Why do so many people hate on Ashton? At first I also did not really like the show without Charlie (big fan of him), but looking back, I think it refreshed a little bit the series and looking at it as a whole, it added a lot to the storyline. Just imagine if Charlie wasn't drunk, and he's in the show for a few more seasons, it could have been worse and forced. (And if you say after the leave of Charlie, the series went downhill, to be honest it already did at like season 5 :) )

I know, Charlie had a nice duality between being a charming guy when he wanted to, and a promiscuous, alcoholic cretin, which is not something you often get now. But sadly, Sheen left after he was not granted a rise on his already exuberant salary. It may have been better to end the series then and there, but at least they came up with an imaginative way to make Alan get back into his late brother's house again after he was kicked out. And, hey, they made a song about me too, above the comments!
