brakes are heating in hot weather so its a bit odd but it would not be a matter of forgetting. Checklist take care of that@@twincitiesaviator

Ah, that makes sense, I didn’t know that about the 330’s brakes. I love learning about the specific quirks of various aircraft. I’ve actually only heard of the gear being forgotten on a missed approach/go-around because the pilots have a lot going on, and they generally don’t have to do that very often.
