The tower of London was originally one square tower called the White Tower. All the other building were added in later years making it all more of a castle but the name Tower of London stuck despite the changes. Canal narrow boats were originally used to move goods in the 1700s and the family lived in the small room at the back. The railways replaced the canals in the 1800s and gave people the opportunity to travel but because many people did not have a place to stay in other towns and cities the Railway companies built 'railway hotels' for people to stay in when they got to their destination.

Most canal boats have wood or coal fired boilers for heating, hot water and cooking hence the smoke you saw from the boats chimney. Others have bottled gas for cooking

On the narrow boats, the reason they can only stay for 2 weeks in one spot, it to help the canals and the water, keep moving, to stop the canals becoming stagnant

@@ThomsonTravelAdventures i follow a solo canal boat female, she lives on her boat, there is the canal authority that motors the boats, when your there, if you have a bost problem, you can give them a call for extended stay. like engine problems, Those that live on the boat, what they do, it drive there car a mile or two down the canal and park, then walk back to the boat move it to where the car is parked, so they can go to work, , do that for 2 weeks, they also stop next to water and waist outlets, to fill the boast with water, fuel and dipose of toilet waist and household, , these boats also only travel 4mph, the reason, is they dont cause a wake in the water, there is going to affect the canal banks, the wild life, alot of the comminity also work from there boats, giving services, cafes, hair cuts, and the likes,

In the Tower of London, all of the Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters) and their families live there. It most likely would've been one of them you saw. The 'tower' name comes from the White Tower, the large building in the middle. They were all private moorings in the canal. People live on them all over the UK. A canal boat holiday around the UK countryside is an incredibly relaxing time.

You pay to go toilet so that the toilets are kept clean, neat and tidy, therefore good for you to use etc. "Rough water in a canal" think about it, never 🤔. It's cold because its winter, simple. Camden locks water is cleaned, you caught it on a day prior to clean out.

You mentioned seeing people in the window of The Tower after dark - I recently found out that there are living apartments there for the Beefeaters (Tower guards) and their wives/partners.
