hi Tino your instruction videos are excellent. We have a 2004 B32- i think the same as yours. REALLY PLEASED WITH IT. This weekend i tackle the exhaust elbow, heat exhanger cleaning and coolant replacement. Would not have thought about doing it without your brilliant videos to follow. many thanks. Nick C

thank you, very helpful. It's on my to-do list. I have an MD2030 but without a coolant overflow set up. I think I should install something like that. It makes me nervous not to have anything at all for overflow. I don't know why the engine in 1999 was delivered that way.

11/16 8 point socket will fit the drain plug in standard size ;)
@twiper
@twiper 4 жыл бұрын
I have tried other types of sockets and they all slip. The problem is the plug is very tight and the horse shoe mount is the way to go. The plug type is also known as a gearbox drain plug. If you use the wrong socket you will destroy the plug top and round off the corners so it will be near impossible to remove.

Try to search for "Drain Plug Socket Set" the one I use in the video is a 3/8" with a 10mm. square hole. If you are from Europe you can find the socket at Biltema.se and it is called "hästskobrodd".

Tino - thanks, as always a really useful video. I'm having real problems getting the plug out on my engine having rounded off the corners of the square head, I've got some Irwin grip nut remover sockets which I think will work. Can I just check that the drain plug is solid not hollow on the inside and it's made from steel not brass ? I don't want to risk breaking it and ending up with a real problem. You've got a little bit more room on your Bavaria than I have on my Jeanneau.

If your drain plug has a damaged top you need a new one. A common thing people do is to turn the wrong way to unscrew, be sure you turn the plug the right way when unscrewing. If it is very stuck you can get a special tool to heat up the plug, it is in a way a big soldering iron made to loosen up bolts. The plug is tight but not crazy tight. If the plug top is totally damaged it is possible to weld on something so you can turn the plug.

@@twiper Thanks Tino - welding on a nut is probably the next step ! My plan is to fit the VP faucet (one of your other posters very helpfully listed the part number) so I don't have this nightmare again.

Great Video, I have a MD230 on a 2004 Bavaria 36 with same setup. I am having a hard time removing the coolant cap on the heat exchanger, I can twist and turn the cap to loosen it, but when I lift it only goes up a little feels like it gets stuck.. I don't want pull too hard any thoughts?

Think you must press it down and turn it a bit more before you pull it up.

Hi Tino, Thank you! Your videos are really informative. I have a Bavaria with a similar D1-20 engine. I was wondering, how do you change the coolant in the hoses to the water heater? Should I disconnect the hoses at the water heater (which are lower) also?. Or is the remaining amount of old coolant in these hoses so little that i can skip the hassle
@twiper
@twiper 2 жыл бұрын
Normal I don't think it is necessary to flush out the water heater hoses, only if the coolant system is very dirty. If your engine gets it's very first coolant change it could maybe be an idea to flush out the water heater hoses to be sure everything is totally clean.

If you own a MD2020 each end should be the same. Some exchanger elements is covered with a sleeve and there should be stamped "UP" on one of the sides if the unit must be mounted in a certain way.

On my MD2020 there is no plastic container on the wall for the coolant, and I see on many pictures of MD2020 that they only have a cap on the top of the heat exchanger. Is the reservoir you have there up on the wall an optional upgrade or do you think it was added to that version? mine is a 2001 model and I assume yours is a couple of years newer.
@twiper
@twiper 2 жыл бұрын
The reservoir is a expansion tank to ensure the coolant system doesn't crack due to over pressure, it also prevent air in the system. On your system you have a radiator cap and a hose in the side where coolant will expand through and run out into eg. a bottle. When the engine gets' cold the hose will then suck up the coolant there has been filled into the bottle when it was hot. To prevent the overflow I think it is possible just not to fill the coolant system to the brim so the coolant can expand and retract without running out.

@@twiper yes there is a hose on the side of the cap. But I really like your setup where it's so easy to check the level of the coolant, so I might install such an expansion container on mine as well.

This is another great and instructive video - thank’s a lot. Please keep them coming! A question about the socket for the drain plug. I haven’t been able to find a shop that can provide such. Don't know where in the world you are from but the socket is known as a transmission oil plug socket. You can also get it at Biltema in the North countries. www.biltema.dk/varktoj/handvarktoj/trakvarktoj/toppe/top-38-til-10-mm-hesteskobrod-2000016836
