Hearing horror stories of school experiences breaks my heart. I teach high school in a super, duper liberal bubble and it's a dream. I love my colleagues, the admin, and the kids are, yes, pains, but I thoroughly enjoy being a teacher. Kids are openly queer, we have the rainbow flag and trans flags up in the student lounge, and a rainbow crosswalk outside. I wish you both had better experiences, but especially Drew. Although, trauma builds character 😅

Lucky you have a good admin and support for diversity at your school. There are good teachers out there. There are teachers with passion for what they try to share with students in hopes of making lives richer. Teenagers are a special breed so just like with any age group there are great kids and tough kids. We need good people in schools. Fingers crossed for some sanity to be protected in education. So underfunded and yet so many people who put their heart into it and give all they can.

@@rubyk.1506 It's definitely an emotionally and mentally demanding career choice. There is really no "down" time, even during breaks. I was marking and planning throughout winter break! I'm really worried about what's going to happen to education in the next 4 years...

I also had a mean middle school teacher die of a heart attack!!! She was awful. The day she died she was supposed to have a parent meeting with my mom. Woman was a chain smoker. Smoked all through recess duty and lunch. She died having a heart attack on her doorstep on her way to work. Hated her because she called me names and hit me. This was like 1988/89. I went to St.Michaels school k-8. Never had art class until I was 14 in high school where guess what, the teachers hated my neurodivergent arse. Now I’m a middle school art teacher where I promise NEVER to be a teacher a student wishes 🪦

Ugh have that same hyper social vigilance Darby, especially when walking around my college campus. I’ll get so worked up for no reason about people blocking walkways and, conversely, get mad at myself when I take the wrong turn and have to turn around (getting that full body wave of embarrassment feeling). Thankfully I can recognize when that anxiety comes up now and chill out/laugh about it, cause it truly is ridiculous to think that other’s should know where I want them to go and that they know where I’m wanting to go.

I keep string lights all year in my room! It’s super nice. We keep them downstairs in winter, too. Apparently, the actual 12 days of Christmas, of the famous song, is from Christmas Eve until Jan. 6th. And THAT DAY is when you’re supposed to (originally I guess?) take everything down. And people used to only put their trees up ON Christmas Eve, then by the time they were shedding and getting gross, Jan 6th came around and you took it down. Though that could just be according to my mom, and she only told me that this year, as I’m in my 30s lol.

Hi, this rule of taking xmas decorations down on Jan 6th exists almost unanimously in Brazil, because according to the quirky mythology of Christ, that's the day the three wise men got to meet Jesus. So Jan 6th is "Dia dos Reis Magos"(day of wise men) and traditionally is when we put all decorations down, since by then everyone got to meet baby Jesus.
