With all the things we have like cordless impact guns, sockets, flexible sockets, extensions, etc., I find it funny to realize that there was a day when mechanics were amazed at the invention of the box wrench!

I just found these videos and it brought to me the recent episode I had with my cars AC- the temp outside was 40 C and the AC was blowing hot air . I have had problems with the compressor throwing its' belt but this was more serious - the evaporator had blown . SO off to the AC repair shop. A$1000. later and having the dash removed to get access , the new unit was installed , the dash refitted and the system regassed , now it gets decidedly chilly even on our hot Aussie summer days . I also have replaced all the actuators in my car, real fun, as a couple had failed like the one in the Charger . Keep up the good work

When my son was 3 years old he began wanting to watch me work on project😅s. His 1st lesson was telling the difference between flat head and phillips screwdrivers. Next he watched me flip wrenches in tight spaces laughing at me saying why are you doing that it looks funny, so explained.....to make difficult jobs just a little easier. He gave me a weird look. Needless to say a couple years later , he's toying with my tools in the driveway on his bicycle, I watched him flipping wrenches, so I asked him why was doing that, his response was to make difficult jobs a little easier. Out of the mouths of babes... What a wonderful feeling that was, next lesson was putting tools back where you found them. Why? So next time you need them they'll be where they're supposed to be, 25 years later his tool box is perfectly organized.

Since I can't make snap-on tool payments, I have to make use of Harbor Freight for the rarely needed/nice to have tools. When you were fingering out the two 13mm on the compressor manifolds, I would have taken my thumb ratchet and saved on the carpel tunnel. They are some nice tools for close quarters combat. I'm guessing you have those in your tool arsenal also. But like you say, "I love my job so much....." BTW, I've been starting to say that to my customers also if I make a mistake.

My dad was a mechanic that worked on old fabric loom machines (before all of that work went overseas and he found himself unemployed with a lifetime of skills that he couldn't use anywhere else). My first car was a 1957 Triumph TR3. The starter died and in my newbie teenage ignorance I thought all I had to do was disconnect the wires, unbolt it, and remove it to replace the brushes. Disconnecting was easy, but there was NO WAY it would come out of the engine bay. Up required removal of the intake system. Down was blocked by the frame. To the front required remove of the radiator and the whole front bumper and cowl. 😡. Fortunately, the friendly guy at the foreign car parts store told me to leave in its hole, remove the shield, replace the brushes and put it back together. It would be best that before the commutator needed turning, I should sell the car!!! I drove it for another six months, sold it and bought a VW bug which was better suited to my mechanical experience and abilities.

Ray, I question leaving the PAG oil in the Compressor, as the System already has oil in it... unless it is totally flushed, it will be over charged with oil... the factory, rarely ever has the correct amount of PAG oil in it for the Vehicle that compressor goes into .... some have none, others are over-filled.. .... that Compressor is used in a LOT of different AC Configurations ---- no way, the Factory will know how many Oz of PAG oil is needed in YOUR vehicle.

Ray, do you ever oil balance your compressors? It looks like you just threw that new unit in without doing anything to it. You are supposed to drain any oil that you can out of the old compressor and either completely drain the new unit and add back the amount that came out of the old unit or drain enough out of the new unit so that the amount left equals what was in the old unit. You can't just throw a new compressor full of oil in like that or you'll have reduced system performance. Too much oil in the system can even grenade the compressor.

@@thk7513Here's your teaching moment, all handed to you to seize and make yourself awesome sounding... and you say 'Go figure it out' and walk away. Well done. :p @FlyEaglesFly19111, The compressor normally never sees any liquid except maybe some of the oil that may be in the compressor case because it was idle for a while. Oil is overall dispersed throughout the system. Any water that is in the system is caught by the dryer/accumulator. Should only be refrigerant gas and oil in the system, normally. If the compressor sees any liquid it's because the condenser is backed up with liquid as that's the only place besides the line that goes to the evaporator directly from the condenser where there is any liquid refrigerant. That's the point of the condenser, to turn the compressed gas from the compressor into a liquid from heat exchange with the outside air, then send it *directly* to the expansion valve/orifice tube and evaporator. And that liquid should only be about... oh... 1/3rd of the entire condenser's volume? Somewhere like that, maybe 1/2, but definitely NOT all the way back to the compressor. In all other areas of the system, the refrigerant is a gas, and there is no way the compressor should see liquid refrigerant, the above 'backed up' condenser (which is fed directly from the compressor) notwithstanding, and if that's the case that system is *borked* and needs complete rebuilding with all new components, no stone unturned. The worst case scenario of blend doors being closed and no air flowing across the evaporator is an iced up evaporator. Heat exchange will still take place, system will not care.

You have to have the xyw axis macro variable orientation algorithms of a robotic arm whilst aligned with Stonehenge at sunset to pull that out of there and go back in without snagging up. 😆

I find it interesting that you observed that A/C units have a high failure rate in the summer, mostly performance related. Must be a Florida thing. It makes me wonder if performance parts are available to provide more A/C power! I can see you installing a Banks A/C performance package in you truck! But seriously can you get upgraded A/C parts to improve cooling?
