Two Concrete Trucks Fill a Trench for a Botched Water Main Valve Repair

A water main in front of my house failed and construction began to replace ther main and add a new valve and re-connect our house to the municipal water supply. At this phase of the construction, two concrete trucks were brought in to fill the ditch with a slurry mixture (CLSM). It's not concrete, rather it's an engineered slurry that doesn't require packing like dirt and allows for the asphalt to be quickly laid without risk of the road developing a dip. They had some problems getting the valve access port to the correct level.

Let me just say, I love me a front loader with an experienced driver. We had a job one time and we harldy had to touch it... leveled it out, pictureframed it and done in record time. I tipped the driver $100 cash. I still dont think it was enough. That driver saved us so much time and work.

That is properly called “flowable backfill”. It is a mainly sand, gravel, water mixture with only 1 bag of cement. It is used primarily when it is a high traffic road or when mechanical compaction is not an option. That looked like ductile iron pipe (DIP) and it looked a little sketch. This was probably the best option for backfill. No need to worry about voids and it’ll be stiff enough for blacktop in a day or so. If they ever need to excavate around that valve again, that fill will break apart pretty easily. That being said, I saw some things OSHA would have a field day with.

No, what’s “hilarious” is that all of you who do know what it is treat the rest of us like dumbasses. When we read “TWO CONCRETE TRUCKS FILL” we expect CONCRETE to flow from the CONCRETE truck. We have no idea what flowable fill is. Y’all are quick to say how stupid we are for not knowing but don’t take the time to explain what flowable fill is. But I’m sure people like y’all know absolutely everything and never need things explained to you.

In some localities, the cement mixture is called two sack. It does not encase the valve like regular concrete and can be easily broken apart if necessary. Typically, this mixture is used in electrical work were conduit is laid under a parking lot or driveway with vehicular traffic. It provides good support to keep the conduit from being crushed and the ditch where conduit is set from sinking since the ground will never be compacted to 100% like what nature does.

To all the comments about the uses of concrete its not concrete, read the above telling you what the video is about its an engineered method of back fill that requires no compaction tools. It's a brilliant idea as there is less chance of disturbing the water mains connection. Now if a simple bricklayer from Yorkshire can work this out why can't the rest who have watched this video. I have never seen a truck or a method of back filling like it anywhere in the world but, I for one think it a really good way of repairing the infer structure . Just not sure about there H and S methods though 🤓

Flowable fill is a self-compacting low strength material with a flowable consistency that is used as an economical fill or backfill material as an alternative to compacted granular fill. Flowable fill is not concrete, nor it is used to replace concrete. Flowable fill is a controlled low-strength material made of cement, fly ash, water, sand, and typically an air-entraining admixture. This mixture is useful for backfilling utility trenches, mud jacking, pipe bedding, abandoned sewers, and many other applications. This mixture is capable of filling all voids in irregular excavations and hard to reach places (such as under and around pipes), is self-leveling, and hardens in a matter of a few hours without the need for compaction in layers. Flowable fill should have a compressive strength between 20 and 80 psi (150 to 600 kPa) so that it can be easily excavated for repairs, future installations, etc.

Well one of the things they forgot to do was wrap the pipe with plastic, that will keep the pipe from getting corroded when it touches a cement or slurry if it was used... Whatever material that was poured in is going to immediately start rusting up the pipe and corroding it... In a few years that pipe will begin to leak again...

lmfao omg the ladder setup has portuguesee written all over it. we called this u-fill its pea gravel and concrete sand and i believe ours was 7% portland cement. it gets pretty hard 100% compaction. with saying that it is more money than using a ho-pack, and you can lay ashphalt right away if you wanted to or had to, this stuff takes a while to set up, we would leave over night usually. but most cities prefer this in roads because people suck at packing if they even do it lol. in our town we are required to cover the bolts on the joint restraint so if need to ever take apart you can, you need jack hammer to get the u-fill off. we would this stuff was like small 1/4 inch styrofoam balls and some type of thick paste/clay type mix, would come in kilo block form, than wrap denso tape around the restraint, and weld an anode to the water main connecting both with a tracer wire, and weld another anode to the valve, and just lay the anodes on the ground on edge of trenches backfill around the pipe with clear stone to just over the top of pipe and around the valve cover the top the valve and base of the valve stem with something (garbage aka old portland bags, card board, plastic etc) so u fill doesn't stick to everything and fill her up!! this is ductile iron pipe, cast iron pipe with a cement lining on the inside circumference.

Hello Sheldon, an interesting video, (not only for kids). Here in Germany I worked for several years for water companies so I found the video so interesting. One of the biggest differences here is the used (and especially the huge amount of) concrete. That would not even be done in Germany with high pressure lines. Reason: The concrete used makes later possible repairs impossible. And the restoration of the former surface (sidewalk and street) will only be more complicated. Best regards from Germany.

On this project they didn't actually use cement, but CLSM flowable fill. It flows and instantly compacts so they can pave over it without worrying that a dip will develop in the road. Funny enough, this newly installed water main started to leak and the town DPW came and dug up again and fixed couple weeks later.

Hello Sheldon, Thank you for the info. We do not know such material here, so your description is all the more interesting. With us, gas, water, electricity and all telecommunication lines in trench construction are first placed in a sand bed which allows the lines to move slightly during earthworks before they break immediately. Over the sand comes a thick layer of gravel and finally the asphalt. If street water pipes are leaking here, you generally do not need a search device. Since such lines are operated with at least 10bar cracking leaks usually huge holes in the ground, but thank God that rarely happens. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the line is tight this time. Greetings from Germany!

That ladder and plywood deal is extremely dangerous. Wow. It is barely spanning the hole. Improper use of a ladder in the first place. If that guy falls in I don't know if there is any chance of getting him out. Stay safe!

Actually, since the density of this material is quite high (for example, compared to water), a person would not be in danger of sinking out of sight if they didn't move around a lot. You are correct, though, that safer procedures should have been used.

Any clue why that zig zag design is so common on cement trucks? Here in Indy, our IMI trucks have the same thing, although the colors are reversed of these here.

It's common to have some sort of striping on the drum so its easy to see which way its turning for the drivers. My company has a straight stripe, some guys have spirals, although those kinds make me sick if I watch them for too long.

Never heard of this flowabke fill stuff but from the comments it seems like the right choice. My only questions why not install some type of access vault around the valve for any future maintenance or repairs that may arise? Burning a valve in my nest any type fill doesn’t seem like a bright idea no matter how easy it may be to dig up.

Yeah i'm a concrete truck driver. This type of mix really isn't used much. Literally for jobs like this one. Also, those front loader trucks look awful to drive. I like the traditional concrete trucks.

These types of vehicles really very by state / region. A lot of that has to do with different weight and length requirements at the state level. If you travel look at dump trucks for instance they differ a ton between states.

That could be a possibility, depending on what the soils are. However, it's also not only a possibility but a very common problem which using soil-based fill, but seldom does anyone question the correctness of that method.
