MD2020 - voltage regulator, battery and alternator charge test

I got the charging alarm this morning 11.00 on first start after winter on MD2030....I did not dare turn up the revs unsure what the problem was. I looked up the alarm and was getting ready to check all cables etc and came across your video .....sure enough it was the same problem ....700RPM ...I adjusted the screw to 800 RPM and no more alarm at 14:00 ...you made my day Tino , without your input this could have taken me a very loooong time as cables nor alternator were the culprit , Thank you very much !

Tino, congratulations for the tutorials, they are perfect. I have the same boat and I have problems with the battery switch, it seems impossible to disassemble. do you have tips?

Absolutely love your videos Tino! I have almost the same boat and have fixed several similar issues after watching your stuff. So thanks. One thing I was wondering is it possible for me to simply swap out my old batteries with new Lithium batteries (LiFePo4) without messing with new alternator and wires +++?

If you connect the alternator directly to the LiFePo4 battery you will burn down the alternator due to overheating. You need a charge controller between the alternator and the lithium battery.

You need a DC to DC charger wich means a box who control the current from the alternator to the lithium batteries.

In the video I take the measurement from the wire there is coming from the battery splitter box. Which means you have a wire from the alternator to a box there is splitting the starter battery and the house banks.

I noticed your hour meter did not seem to work. Mine was also not functioning on the MD2020 which seems to be a common problem - I have recently been able to repair this fairly cheaply with a new display unit, an easy task. Could provide you with source of display and repair instruction if interested.Tom

Good explain about ajustment, but, is possible ajustment the voltage regulator in alternator?

The voltage regulator is a sealed unit, but the alternator must also spin at some rpm to generate voltage and cooling to it self.

Great Tutorial, but something seems strange in this video. In the first part you reach 14V only at 1200rpm. And the in the in the second part you adjust the idle speed to 850rpm and you reach also 14V. How is this possible?

It is due to the alternator starts charging at 800 rpm. and not 700 rpm there was the idle at the first test.

Alternators have to excitement the stator before it charges a out 800 rpm. Odysseus
