History student here. The 1914 Christmas truce is a very significant moment in history. It shows that the soldiers almost regarded their roles as a job. After all the countries at war were neighbors. Many had family and friends in other countries but served their duties and provided for their families. The truce was like thanksgiving but in my opinion means more as the “playing field was more even”. I remember a story of a soldier on one side giving a soldier on the other side a hair cut and beard trim. Many soldiers had professions they had to put on hold. I know it may seem like propaganda but whose propaganda is it? Senior officials on both sides disapproved of the soldiers actions. It didn’t necessarily make either side look better but gave them a day off. It’s a great moment of civility. That there was something more important than war. Peace.

It's just such a mind blowingly cool story. It also reminds me that we have the ability to change our situations IF we want to. The soldiers made a choice that day and pulled something off that no one thought would be possible. Pretty incredible.

German listener here. AND YES MA‘AM. Christmas is the most beautiful time here in Germany. Lived in America for a couple of years and loved your American traditions, like Elf on the Shelf or stockings over your fireplace, but let me tell y‘all there is nothing better than Christmas Markets, eating strawberries covered with chocolate and hot wine! Pre-COVID we had big Christmas markets [which are really famous) in Munich and Nurnberg and parts of Germany are covered in snow. You have a nice dinner on the 24th and everything is closed the 25th and 26th, so you can spend time with your loved ones. Those days are filled with love, laughter and usually the nicest food and drinks! I promise you, the German Christmas spirit is incomparable.

Actually the whole christmas truce during WWI shows that most of the soldiers who were fighting this war didn't even really want to fight eachother in the first place. Because the war was going on for so long a lot of them didn't even know why they were fighting anymore, a lot of them didn't know the reason why it even started in the first place. But orders were orders so they just kept fighting. The Christmas truce was just a pause in this endless suffering en the horrors of the trench war. (not a historian but these were some of the things i learned about in high school and during excursions to some of the WWI graveyards)

This. ^^^ Plus WW1 had many objectors. Some did this by refusing to go to war, but many more did not have this option and/or didn't realise until it was too late what horse splat the war was and how little the rich political types didn't have their back. They were kids mostly, so were desperate for some fun and heart on Xmas. Poor sods: this would have been the last pleasant day many of them had. I'm not a historian so not sure if, let alone how, this was reported back in the respective home countries at the time. However, I doubt it was propaganda as it humanises the enemy too much to work as that.

I can totally understand the situation why and how they can do this whole truce thing. Back then the were still people.... They didn't want to be there, they missed their life and for just one freakin' day they could pretend, that the "world" is normal again and they don't need to follow orders. They know they will die sooner or later. Can you imagine how desperate they could have been? Stories like this can still sometimes convince me, that mankind is not fully rotten from the roots.

I love the story of the WW1 Christmas Truce. At the end of the day, despite the horrors of war, the soldiers were just men and boys, a lot of them very young. The exchanging of gifts, singing songs, and playing football together shows that they were humans who were just following orders. They were still people and they were going through the same thing.

It's a moment to put aside all the horrible things you have to do to the other side and come together as human beings who had/have lives and loved ones before going to war. WWII really changed how the Western world thought about war and fought wars, so I think this WWI story resonates with people because it captures that sense that there was still some humanity to be had in the midst of warfare then, before "total war" and the modern world. I can understand how Bailey's Spidey-sense perked up for this one, it just feels like it fits the overarching narrative a little too well.

Fun fact about WWI: the Christmas truce wasn't the only halt in the hostilities. Especially toward the end of the war, there were areas that just...stopped -- especially places that were short on officers and long on men who'd been drafted. There are diary entries from English soldiers that mention going over and having dinner in the German trenches, and a lot of food-trading. They still had to use up their ammunition, so periodically they'd each lob something at the other trench -- but they warned the other side where it was going to happen, so nobody would get hurt. There was one case where the commanders in England were starting to suspect that was going on, so they demanded pieces of German barbed-wire as proof that there was actual fighting going on. The German solution? Send over a whole spool of it, so the English soldiers could just snip pieces off when needed.

The British had also never seen a christmas tree before, it was a German tradition, so when the first german soldier walked across the field to show a gesture of peace, with a small pine tree in hand and little candles and flaming wicks and paper all over it as decoration, smiling, they thought he was nuts.🤭 but it all worked out🕊

And the Higher officers had an absolute fit about it, the German troops that participated in it were punished by being shipped over to the Eastern Front, officers on both sides were punished for letting it happen.

In reference to the Christmas truce of WW1, it's key to remember that conscription was introduced in the UK due to the war meaning civilians had no choice but to fight unless they had an exemption (medical, widower etc). These men rolled out of bed one day and were made to put on a uniform and fight a war they had no control over. A truce to enjoy a moment of Christmas spirit with football, food and cigarettes seems like the only way they knew to feel a shred of sanity in war time.

I always thought it was heartbreaking, the idea of an 18 year old boy being sent off to fight in a War knowing he was likely to die. And how his Mum must have felt watching her child leave knowing that it was likely she'd never see him again. I always loved the story of the Christmas truce. I think it highlights humanity, even in a time of war

@@Nishanth_mementomori no I wasn't personally there but I studied history and have read soldiers diary entries of their first hand experiences. My grandfather was also one of the soldiers involved. None of their accounts are as idealistic as the story that gets told. Granted it's not all of the trenches accounts but even still. It was small moments of humanity during a monstrous war which was a miracle in itself but it wasn't like they were suddenly best friends like it was made out to be.

My grandpas troop liberated the concentration, Bergen-Belson. He said they were not told ahead of time what to expect at the camp, and my grandpa says the images of the prisoners still haunt him. He had a camera with him and took photos of the bunks, the mass graves, and some of the prisoners.

The Christmas football match is actually very famous and is taught as part of our history syllabus in UK schools. There are pictures of it happening. Bailey's reaction to this lovely/tragic moment of peace between dead men walking made me uncomfortable. What's sad is that many of the dark history tales you tell are common knowledge to those outside of the USA, it really is bafflingly sad that successive governments in the US have gone out of their way to breed ignorance in the population.

We actually do get taught this in the US, but since the school syllabus differs from state to state, some kids aren’t taught this. For example, I live in Virginia and we’re taught this in 7th grade, but that might not be the case for Georgia or Montana.

Well education in the U.S difffers by state. Each State is in charge of their own curriculum. Some states teach more than others about certain history. Nevada always has taught about the Christmas day truce of WWI, and much of what Bailey talks about on this channel as well.

The fact that the authorities condemned the action tells us that it was the decision of the men themselves and I don't really see how you can be cynical about people choosing on a day that means something special to them to lay down their arms. That tragic event revealed alot of mis conceptions and prejudices of the ignorance of alot of Americans to Islam. As a Brit, the christmas truce did actually happen though and it's kind of common knowledge in the Uk, I personally got taught about this in school. Short truces happened pretty regularly between the British and the Germans throughout the war so we could so stuff like collect our dead anyway. The truce wasn't as big of an event as people make it out to be though, most officers did really disapprove of this and people also exaggerate a lot of the details (e.g. yeah some people did play football but it wasn't a proper match. It was a few blokes having a bit of a kickabout.).

The WWI Christmas Truce is one of my favorite moments in history… ever. It shows that at core of it all, we are all human, and the politics of wars really mean nothing. Even though when it all just comes down to it, we are all just pawns and cannon fodder, there are human moments when people can just be people and kind to each other.

As much as I ADORE Bailey's takes on things, I'm kinda low key irked that she overlooked the deeper reprieve from war time that these soldiers tried to achieve. Regardless of the facts of what each side was fighting for, at the end of the day not every soldier is put there there by volition and dead meat was dead meat. The fact that they may have been stripped of all morale that a CAROL sparked that domino effect speaks for itself. So yeah not an eyeroll but more of a moment of silence for the momentary reminder that they saw each other as men and possibly mirrors of each other and the difference lay in the power commanding them.

Agreed. This wasn't propaganda at all since this was explicitly not sanctioned by the higher-ups. The Regular Joes down in the mud and filth in the trenches were tired and scared and overwhelmed fighting for leaders who would never appreciate their sacrifices. These men needed rest and to be seen as people and to see the other side as people too. I always love hearing this story because it's the tiniest candle of hope and goodness in a time of darkness and death.

The war thing. It's sad. The soldiers were most likely very young and thought, on both sides, that they were doing the right thing for their country, until they got there, learned the truth and saw the horror. And in that moment just wanted things to go back to normal, when things were simple, happy, and innocent. They were fighting strangers because they both thought it was right, because that's what they were told. So for a time they went back, until the powers that be ripped their childlike enthusiasm, hope, and human goodwill for mankind out from under them.

As a historian myself, I don’t get why Bailey’s so annoyed abt the Christmas Truce? Those men were there against their will. They’re away from their loved ones, scared, sick and tired. They don’t want to go out and fight for months against ppl they don’t know, hungry, without communicating with their homes, fearing something might have happened to their families and enduring trauma on their own. Let them have one last human celebration moment, that’s a form for them to have a link with reality, with normality, to pull them away from the dark place they might’ve been inside their minds. I get and encourage the suspect look over the governments in power at the time, but how countries that couldn’t agree with a truce in first place would suddenly accept and make a deal with one another to use the Christmas time and the soldiers situation as propaganda to benefit both of them? And how would they make so many soldiers act like it was natural and no one come out after saying it was all staged? As human beings, we rely on rituals and traditions, it’s in our nature. To say that soldiers wouldn’t do something like that during war, is to underestimate the role of Christmas on western populations as a cultural costume.

I think perhaps it is easy to forget, when we call these soldiers "men", that they were really children. 18 year olds, forced into a war that there was no real reason to be in, fighting in horrific conditions, mustard gas, and watching their friends die around them. I can't imagine the lingering trauma that caused.

When the war started, a wave of teenagers as young as 14/15 enlisted due to the false sense of honor and adventure propagated by the government or due to the fear of hunger and unemployment. My heart aches so much thinking about this :(

The same thing happened with me something kept banging and ringing my door bell but nothing was there. After I answered the door and looked outside my house after the 3rd time it stopped and then paranormal things started happening in my house.
