Trader Joe’s imports quite tasty speculoos from Belgium… along with butter almond thin rectangular cookies I like and some lovely shortbread ones I’ve bought the “real” version of in almost identical packaging (same goes for some cheeses I can get half price at TJs like Gruyère)… actually, all their imports are solid (though the Aussie sweets are wayyyyy too sugary!); the US made stuff is lackluster by comparison (oily, waxy, artificial like they didn’t use the right flavor compounds). They even import frozen japchae and plain, recipe-ready rice cake discs from Korea (the japchae needs extreme tweaking but when I need a meal in 5, I throw it in the microwave, toss some spices, a bit of soy sauce, sesame oil, and sometimes green onions or garlic chives or just pickled veggies and kimchi I -do- eat loads of in a bowl, and stir the noodles into what I’ve whipped together. Sometimes I add shrimp that were already cooked the day prior to it. Not amazing, but making my own is a bit tedious since I don’t eat much by way of starchy foods so a single serving makes more sense than having sacks of rice or glass noodles sitting around getting old when I work too many hours to do much cooking this time of year.

My mom just got one of those Costco pumpkin pies gifted to her for Thanksgiving and my entire family tried it for the first time last month. And it was, as you said, one of the best pumpkin pies I have ever had! Personally, I prefer a purple sweet potato pie over a traditional pumpkin pie. But I realized part of that was because most of the pumpkin pies I had before just weren't all that good, especially if you buy them from the store. And I realized that pumpkin pies that actually put some effort into it and make that custard like filling...now those were a proper pumpkin pie! Plus there was this other, random pumpkin pie slice with this lovely crispy topping that was like a cross between an apple pie and a pumpkin pie--and I don't even like apple pies for the most part--but this? Delicious 🤤. All that is to say, that pumpkin pie is back on my holiday menu lol 😅.

You can buy really nice pumpkin pie in the UK at Costco each November. If you share pumpkin pie with anymore British high schoolers, can we please level it up from the depressing looking versions they tried in the first video? 😂

😊Pumpkin pie MUST ALWAYS be consumed with Reddi Whip topping. Whip topping cuts through the spices(nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, star anise) and completely mellows the flavor of the pie into a slice of heaven. Enjoy Jolly! 🎉❤😊

I wonder if they knew that Trader Joe's is part of Aldi, specifically Aldi Nord. Aldi separated into two companies, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd (working with your brother can be difficult). Aldi Süd is in mostly English speaking countries UK, US, Ireland, etc, and is the one we in the U.S. is familiar with. Aldi Nord which operates in Europe entered the U.S. under the Trader Joe's name. So Aldi in the US is run by one company, while Trader Joe's is run by the other Aldi company. You will see a few common items in both stores, although rebranded.
@vin216411 ай бұрын
I looked this up, Trader Joe’s was founded in CA and sold to Aldi later. I wouldn’t say Aldi entered under the Trader Joe’s name since it already existed
@genghispecan11 ай бұрын
@@vin2164 That was back in the 70's when the original Trader Joe's was just a local discount grocer that bore little resemblance to Aldi Nord stores then and now. By design, the two Aldi's do not compete in the same markets - the primary exception being the US which sustains an astonishing number of if national, regional and local grocery chains. Both expanded simultaneously into the US using slightly different strategies - Aldi Sud branded itself Aldi and built its US presence from the ground up while Aldi Nord elected to acquire a small local retailer with a preexisting - albeit terribly small and highly localized - infrastructure to serve as its base in the US. In the process, they completely rebuilt it into something in line with their operations and philosophy, preserving only the name "Trader Joe's" to help distinguish the brand and avoid confusion with their estranged corporate sibling.
@johnhelwig874511 ай бұрын
@vin2164 Interesting. I didn't know that and didn't see that info when I did my research. Makes sense that Aldi would acquire an existing business. All I knew before this is that Trader Joes was under an Aldi brand. Thanks for the update.
@yomintyfresh11 ай бұрын
Aldi Nord in Germany also has a "Trader Joe's" store brand, but almost nothing available at the US Trader Joe's is available at Aldi Nord. I live in Aldi Süd territory right now but a few German Aldi Nord products I remember are nuts, craisins, peach iced tea, and jarred hot dogs.
@vin216411 ай бұрын
@@genghispecan the founder of trader joe's stayed on as CEO for a long time after the acquisition (until 1987), so they preserved more than just the name. Not sure where you're getting the info that they completely rebuilt it.

I learned from another KZbin channel that Trader Joe's is actually owned by Aldi, a German company. Two brothers founded Aldi together, had a fight, split up, and became Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud in Germany. Aldi Sud is technically what we have in the U.S. and the brother than owns Aldi Nord bought Trader Joe's (or I might have that backwards!).

One of my first LA experiences was in the theatre many years ago. It was there that I met and worked with Mr. & Mrs. TJ who were avid supporters of the arts. People think they still own Trader Joe's but they sold it almost 30+ years ago. While they were serving on the opera company's board of directors, I worked on many productions with their family. That along with a camera, selfie stick and light should be your basic go bag. You are missing out on a great branding opportunity too, you should sell Jolly picnic kits.
