Barrett was a genius but clearly something happened to him at some point that changed him, maybe temporarily, maybe permanently. Whatever it was, I believe he was still lucid enough to decide for himself to walk away from music for good so that's what he did. (And lets face it, how long could anyone stand to be around Roger Waters for any length of time? Unquestionably a brilliant writer but seriously unlikeable). Who knows what he could have achieved if he'd stayed the course a bit more - 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' is a wonderful record and my favourite Pink Floyd album - but sadly we'll never know.

I don't know, NONE of the guys in pink floyd ever kicked roger out, he left. So obviously being around him wasn't that tough. Most people said he was friendly enough as a person, and even as an employer so long as you worked, he was fine. All the people who have worked with him for the most part have never complained.

@@mikearchibald744 Point taken but I suggest you dig a little deeper into the Pink Floyd story and you'll find plenty of evidence to back up my observation. Especially from David Gilmour. It's not uncommon for band members who don't get on to tolerate one another for a long time as long as they keep coming up with good songs, eventually though they reach a point of no return and one of them will have to walk away.

@@muzzy1978 Well, you just argued AGAINST your point. In fact in one of his songs on Division Bell Gilmour sings about 'reaching out to my enemy, and they tell me to please go *&^% myself". Thats clearly Roger and I read that he in fact reached out to Roger for Roger to REJOIN the band, for the very reasons you mention. There is little to no evidence that Syd left because of a dislike of Roger. When Roger tried to shut Pink Floyd down in the eighties a guy who lived by Syd said he heard him screaming "I hate Roger Waters". Thats most likely because the guy wrote a song LITERALLY calling him crazy, making a normal life almost impossible if he wanted it, and becasue of course Syd came up with the name. I'm no expert but have heard a LOT of the Syd story and there is virtually NOBODY who knew him at that time who would use the word 'lucid' in any way to describe him.

They're literally a photo of Syd Barrett at Abbey Road Studios during the recording sessions for WYWH, really not much to dispute about the truthfulness of that. And he looks like a completely different person in that photo so it's really not that odd to think his old bandmates wouldn't recognize him, especially given that they hadn't seen him in 5 years.

Except they had seen him, at least up until late 1973 he was visiting David Gilmour and Rick Wright at their homes, at that time Syd had returned to London and was living in a suite of rooms at the Hilton. Ginger Gilmour has gone on record that Syd recorded in David's home studio in 1973. And Syd's last recorded sessions were at Abbey Road in 1974. Syd was *invited* to come to the studio during WYWH for David and Ginger's wedding reception at Abbey Road during the making of WYWH. He went to visit Storm Thorgersen and then showed up a day or 2 before the reception to see everyone, that is when they claim he showed up "unannounced". He visited multiple days, at least 2, possibly 3 (as reflected by the photos, 2 of which were only released in the last decade and he is wearing different shirts in all of them. The original photo was taken at the reception and the other 2 are from in the studio). It's complete nonsense to say no one knew he was coming or that no one recognized him.

I think I would believe Rick Wright and Joe Boyd that Syd did wreck himself with acid and had mental issues. He was also a bit lazy and didn’t care to have to be on the pop treadmill doing TOPS. So, I believe that the myth is a bit exaggerated and there were others factors beyond the acid and Mandrax, but he had a number of complex issues. Certainly losing his father at an important age had to be devastating as well. If he had wanted to go off and be an artist he would have done it in 1968, but kept recording a bit through 1974.

I don't know about that....he remembers the experience as "the worst." Twink is a Syd fan boy. The truth is somewhere between the two accounts but I've read about the disastrous gig. Syd would have done better singing his songs in folk clubs not having to compete with loud instruments and stoned sound engineers. You can never hear his voice in live recordings. You can barely hear him chunk away on those boogie band recordings....the great guitar on that was from Fred Frith. Fantastic guitarist in Pink Floyd for sure and an influence on many of the "greats..." The microphone always seemed to be turned off when he was singing.

Syd was dropped from the band because he became too unreliable on and offstage. He had become increasingly erratic which was detrimental to an extremely ambitious group of friends. A lot of what Twink is saying here is BS. Twink didn't know Syd long enough to make such comments.

Indeed, he recorded Barrett /Madcap Laughs and they sound flipping terrible. Not even close to his work with Pink Floyd. Good songs, but they were a big mess those recordings. With all do respect to Twink, many friends and associates of Syd's said these so called "rumors" happened. We know how things turned out in the end. Agree that Syd got a raw deal, they should have tried harder to rectify the situation.

Ok so with due respect This version is very odd and different to every other account. Syd was not in an od coma but extremely unreliable to play live. It was his ex band mates who helped him to put together his wonderful solo albums.

You need to do your homework. Waters & Gilmour were called in BY Syd to finish the album and EMI gave them literally 48 hours. That’s why half the album is brilliant and half sound like half finished ideas. They were because after 1.5 years Syd didn’t get the extra time.

I don't get this from Twink. Barrett had serious mental health issues - beyond drugs. He suffered from emotional swings, even violent ones. His third solo album never got completed and when with Stars, he only played a few gigs with them. As for Wish You Were Here, when he turned up at the studio he had put on loads of weight and shaved his head. He was photographed by Phil Taylor, and he really did look completely different. You can find the photos easily. Syd was artistically special, but I think Nick Mason got it right when he said that Syd didn't want to be a pop star. When he did his art, he called himself Roger (his real name), not Syd. They were like two different personalities. I think it is too easy to spend time talking about the Rock Star in the context of the music industry, which musicians are often wont to do, and forget the person with problems behind the stories. Syd is one of many people both of that era and even now who don't get enough help.
@robitaillecopeland1996
@robitaillecopeland1996 7 ай бұрын
It's all embellished. He just liked to play music with his friends locally in the "scene". Waters (and later David) were very ambitious and they felt Syd didn't take it seriously enough, which was true. He was getting in the way of them becoming rich and successful. They used his supposed "bad trip" and going crazy as an excuse to justify kicking the sole creative force behind their first album off the band. They then limited his contributions to the 2nd record by leaving two very deserving Syd songs off of it. Then they sabotaged his solo albums so it proved the "he went crazy" narrative. Despite that, they're better albums than anything any of the other four ever put out. No backing band, no tours to promote, shoddy support from the label and multiple producers. Of course a hearbroken Syd got angry and depressed. His mates stole his band and then sold a b.s. narrative that he was crazy to the world and the world believed it. I'm sure he had issues but who doesn't. I've heard enough interviews with people not associated with Pink Floyd and of Syd himself after the breakup to know it was all concocted and embellished by the band. The icing on the cake is Pink Floyd would continue to use Syd and him going crazy to sell millions of records. He inspired all of their records both in lyrics, theme and tone. They really did the man dirty.

I'm calling bullshit on Twink. Thinking that decades of time have spun his perception to be a bit biased in a positive way towards Syd. If Syd was not problematic, why didn't Stars work? Why were there the stories about how painful it was to record his solo records, and how he couldn't seem to properly play guitar? Like, we all know Syd was not normal. Way too many stories and way too much proof out there (the Meatball interview, and, heck, his solo records all have moments of lucidity but sure have a lot of crap_)

Twink is ignoring reality here a bit. Barrett had massive issues later on and unfortunately his own family conceded this as well. He was diagnosed with a Personality Disorder in the early 80’s after his family had to have him briefly committed, I wound also argue that Twink didn’t know Syd as well as the other musicians in Floyd or Barrett’s family obviously. A nice guy but ignorant to dismiss reality.
