Thanks for this instructional video. I just bought 4 of these Disston saws at a yard sale 2 weeks ago and I'm going to clean them up for use. The person who sold them found them in an old barn and sold them to me for $5 a saw.

Good job making it work again. I liked how you didn't spend too much time trying to make it pristine. I would be interesting in seeing more on sharpening a cross cut blade.

Beautiful saw and great restoration. I am a collector of Disston saws and have restored about 21. I think the medallion is about 1880 as you said. I have a D8 Disston with that same medallion. It is a 26" crosscut with 12ppi !!!! I have sharpened it twice and it takes a long time and care. I have a book of Disston catalogues and they didn't make a standard 26" 12ppi. I emailed Erik at the "Disstonian institute" and he told me that it would have been a special order from Disston. Maybe ordered by someone who wanted a fine crosscut for hardwood wardrobe panels etc; Anyway you did a great job and it's a beautiful saw. I have 3 Disston thumb hole rip saws and they cut like a dream and have the first 1 1/2" of smaller teeth at the toe to start the cut. Dave Sheppard.

Thanks! Sounds like you found a good one then! Great idea about the teeth closer together at the toe. I still struggle with sharpening but get a little better each time. Even being left handed the unmodified thumbhole saw is the most comfortable and easy to use for me.

A beautiful restoration Dave, over here in Australia these saws are very sought after by both woodworking connoisseurs & folks that paint beautiful Aussie bush settings upon them, normally they make $100 per painted saw 🤠🤠🎥🔨👍

Thanks Sumo. I've seen a few painted ones her in the states. It seems you can still get them pretty cheap here still

Good video about a nice saw. However, I have a small objection! When filing with the tooth tips facing right, start filing at the start of the saw blade - do not start filing at the saw grip - start from RIGHT TO LEFT, ending filing the saw blade by the handle! Otherwise you reverse the fine grating that occurs when filing the tooth backwards instead of forward in the sawing direction and it is not optimal.

If you put Johnson paste wax on the saw it will help keep your saw from rerusting it works wonders on all tools that rust and it won't hurt your projects

What an absolute beauty that saw is. I'm very envious. When I sharpen up an old saw, before using the triangular file I like to use a flat , handle-less bastard cut file to even out the height of the tooth points. Have you ever tried that? Great video mate.
@TwistedWorkshop775 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I do use a flat file to joint the teeth if they are in bad shape. I have an old jig that the file sits in that keeps it flat. These teeth were in pretty good shape with just a couple being low. I think I'm going to make another video just on sharpening a saw and go through the entire thorough process. Thanks for watching!

Good job and beauty of a saw. Curious if there was an etching present or did it disappear. Getting ready to do abunch of saw restores closer to early 1900s. Thanks for sharing.
@TwistedWorkshop775 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I can barely make out an etch in a couple places but not enough to try and save it. I've seen where people use a bluing agent to bring it back in some cases but I think mine was too far gone

Nice looking saw. I have one that looks very close to this one. Looks like the teeth could just a quick jointing with a flat file before sharpening.
@TwistedWorkshop775 жыл бұрын
Thanks. There are one or 2 low teeth but the saw cuts really well. if I make a full up saw sharpening video, I will show jointing and setting

Perfect level of resto. Preserve the history and the future. Good job! Check out double-boiled linseed oil, there’s at least one brand that I know of made the old fashioned way with no chemicals, you can use bare hands and work it in nice...

What should i look for when buying old saws??
@TwistedWorkshop775 жыл бұрын
I look to make sure the handle is in one piece and the horns are in good shape. I make sure that my hand fits well in the handle. Make sure the saw plate is straight, no bow or kink. Not so much rust near the teeth that the pitting will make them weak. I also usually make sure there is a lot of saw plate left. If it's really old I may buy it just to have spare parts but there are so many good ones out there, you can usually be picky

I was looking up this topic because a friend just have me a really old saw tonight... It's identical to yours, although I had to rub the medallion a bit to read "Disston" haha. I think mine is a cross-cut blade, but it's hard to tell.

Just restored a D-8. Turns out mine is from 1896-1917. There is a lot of info at the Disstonian Museum site. You can tell the age by the medallion design. www.disstonianinstitute.com/medv2.html
