Today we take a look back at AFL 23 ahead of the 2024 season and try to work out what's next for the game, as well as trying to discover what simply doesn't work about the game in it's current state.

Big ant should honestly have legal action against them. They sold us an unfinished product and one that didn't include one of the main features of the game (pro team), and they haven't even added it now when it is nearly a year since it's release.

Ngl, bad games release all the time, even from good devs. The game is playable just not overly fun, which sucks. It has it’s moments, but it’s definitely v annoying not having one of its biggest new features release within a reasonable timeframe after launch.

@@Twistie3 eh, I think it's definitely coming up to the point where a legitimate class action law suit could be filed by those who purchased the game. Including things like ProTeam not even being added nearly an entire year after being shown in a release trailer. I don't know man, personally I cannot trust Big Ant anymore. They ruined it and their reputation and I hope they get stripped of their licensing.

23 has the worst controls ever in a video game. Big Ant CEO Ross passive aggressively used the excuse that the off season is the reason they left the game beyond broken. I hope they do get sued into bankruptcy for scamming everyone and then rubbing salt into the wounds.

The player progression is completely scuffed too. Players losing 30 rating points in a season, other players don’t grow at all despite force feeding them disposals and goals.

I would much rather they implement a damn career mode like every other sporting title does instead of the cash grab pro team. Loot boxes have no place in games.

I will say we haven’t seen how it will work yet, but assuming loot boxes will mean it’s not ideal. If it means the game gets funded more to have those other modes, it’s probably worth whole for all tbh

Hey Twistie, great video. Just wanted to mention a few things I learned playing that you mentioned. Kicking at goal on the run - 9:25 - you want to typically aim a little before the first bar. Those bars represent the goalposts, and your kick has the same left/right swing as it does with a set shot. Also maybe release it earlier if you are accounting for wind (i.e more swing - like a set shot). CPU Team tactics - yep, always man-on-man… but for now, in Play Now mode, you can switch the controller to the opposition, change the tactics, then switch the controller back and play the game. Playing against a zone this way feels completely different. Hopefully they fix that in the updates, where each team will have their own tactics, and maybe dynamically change them during a match. Beating even the hardest AI involves quick disposals (as soon as you take possession) in congestion, timing the contested marks well and learning the set shot positioning and timing (the power can always be full, there's no downsides). Taking advantage of the stab kick is also very helpful. If you get good at those things you will win 95% of games.

I play on medium and set shot goals are almost impossible, the ump will pay a 50 against me sometimes when I’m trying to leave the protected area, apart from that I think updated rosters and gameplay sliders would make the game so much better I am finding it fun.

Something id like to see is, when they have a set shot right in front and in the goal square, they act as is its a hards and longer kiick doing their full run ups, what if they did a quick one or two step kick liike what we really see?

The game looked good in the trailer, with pro mode and no career that was gonna be similar to the cricket 22 and 24 career modes they really screwed up 😢

I dont remember the last time i played the game and looking at this reminds me why. You made some good points around the gameplay. From what i saw and remember from the last time playing it. Ultimately, you have no real control of the game. Personally, in the earlier iterations i found there were less 1v1s around the ground and hitting up spot kicks felt nice. Unfortunately, i dont foresee much if any improvements. I dont understand why the game can only improved apon in footy season? The game came out massively broken, big ant attempted to continually fix it until the end of the season and was like "oh well, now you will have to wait until the start of the next season". People paid for the game, big ant should had continually worked on it until it was to an acceptable standard with all the features advertised(if they think this was the case thats even more concerning). Ross's response to criticism was terrible and has left me with little confidence in Big Ant .

"is pro team gonna be free" it bloody better be. For them to release the game in such a bad state and then turn around and charge money foe a mode that was advertised to be in the game a year ago would be absolutely insulting.

If they put a price tag to it we riot. They have a chance right now to make this game good. Get the game more free flowing, speed up the animations, constant updates and Pro Team release. If the gameplay turns out to be great. Everything works on a pro team side is genuinely fine. People will spend money on the micro transactions, theyll create more funding for the next AFL game and continuously get bigger. If not, they lose their license and we hope that someone bigger that is willing to make a too notch game gets the job.

Based on the video dude. It is still an unfinished game. After months of released, you're still wanting fixes. Partner with another studio man. Having a buggy game is one thing, but having it unplayable on day 1 and no on going changes is another.

If you want to get into afl watch the games no ads during play sadly the video game is not good enough and dosent do enough of showing footy to people from no footy backgrounds afl need to realise that if the afl wants to became international which it’s trying to become they need a great game I got into nba because of 2k

I honestly waiting for a video like this few days ago I was looking everywhere for one that was recent and the game was in my ps5 cart but ended up buying something els thanks for video anyways. after watching this video I'm happy I didn't get it also they should just give up on this game and take a year to release afl25 next March on both consoles and use same engine just polish the he'll out of it people would appreciate that more then trying to revive this broken mess. the only thing that will be polished in the future of this game will be the loot boxes from pro clubs if they release it mark my words

Idk if it's just me but the Xbox One version has 0 tackling from Hard and above difficulty, Marking is almost non existant, spoiling is non existant and there is no coloured power bar while kicking or handballing on the run

Given how slow and tbh, seemingly forgetful Big Ant have been in adding things to a game that was an absolute car crash on release... not to mention the delays in even releasing it, and how long it took to release Xbox, does anyone actually have any faith in that even if they do release Pro Team, that Big Ant can even keep up with & produce content for the mode anyway? We're talking almost round the clock attention, content & updates...

This game has shattered my confidence in the company; it's been a letdown. The disappointment was so profound that I decided against purchasing Cricket 24 due to concerns about the company's priorities. It seems the company is overly fixated on securing player licenses rather than prioritizing the overall quality of the game.

Even the bench still has nobody on it 😂, no proper training mode or tutorials mode, no mini games, no player career mode, no pro team, gameplay is average at best. No scenario mode.

AFL Live (2011) still the best AFL game. Kinda sad how they had such a great platform to work from/with as AFL lives gameplay still stacks up today. And yet they completely butchered this game, the animations need to be sped up as they kinda stop/freeze frame and then the animation plays, so clunky, across the board.

God, I just watched the video and my god... The AI and tactics are all screwed up along with the gameplay being unresponsive as hell... There is no way you can fix all that up with patches along with fixing up the broken modes and adding even more modes. They gotta go completely back to the drawing board and try again. This'll take years to fix and get up to level it needs to... They really didn't give this game enough development time and it shows... Absolutely Disappointing...

I think the biggest issues are; that on PC its $100, we don't have pro team and it looks like it wont, we have all of this money thrown into the AFL yet we get absolute abysmal games (graphically and feature wise), the game has never been on sale (at least on Steam), the game is barely updated and the game still looks like something that would be played on a PS3/Xbox 360. Why do Australian based sport games get zero love, where American games like NBA2k and others get ACTUAL animations from motion capture and face scans, These kind of games would thrive as advertisement for the real life game if they were actually good
