I'm white and I remember doing the same thing but with far bigger sections (often times the entire ponytail, but sometimes smaller ones in the front pinned to the back of the head or used as an element in an updo). We called them rope braids. It is interesting that this is essentially the same base, but smaller and on a different hair type.
