I'm 62 years old and I was in the Navy when I was 17 and stationed in Italy. Journey was at the height of their success. I remember thinking then how blessed I was to be alive and young during that time because surely music could never get better than this (rock was at its appex). Turns out I was right.

I saw Journey live. Can you imagine what it takes for a singer to continue with awesome vocals as he is running around on the stage through the whole concert? Steve Perry will always be my favorite male singer. " THE VOICE" of my generation.

Lead guitarist is the legend himself…Neal Schon. He’s still out there ripping that guitar to this day. Saw Journey live in 1983. There wasn’t a stadium they couldn’t sellout. Live in Houston 1981 they were in their prime here. Love watching a new generation discovering the music I heard as a teenager on my radio everyday. More Journey please…they are still my favorite band after 42 years.

Steve Perry AKA “The Voice” is always amazing. I had the privilege to see them in concert three times and every time they sound as good as the album. One of the greatest bands of all time. Pick an album that has Steve Perry, then pick a song off of the album and you will not be disappointed. Great memories. 😁👍🫡

When I heard this song for the first time back in 1981 I would have never guessed in a million years that it would still be relevant over 40 years later. I agree it's a well-crafted, well-performed, and uplifting song and one of my favorite songs of all time. I saw Journey live in Charlotte back in 1985 and this 1981 Houston performance was not a fluke. I'd love to know why it resonates with younger people since this song is so anti-modern. It's a pretty simple mix, no drop, and you don't even get the main "hook" until very late in the song. As for the tank tops c'mon guys it was the 80's!! You would have been wearing them too!! You should def get some for your next Journey reaction.

As others have mentioned, the guitarist is Neal Schon. A tune I HIGHLY recommend is "Mother Father" from this same concert (Live in Houston - 1981)... Steve Perry hits notes at the end that will blow your mind, Neal Schon has a guitar-shredding solo, Jonathan Cain kills it on the piano, and Ross Valory (bass) and Steve Smith (drums) rock it as well. By the way, I had the good fortune of seeing Journey back in the Steve Perry era about a half-dozen times.

When a went to the Meadowlands NJ show in 1981 and Steve was hitting these notes on every song i knew i was witnessing something special and extraordinary. And by the way at the Meadowlands show Neil the guitarist was hit in the head with a beer. We thought that the show was going to be terminated. Thank God it went on. Of all the shows ive seen that vocal performance was tops.Steve was at his peak.

Saw them 4 times in the 80s… always perfect! Steve contributed so much more than just his voice to that group! He actually constructed this song, leaving the chorus till the end.. His co-writers were asking..”chorus now?” ..Steve replied.. no not yet.. Make ‘em wait for it” 💞 The group is still out there, but they are nothing like they were with “The Voice” of #StevePerry 💞 Great review guys 😊

I've been a long time Classic Journey, and I'm very grateful to have seen them live in concert! Journey played in Houston, Tx in 1983 for their Frontiers tour. They had 3 sold out shows. 2 of which I attended and then I saw them again in 1986 for their Raised On Radio tour. And then for Steve Perry's first solo tour in 1994. Journey back then were amazing in concert! However, Steve Perry is a Great Showman!!! He and the band just makes you feel as if you are the ONLY ONE there!!! Steve is known for making the concerts so personal! Ex.....I know he did at the shows I went to. Where he'll asked the lightmen.....'HEY turn the house lights on, I want to see my friends!! Yeah, there we go!!' And then he'll point making you feel as if he spotted you!!! He's also know to do the 'search'!! Meaning he'll put his hand over his eyes like he's searching for you!! And as you heard, he likes to change the Detroit, to the city they're playing in! You just can't go wrong with any Classic Journey songs!!

Guitar is Journey co- founder Neal Schon, a child prodigy guitarist who joined the Rock Band Santana at age 15 playing with legendary guitarist Carlos Santana. He and keyboardist and lead vocalist for many Santana hits Gregg Rolie founded Journey. Steve Perry was not the original lead vocalist for Journey. It was Robert Fkeischman. Steve joined the band in 1978. Escape and Dont Stop Believin waa released in 1981. The song wasn't the biggest hit off Of Escaie it took off almost 30 years later featured on the hit show the Sopranos and in the film Monster and just received entry into the Library of Congress for its songwriting and influence on pop culture. It is also the number one song download to I Tunes.

I saw these guys along with almost every group from the Beatles thru the mid 70s with Grand Funk and more than I can list. They LOVED DETROIT and Detroit in my days was the center for music, period. Motown started it going and IF YOU STUDY it you will see how many great groups/entertainers came from Michigan. Journey was NOT one of them but they L.O.V.E.D. DETROIT. In fact this song was written by Perry looking out of his hotel room in Detroit. He said he saw people below walking through the streetlights looking like shadows and it inspired him. The words to the song actually go "Just a small town boy, born in raised in South Detroit" (which FYI there is NO South Detroit, there is a area called Downriver)THEY WERE AWESOME. In my day we had great music, great entertainment. No Autotune, No great sound enhancements, NO back up tracks. You went out played your best and it wasn't correctable if ya F'D up. You had one shot at the songs. Mixing Board could only do so much. Just RAW AWESOME TALENT
