There's only a specific area in Manila that is eating this kind of scrap food. which is the area of tondo. Not all of us Filipino's are eating this kind of food. We can still buy and eat proper food here.

Yes that's true, because in province, as long as you are hardworking, almost everything is free ,like water, you built a house no need to rent, you can plant veggies and no need to buy in the market, 😞 unlike in Manila, every air you breathe ,you will mostly likely have to pay for it,😂 . You cannot go to supermarket by just walking, you need to pay taxi or jeepney fare, which is in province , hiking and walking to the supermarket can be a good exercise and less fare @@DANDJREACT

That is not entirely true. Only land owners and their relatives/friends can have a sustained life in the provinces. There is no industry, there are no jobs. The land can only sustain so many as regrowing crops take time. Fishing require skill and ownership of a vessel. Plenty of people have left the province not because of false ambition, but simply because there is nothing for them there. This is why squatters relocation rarely work. The government build them houses in areas where they would have no way to sustain themselves. They end up moving back to Manila where they at least have a fighting chance, as terrible as the conditions are. What we really need is for government to decentralize industries, allow manufacturing to setup shop on provincial areas where they can hire the local population. Instead of trying to keep them in the high tax areas, so they can pocket more.

This only happens in Metro Manila or maybe some other cities as some people thought that they will get better opportunities and better life in the city, but unfortunately some didn't get any good jobs and ended up in the slums. For me, I chose to leave the city life as it's better to live in the province where you can plant veggies and eat fresh foods. Some families, who don't have the means, are those who have many kids. Family planning is not practiced that much in the slums that's why some kids ended being beggars in the street, not being able to go to school, Sometimes it's based on your choices in life. This is not only happening in the Philippines, I believe in some other countries there are worse situations. Sad reality. 😢

I worked in a fast food before and it is part of the rules that all the leftover should be thrown in the trash. And one of the reason why is of course for health safety. And in my opinion, this is also one of the owner's strategy so employees won't take advantage of it. Imagine if the owner will let the employees take home the leftover food that is still in a good condition, they might purposely put a large amount of food in the cx's plate so the cx won't be able to finish it. And/or some employees especially the kitchen staff might steal food if that happens. These people needs education. Especially those children. And in order for their parents to sustain the education of their kids is of course they need jobs. I love this saying that “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Sad truth but there's a lot of politicians here that is only alive during election but once they got elected, they forget about these people. During the election time, some of the politicians are visiting these area and bring some goody bags in exchange of asking for their votes. 🙃 Sometimes, its funny to think that maybe policians here need some educations too. Lmao.

this documentary is aboit the life in Manila, the capitalnof the Philippines. it's the city and island life is in the provinces that you reach via bus, airplane, ship or private vehicles. although Manila gets seafoods from other parts of the country, it's not as easy to transport products feom one island to another. we have a fish port in one of the cities in Metro Manila called NAVOTAS but they are sent to all the different markets in different cities within the metro but an average Filipino would probably be able to afford only fish, depending on the variety, and shellfish. an average family cannot really afford to buy other seafood items such as shrimps/prawns or crabs. lobster or big crabs such as king crabs or alaskan crab is mainly for rich ppl only.

True, they thought the life in Manila is easy. I have a friend, her entire family move from south of the Philippines (Mindanao) to north (Luzon), most especially to populated area of metropolitan. They sold everything in the south to live Manila hoping they would have a good life in Manila. All their savings went down the drain since it is not cheap to live in the city. They also have a big family. It was hard to find a stable job and high paying. A couple of my friend's siblings ended up stealing food from the neighbors because they have any money to buy food. 😢

This one is also a part of our reality, much like white sandy beaches, awesome people, and world-class talents. We are so resilient and keep going in tough times, not giving up even if it means eating thrown-away food. This gives the phrase "One man's trash is another man's treasure" an entirely new perspective that is sort of literal. Our country may have heavenly features, but poverty also remains a part of the landscape, and extreme corruption very much exist. P. S You guys are really awesome! When you start your journey here, though, reach out to NGOs directly for assistance. Unfortunately, most of our local officials are questionable (corrcupt). Therefore, directly provide help to the people rather than going through our government agencies.

Some of these people might have a better life in their provinces but they chose to leave to find a better life in manila as what they believe. It happened to my neighbor suffering for 10 years in the slums after getting married there and having children. When her mother died she went home to attend the burial and realized they had a wide backyard and a rice field. She brought home her family and started planting vegetables and working on the rice field. Her husband quit his job and joined them, now they live a healthy life and earned by selling what they produced from the field.

these scenarios are true in the metropolis and in big cities where some families live in extreme poverty.. the reason is that, they don't have permanent jobs or fixed income... the irony is, families that live in poverty seemed to have big families whereas rich families and average income families usually have 1 to 4 children... like in our community, outside Manila where parents have permanent jobs, the average number of children is 2-3 per family... in the province, the prime commodities are cheaper than in the metropolis thereby we don't eat pagpag

I'm from the province also and I agree with this comment, the spirit of bayanihan (communal unity and cooperation) is still very much alive. We plant vegetables, rootcrops in vacant lots or even fruit-bearing trees. As long as you have an open space and the owner of the land allows it, people will plant vegetables. It's heartbreaking to see this because nobody deserves that kind of life. If it's planted in a communal land, then it's free for the taking, but of course you have to leave some for others. Life in the province is really very simple and laidback.

Everything in the city (Manila) is expensive, seafood included. I think those living in the provinces near the sea can benefit in eating fresh seafood. What I know is that the fishermen sell them at lower prices because the cost of living in the provinces is relatively lower than in the cities. So, once the products reach Manila, they're already expensive because of transportation and all. I think you get the gist. There was even a time, I think it was last year, that a kilo of onion cost about $15 (Php800) which was ridiculously expensive. It was gold. So there, even if we would like to eat seafood everyday, the price is almost the same as chicken, pork, or beef, ingredients not yet included. 😅

It’s heartbreaking. And the corruption… it’s so systemic it’s beyond disheartening. Reading up on corruption for one of the social science courses I took, I also learned how it has become cultural due to the (very smart) methods the Spanish used to control Filipinos (called Indios by them a long time ago). It’s a fascination topic… if only it weren’t so angering and heartbreaking.

We don't have food banks in the Philippines but there are organizations in the country to provide financial assistance and food. But they can't provide everyday to every family because the country is the one that will be in trouble and people will only rely on the country's provision if they give their food everyday and they won't work. In province you can grow your own veggies and sell it. It is even better that they return to their provinces and their municipality can provide them with an alternative livelihood and they also provide work and tesda school for free and they will help you to find a good job. As for water, there is a supply but ofcourse its not for free, each bucket has a fee. (for those who doesn't have a water line). Pagpag is only being utilized by a very small portion of the population in a certain slum area in the big city of Manila. Not all Filipinos even have awareness about this situations in the slums until social media and KZbin came. And not all poor Filipinos resort to Pagpag as a way of life in the city. They have each of their own ways to survive being poor. It usually depends on their locations. You are right, this should be addressed properly by the Government. And proper assistance should be implemented for the poor. Hopefully in the near future. We only can try our best to assist somehow. Provinces, towns or cities near the seas or oceans can have abundant sources of fishes and other seafoods compared to places inland or locations so far away from any open sea or water source. Hence not all Filipinos can have free access to seafoods. Like not all Filipinos have seen or experienced swimming in the sea or have been to any beaches or islands per se. I have known older people as old as 60 or 80 having not seen any open sea or ocean their whole lives. Especially those living in the mountains inland and do not have opportunities to travel out because to travel just to go to the beach will take hours and hours. The Philippines still has a big portion of inland and there are big mountains over it. There is still a big gap to navigate before anyone from the inlands can see the shore. Watching from Thailand.. Just subscribed today. ❤

This is true, the harsh reality in some part of metro Manila area, sadly this is overlooked or neglected by many local government officials in the city. Poverty is a big problem in a developing country, and Philippines particularly Manila have a fair share of it. many years ago Manila is one of the country’s progressive city, locals from other provinces across the country sold their lands, livestock and everything and move to Manila hoping for a better way life but ended up loosing everything and due to the flock of people less and less job opportunity became available. This brought them into extreme poverty they need to find anything and everything to survive. This is why Manila turns into the most density populated area in the world 😢

I lived and worked in Manila, and I lived among them. I lived in a squatter area to save on rent. I just needed a place to sleep since I work 7 to almost midnight Monday to Saturday. This is one of the saddest truths in the Philippines. I have seen it with my own eyes and broke my heart! It has been my biggest dream to go back and help as much as I can. One reason I make sure my own children born and raised in the US don't waste food. We can always blame the government, but again, there is no family planning! Couples have kids year after year and can't afford to provide food and shelter. It's a self-disciple that needs to be taught at an early age. So many Filipinos from provinces move to Manila (I did) to find a better job to support our family, not everyone are lucky enough to find a good job and can't afford to go back to the province. As a result, many ends up like this in the video.

Unfortunately, some are being abused and exploited abroad too. On the other hand, those slum dwellers are mostly from the provinces who could have better food like fresh fruits n veggies and farm animals but tried their luck here instead of going back in their provinces. Bad luck in finding jobs here as they end up poorer due to higher cost of living in Manila but earning measly Ive worked in call centers before and pay is much higher than regular office jobs and some are even nursing graduates. This sadden us as a reality for Philippines corruption issue. Those are so disrupting images. As a filipino, I didn’t experience this kind of life but I believe everything starts with mentality of poor people to be embracing poverty as if blessing will come their way if they just wait for it. That has been the mindset of these people unfortunately. Also because of scarcity of food, that is all they will think of everyday, instead of learning new things to be out of poverty. They believed if they are living in Manila, they will have more income. Instead of living with abundance with nature, they choose to make a living in cities thinking they can earn more. So many country side people sacrifice and try their luck in Manila, thinking they could survive being illiterate. Until they get stuck with poverty because they cant make it due to in-competitive or no idea of how to use technologies because they cant even afford its full potential to make a living. All they know is either stay home, ask for free money on the streets, steal or snatching, some go into prostitution industry, get pregnant or have kids at the age of 16 because they dont really go to college or even finish highschool. I dont really know why is it like this here. I hope there will be a miracle for these people here. I just pray for them.

Thanks for digging deeper about the Philippines not only reacting to the music industry. The Philippines is one of the best countries when it comes to beaches and mountains, natural resources, the people, the rich culture and heritage. But one of the saddest part is about the people living in the slum areas.. jobless, homeless, less fortunate.. there are those who are the poorest of the poor and they resort to collecting food waste (Pagpag) as their source of living. It's a social peoblem for a long time and is still happening upto these days. I hope the government find a solution about this problem the bottom line is poverty. Many heads of the families are unemployed/ underemployed because of lack of education and yet these families tend to have more kids that's why these children are forced to quit from school and just look for jobs that have much less salaries but they have no choice but to do it so they can help their families. And these problems is like a cycle it will never end unless the people have bigger opportunities to support their families.

It's also a problem caused by us, right? When you know that you are poor you should not make decisions that would make you suffer more like, you already know life is hard but then you have more children than you could feed much more support the basic needs. And it is not like the government is not doing something. They are giving out help like 4ps which give the low income families monetary support. But some use that money for vices instead of using it to alleviate their situation. If there is one thing that should be changed - the requirements of hiring workers like how they emphasize on PLEASING PERSONALITY which means good looks and physique.I hope the employer look on the ability and qualifications of the worker more than just looks.
