One Year Later and this is still damned impressive. The three main actors have great voices and harmonized well. As the Director, I assumed you had a hand in the choreography and script editing. Great job on both of those. The only complaint I have falls into the "this is a college production" category and that is the horrible sound. You would think a University would be able to afford half-way decent sound equipment for their Theatre Department. I mean, at least mic them up, sheesh! :p
@thafeeneedstohush6 жыл бұрын
ForeverDegenerate if we could’ve we would’ve that’s for sure! the main difficulty with doing mics was that it was back to back 20 minute cuts from different musicals. it just would’ve been a crazy hassle trying to do that for 10 different groups. And thank you so much! We worked hard with the amount of time given and I have to say my actors loved the script so much that it was easy for them to just play and have fun which I think really shows.

Okay but I lowkey kinda dig Jafar in a suit lol. And just the vibe of the whole thing. Like there's all these people comparing it to the original but I feel like it wouldn't be any fun to make or watch if it was just trying to be an exact copy of Starkid

Six years late, but youtube recommendations are a funny thing. I have to comment just compliment Aladdin. I adore Jeff Blim, but absolutely love how he really made it his own thing. And his comedic timing was incredible! Also, every one of the main characters had lovely voices and I really enjoyed the modern costumes. It was your own take on a Starkid classic and that's awesome!

For what it is it's good. I just don't like the low energy in performance and the pace of the whole thing is too slow, with a faster pace you would've had the energy automatically. LOOOOOVED the take on the street style Aladdin. He was really funny and had balls to make it his own role after Jeff. I know I'm like four years late, but I'm so glad somebody went for a starkid musical. It's my dream to direct a starkid musical, especially Twisted and now The guy who didn't like musicals. How did you get the permission? Where did you contact Nick?

Sophiemaetheatre it actually was! by some grace of some god, Nick Lang actually approved my usage of the script for no profit! I was totally not expecting a response, but was very graciously allowed the chance to stage a tiny bit of the show for my directing class. I had also already purchased the vocal selections that AJ and Kaley had made available at the time.

Did you have to get licensing for this 20min performance from starkid?
@thafeeneedstohush4 жыл бұрын
Abi Divino Technically no. Since this was for a class and there was no revenue gained from this. I don’t think they have it licensed yet anyway, if they can. But I had already bought the vocal selections from the show that AJ Holmes released a while after the show was posted. I was considering doing it for my final in class but I wanted to try to contact Starkid and see if I could get some sort of a script. It took awhile but I finally heard back from their agent and Nick Lang was kind enough to pass along a draft of the script for my use! So I got permission to do a portion of the show but not necessarily rights if that makes sense ☺️

@@thafeeneedstohush i think i read in some of the comments here(not sure if in this particular video) that twisted is available for licensing but doesn't have a student version of it. What with the amount of swearing even on the opening i can see why haha

I like the voices but is Jafar wearing a suit? In general the costumes...
@thafeeneedstohush6 жыл бұрын
Malfoy you Little shit haha the costumes are more suggestive of the characters more so than the original production. I had a budget of like $50 (if that) so I had my actors pull from their own wardrobe.
@ForeverDegenerate6 жыл бұрын
+Malfoy you Little shit Are you seriously complaining about the costumes? Did you not see A Very Potter Musical? Dylan Saunders, as Dumbledore, literally walked out wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and Birkenstocks. Voldemort was literally Joe Walker shirtless wearing black pants and tap dancing shoes. (facepalm)

ForeverDegenerate #thatcollegebudgetman
@XoIoRouge5 жыл бұрын
@@thafeeneedstohush I'm not going to claim that 50$ is enough for good costumes, but as a costume person at my highschool and college, a passable Jafa and Princess costume would be the most expensive at 15$ both, while Aladdin's costume would be 10$ and everyone else's would be 5$ at most. All of this is expecting the actors pitch in cloths from their own wardrobe. HOWEVER, my estimates are simply price. The amount of time it would take to turn goodwill and dollarstore items into actual costumes would be EXTENSIVE. So this isn't a complaint, but simply something for ForeverDegenerate and others to stop underestimating low budgets. Actually, nvm, underestimate the low budgets. Otherwise people would expect more from me when they hand me 50$ NOTE: Also, did you have 50$ for just costumes, or for the whole thing? I realize that maybe you mean a 50$ budget for everything, and in that case, you're fine. :P
@thafeeneedstohush5 жыл бұрын
Andy Malik oh yeah it was about $50 max for everything. I don’t remember how much I actually spent on everything, but remember, this was just a 20 minute cut down version of a show that barely anyone knew for a grade. We were all a part of multiple scenes and some of us were graduating not long after this. We were also all broke college students and everything was out of our own pockets; I made the Golden Scarab out of styrofoam, I bought accessories from thrift stores, etc. I also kind of thought the costumes were Disneybound-esque. Once the characters are established, the costumes could be more suggestive rather than exact replicas of the original production/movie.

While the vocals are good, the stage presence isn’t the best. Lots of shifting weight when they should be standing still. If you are doing a piece, don’t directly steal from the source. The entire beginning was the exact same choreography as star kid. Be creative. Take risks. Be new.
