People give Gordon a rough time for being too combative in the kitchen, but you can see how kind and comforting he can be when he needs to - comforting Jeff when he broke down in tears. It shows that to be an excellent chef (a role that requires meticulous attention to detail, robust teamwork expertise and excellent people skills) Gordan can sense when he needs to be kind (but firm) rather than authoritarian in his approach. As entertaining as these shows are, I genuinely believe Gordon wants what's best for these people and the culinary industry and I really admire him for that.

most restaurants do this so staff don't bring food from the outside to avoid cross-contamination in the kitchen. The kitchen can be cleaned hourly, if someone carries in a nasty piece of spoiled chicken for their lunch and stores it in the fridges, they have to throw out ALL THE FOOD kept nearby! It's a hygiene issue as much as it is a labour issue.

A POEM ABOUT KITCHEN NIGHTMARES: Gordon went to the usa to help restaurants who've lost their way. The food is frozen fresh from the can. This makes Gordon an angry man. The owner has an ego trip. The chef is lying having a kip. The owner doesn't seem to care. So here's a Scottish chef who likes to swear. The customers don't want to eat the food. It really does sour the mood. Now they'll cry and call Gordon a saint. Because the production team gave the walls a new coat of paint.

The production team approaches failing restaurants that are so bad that they know it will make great TV. The ones presented in the show are horrible, but that doesn't mean it's an American norm. Furthermore, Ramsay has a "field trip" in the US because the show makes a ton of cash.

I sincerely appreciate Gordon’s ability to act. Most people are unaware he’s actually an extremely kind, polite, and genuine person. He’s merely playing an exaggerated caricature of a ‘celebrity chef’. With that knowledge, it makes the show even that more entertaining. If he didn’t become so popular, at such a young age, via his cooking & success as a restauranteur, I’m positive he could’ve been equally successful in the acting world 💫

When customers are told how old their food is, and the owners are like 'this is humiliating!' I think: Would they be humiliated if the food was freshly made and the customers were told it was fresh? Doubt it. If you don't want to be humiliated, don't do it! 🤣
@wvrjl
@wvrjl Жыл бұрын
I have seen him make bigger deals than it should be. For example, a lasagna that's one week old, but has been in the freezer. Obviously, fresher is better, but it isn't old if it's been in the freezer for one week. Or when I saw him, RIDICULOUSLY, shut down the restaurant for the night, sending customers that were in the restaurant home, because he saw one plate of clearly overcooked vegetables! He would have never done that in the UK version in a million years.
@EmiliFaust
@EmiliFaust Жыл бұрын
@wvrjl If I want to eat week old frozen food, I would prefer to pay a fraction of the price for a supermarket frozen lasagna and stay at home. Edit to add: I am from the UK, and I totally agree that the US version is definitely more dramatic and exaggerated than the UK one, but I don't think that changes the issue I was addressing in my original comment.
@wvrjl
@wvrjl Жыл бұрын
@@EmiliFaust - I don't disagree with you, but it doesn't change my point, that the US version of Kitchen Nightmares, clearly cares more about ratings than helping the restaurant. In the UK version, he would have never went out into the dining room and announced to everybody that what they're eating is frozen. He wouldn't have done it. He would have said, "It's a good thing the customers aren't here to see this." Which he literally has said in the UK version. In the UK version he cared more about the restaurant succeeding. Going into the dining room and sending people who are there to eat and pay money, home, when it isn't something extremely important, such as a kitchen that is not safe to cook in because it is too nasty, can negatively effect that restaurant for some time to come. It's not something you should do, unless there is a serious danger. A perfect example would be that Indian place, Dillon's. That was a danger to customers.
@EmiliFaust
@EmiliFaust Жыл бұрын
@wvrjl Perhaps there was pressure from the production company to change his approach because we've seen from the UK version that he does seem to care about helping these people and was more reasonable with his approach, though as a customer I do admittedly like how forthcoming he is with them in the US version. 😅 I want to know where my food comes from. I do prefer the UK version as well, UK television in general, even the fictional stuff is just more raw and real than US television. Something kind of funny is that I recognise the stock sound they sometimes use for when a server puts a plate down in front of Gordon from a video game I played in the 90s (I think the game is Icewind Dale lol) and I don't understand why the US production company thinks that's necessary because it's so absurd and distracting 😂 Why do we need to hear the plate being put down? It happens a lot. In an interview, I believe he explained that he had to stop because he was almost constantly battling food poisoning from the food he ate at some of the places he visited, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was just fed up of the disgusting incompetence he kept encountering especially towards the end. Some of these people also tried to blame and sue him for their business that was allegedly already failing (which is the reason they apply to be in Kitchen Nightmares, right?), so that might have also affected his approach as well. I think he also changed slightly as a person, maybe he was just more of a dramatic person towards the end (maybe the production company influenced that change?), but there was a positive change I noticed in him as well. He was always a bit prejudiced towards vegetarians, I grew up vegetarian, so I thought it wasn't cool of him to be like that to us. I think it was the UK version; he pulled in someone from the street to try the pizza at the restaurant he was helping, the person informed Gordon that they were vegetarian, Gordon assured them there was a vegetarian pizza, the person agrees to try it, and Gordon was just like 'lol whoops' when he found out it contained meat-some people are vegetarian for health reasons and eating meat can make them seriously unwell, so it wasn't just a 'lol whoops' and did cause a stir in the news at the time. In the US version, he does seem to take pescatarians and vegetarian diets much more seriously. Maybe it was that incident that changed his perspective or something. I think it was the Chappy episode? The restaurant owner (and head chef) didn't even know pescetarians were a thing, so Gordon brought one (one of his customers) to meet him and seemed annoyed by the ignorance, I think he even pointed out that it could make pescatarians sick. You can see it as him being a bit of a hypocrite since he never seemed to take these dietary restrictions seriously before or that he learned from his mistakes, considering the way he is nowadays, I like to think he changed his opinion of pescatarians, vegetarians, and vegans for the better. He seems much more open-minded. Thank you for replying and reading what I've written as well. It's interesting talking with you about this.

So my question is : who gives them the special talk off camera to turn them around ?

It sounds crazy, but I really empathise with Michael. Having that much responsibility dumped on you, then being verbally beaten when you make a mistake or ask for help, it really is overwhelming and soul crushing. I guarantee that's why he gave up and why he had such a volatile temper. The sad reality is that whether things turn around or not, that'll stick with him for life, constantly pushing himself to breaking point in the hopes of finally being good enough while constantly doubting himself and wanting to give up.
@Hello_Spaceboy

Its also lack of respect that gives him that temper he snapped because hes an owner too yet they were treating him like the help. His brother has a more assertive personality and he tends to over power his decisions. Then his mom just blames michael without really knowing whats going on.

No he was an asshole. He is literally the only reason that the progress was so slow. Burnt out is one thing but not talking to your boss is a new level of disrespect. He can be glad that he was not kicked out. I would’ve. Open your f*ing mouth and talk! A grown ass man can’t even say to his boss what his problem is while everyone puts in the work to change? He is responsible for the other cooks, he is not alone. If he can’t do his job he should leave or step back. If I would behave like that at work, I would be on food stamps He can’t handle critism and doesn’t question himself. He relied on the family drama that he won’t lose his job because of Alex. He is not an owner of that restaurant, he is an employee. If he would own it he would care and put in the work and start communicating.

Man, the Capri episode was epic! At first it looked like Tweedledee and Tweedledum have materialized but then Gordon torn away the blanket they hid under. Jeff and Jim do have problems that reach back deep. The problem with tough love: it´s a faint line between cracking open the cocoon and breaking the suspect. One week of guidance might not be enough to overcome 40 years of doing twin jokes. They seem like good boys- I hope they make it and get their self esteem established. Thanks to Mr. Ramsey, I always thought he was just a cocky basterd who likes to boot camp people.
