Growing up going to a catholic middle and high school in Puerto Rico the only thing they did that was similar to "restrict" what we watch was telling us not to watch Pokémon because apparently they were demons and so was Hello Kitty. Grate pod as always ❤(I was truly audibly gagged with that love seat story, and I had to gather myself cuz I'm at work and people are looking at me 👍)

I also grew up in a very religious household (the Mormon variety though) and it’s shocking to think back on what I believed/was told was true. I distinctly remember learning that (cis) men have the same amount of ribs as (cis) women when I was in high school. Up until then I believed that men had one less rib because Adam gave a rib so that Eve could be created. It was a very humiliating experience and I must’ve been perceived as an idiot by my peers. Another very humbling memory in high school came during the throes of my depression. The psychology class was doing a survey asking if the students were pro life or pro choice. I didn’t know what that was and since I was dealing with EXTREME depression my brain was like “well we don’t want to be alive so I guess we’re pro choice” and marked pro choice as my answer 💀 I bet you can guess where a majority of my depression and anxiety was coming from as a closeted person back then 🙃

We weren't allowed to watch Scooby Doo, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Land Before Time, Dora, Barney, etc. Three of us are close in age, and my brother is the oldest of the three, so my sister and I would just watch what he put on. @AnaMusingsАй бұрын
I know from IMHO that Darby watches kdramas and I was so looking forward to his take on It's Okay to Not Be Okay, it was my first ever kdrama I watched when the pandemic started. I does have problematic stuff, but the chemistry of the two is amazing, and I was hooked forever. If you want more details on what to watch, there is mydramalist, I made an account to research more about them and talk to like-minded ppl who love dramas, not just from Korea (there are like 7 countries represented - Japan, Thailand, you can find them listed somewhere). There are so many genres and you can definitely find non-violent ones, but I would encourage to test the waters yourself, besides, I started some dramas and dropped them very fast, and 2 years later I gave them another chance and absolutely loved them. So it also depends on what you are in the mood for. Me personally I love the fantasy genre, where there are _some_ fantastical elements to it - like one of the funniest I watched is My Love from the Star (mydramalist.com/7398-you-who-came-from-the-stars), where the male lead (ML), the same actor from It's Okay to Not Be Okay is like an alien that lived as a human for 400 years and the female lead (FL) is an actress that is trying to revive her career, she is the funniest ever. A lot of these dramas are a good mix of everything, and sure, there are those violent and over the top, with school bullying or the scandalous lives of the rich, but you can find what you like - there are plenty of free resources online to watch them (even some free on youtube, with shorter format and more non-main stream content, like lgbt+ themes as well). Let me know if you want more information or talk about kdramas - I would usually ask more questions about what ppl like before making recommendations for them, that's why I didn't jump at you with stuff rn :) Have a great day!

My parents loved Focus on the Family, so they used plugged in to decide if we could watch things. I remember going to see V for Vendetta in theaters with my friends when I was 18, and coming home and was interrogated about supporting terrorism by my uncle who was visiting from out of town. Somehow I’d managed to see it before they looked it up. But my parents also went by what they were told was bad- so no Simpson or Harry Potter, but I did read all of the Golden Compass books at that time where characters have familiars (called daemons) and spoiler alert, ends with them killing God.
