Out of all of his more violent and action roles, this is my favorite Mitchum film. He was great in everything, but when he let his sensitive side really come out, it's a pleasure to watch.

A love the opening, NYC, early 60s, reminds me of uncle who was 39 in 1960 and living in NYC as an artist. I visited him many times at his studio apartment on 23rd street in the 1970s. Those days are long gone.

@@celticpridedrums I thought I was the only one to see this dreck for what it is. People are easily influenced by names. Mitchum, MacLaine, Wise. How could it not be wonderful? It isn't. It's pretentious manure posing as art. My husband and I waded through it for almost half an hour, then gave up.

Mitchum really shows his chops here, bringing nuance and vulnerably and a deft intelligence in his choices re: line delivery. The other star is Ted McCord whose very fine cinematography in other films is drop dead gorgeous here - a real master of latitude in black and white - perfection, really.

Mitchum one of my favourites, early Shirley always good but didn't really do much for me. I kept on thinking how corny, the script is trying to hard, not so much the acting, just what they had to work with I suppose. A cameo from a young Ken Berry ( F-troop) was a bit of a twist.

@@patrickryan1515 yeah, it *was* later mentioned in his apartment: something as to the 'personal investments' after 'taking care of HIS bed bug problem'. So, it wasn't 'banter'. One supposes, in any association, it's of value to have shared task performances. Task performances, testing the compatabilities and capacities of functionality. So, how did they as a couple move as a team - descending on those BED BUGS. END goal: the BED BUGS eradication. Btw, just as a heads up in life: 'when romance just around the corner' that IS the most VITAL time to look after one's self - that oxytocin (bonding hormone) does, and will, endanger one's quality (and quanity) of choices (that follow it).

I don't recall when exactly but I remember hearing NYC having a massive bed bug infestation sometime either in the 1990's or early 2000's, bed bugs are not due to the lack of personal hygiene, rather from mobility, luggage, moving from city to city. And btw, " oxytocin is a hormone released by the pituitary gland that causes increased contraction of the uterus during labour and stimulates the ejection of milk into the ducts of the breasts."

He was such a stupid womaniser. She was such a beautiful nice wholesome woman. He ruined her over and over. He should have swallowed his lame assed pride and made a good solid life with her. Wow the movie absolutely went over your head. He was not at all a womanizer but he was not 100% present and wasn't honest about his feelings. She suffered from a chronic lack of self love. This meant that she found ithard to receive love, gifts, reassurance. She found it hard to be vulnerable and to trust, That's why she would rather he beleve that she slept with Jack than to admit that she was sick.
