Part of what caused this was the faulty idea that "John Swan wouldn't do this". This idea was used as a counter-argument, and often times it can be right. However, in this case, and is quite a few of the other cases in the commentary community, it turned out to be wrong. It is this faulty idea that needs to be fazed out, just as choosing sides with emotion should be.

While this mess was still ongoing, I had been afraid to comment my stance on this, especially when I read all the comments saying that dream was a horrible person, and that his stans were too. Emotion was probably the fuel for many of these comments, and I understand there frustrations, but I also understand that this kind of behavior is toxic, and should be fazed out. We shouldn't go upon emotion alone when making decisions, which is why I almost never post anything negative or accusatory about the opposing side, and I always wait for all of the evidence to be on the table before I make my decision on something. Its an important skill to have, and I can only hope that the idea spreads to others.

The scariest part about this for me is the fact that, this wasn't that big of a problem. Had he apologized, he would've probably been forgiven. This wasn't that big of a problem. I thought that the apology worked well enough. Dream seems to want a lot to do with the commentary community. I mean, Jadyn and Connor Pugs make videos on Dream getting slammed by Twitter almost every third day now. Dream’s a content machine and Clay, the guy behind the Dream persona, knows this. He knows that his fame will lead to videos constantly being made about him and he also knows that this means that he needs a good rapport with the commentary community so that he can make sure that there’s very few negative videos about him. The only ones who seem to make commentary with integrity nowadays are Kavos, DarkviperAU (when he rambles or talks about other content creators, that is) and Bowblax. Besides these guys and a few others, the rest will fall in line just like Keemstar.

Dream had a lot of awful points in his stream. Because he was keeping the hard evidence close to his chest. Dream knew John Swan was lying, so the terrible points like an Australian saying "mate" and a person in general saying "yup" makes sense. By not sharing the real evidence, he allowed John Swan to keep lying. Hard. And people saying "this happened a while ago" and all that...no. He was lying about it recently. So the damage is recent.

Anyone who says that this was 'a small issue' doesn't get the bigger picture. It wasn't JUST about what John Swan did. It was also about how acted AFTER he did it. He lied to cover it up, then he used Dreams previous drama as a way to turn the tide into his favor, all the while lying straight to his friends faces, along with the community as a whole. There's a reason that lying is often seen as worse than whatever it was used to cover up for, and why it is often punished for worse. When a child breaks a vase, then lies to escape punishment, what message does that leave them with? "Well, if I lie, I can do anything I want!" This idea can lead to consequences, as it can cause them to make a lie they can't get out of, which is what happened to John Swan. But it can also cause even worse things to happen. Adults who lie often have to deal with much more responsibilities, and lying as an adult can cause more damage because of that. What if people began harassing Dream because they thought he was 'attacking a smaller channel'? Or maybe they decide to try and dox him? Or, even worse, they swat him? To people who say that this way of thinking is 'outrageous', I respond with, 'its happened before, and it's still happening.' Lies gave consequences, no matter how small. Please remember that.

Big rant incoming! My biggest issue with this drama was how everyone immediately blamed dream. While yes, his reputation did get damaged by the whole speedrun scandal, just outright believing that he's in the wrong in any drama involving him leaves an open door for literally anyone to spew up lies about dream and cause even more damage to not only him(potentially mentally) but also his career. Manipulative and honestly terrible people will see that dream will get automatically blamed and use that for their advantage. As disappointed in dream as I am about that situation, he still doesn't deserve to automatically be put in the wrong, accused and slandered over any drama he's in. We didn’t believe Dream was ‘guilty,’ we thought he was acting impulsively and irrationally. To an extent a lot of people still believe that, but he’s definitely not the villain in this story
