As a non-profit Director THANK YOU for this! There are so many ways that non-profit funding and giving can be manipulated and transparency is so key. One note about Charity Navigator and some similar sites, they are such great tools BUT often don't start fully evaluating non-profits until you hit a threshold of $300-$500k. But truly never be afraid to ask an organization to look at their financial reports or go to their Board meetings if you are considering donating, especially for large gifts. Any non-profit unwilling to be transparent is 100% a major red-flag and should be approached with caution.

I went to a private Christian high school. Every year we'd have a campaign called DAW/DAD Which means "dollar a week" "dollar a day" And all the students would have to COLD CALL pass alumni, past donators, and church members to ask them to donate a dollar a day/week to help keep our school going For 2 weeks out of the school year, the students were literally used as a call center to collect money for the school It was crazy

I know this probably isn’t a new suggestion but with grant’s degree and experience he could probably teach theology and religion. My brother has a theology degree but isn’t religious and he’s taught at state universities several times. It’s not usually a long-standing position but more experience brings more opportunities. And lots of students are looking to learn about this stuff from a non religious lens. I think grant would be a great teacher about that stuff.

I don't have any money, but if I did, Twinnuendo is the only church I'd donate to. Theramintrees, a former Christian and current(?) therapist, makes KZbin videos about religious abuse and trauma. In one I watched recently, he said people who escape abusive situations may binge content about trauma and cults because it reflects their reality, which has been systematically denied. That's what this podcast does for me. Stay safe, Grant! Sending all my good energy

Speaking of church and stairs, when I was about 9 I fell down 3 flights of stairs in a church once. I was totally fine and more shocked that I made it down all three flights without stopping. It was a staircase that went from the foyer up to the 2nd floor of the steeple, so the stairs were a narrow U shape with no true landings between top and bottom. Surprisingly, not the most embarrassing thing that has happened to me in a church.

The thing that always got me about churches being tax free is that there’s supposed to be a separation of church and state, but the government has a list of officially recognized religions and only those religions receive tax exempt status. So the government gets to decide which religions are legitimate enough to be tax exempt, and we’re supposed to call that a separation of church and state? They should all be taxed equally in proportion to their overall wealth, and they should have to report all earnings

I grew up Unitarian Universalist. My mom was on the board and there definitely was no game, it was volunteer and nobody was making money. They were probably too disorganized to run a scam on people if they wanted to, lol. I'd encourage Grant to check it out. A lot of UUs are ex-christian parents who are looking for a family friendly community where you aren't told exactly what to believe. There's a vague list of Principles, but you don't even have to agree with them all. It's not necessarily even 'spiritual' at my congregation there were people with a wide variety of beliefs about the world including strictly Secular Humanists. They do use a lot of terminology stemming from Christianity, since it evolved out of Christian churches, so that could be triggering for you. There are still a small number of Christian Universalist and/or Unitarian churches in the US, but I don't think any congregations in the UUA consider themselves Christian or have a specific theology.

growing up in the UCC sometimes the episodes are hard because the same words and terms describe two different gods, two different doctrine, and this can bring stress knowing these evil people are weaponizing gods love for evil. Fundamentalism is in the same boat as Scientology. i am blessed to never have been fed the false fundamentalist gospel. im so incredibly sorrry christ has been tainted forever for you both.

So the cousin called M & told her what happened & said the woman had also given her a card with her name, her church name, and contact # on it. M was really freaked out but I told her this is a scam the church is running to ultimately get more money! I looked them up & the “leader” calls himself a prophet and one review said he checks his PayPal during services to see how much he’s been sent. Sick.
