Things I’ve discovered over the pandemic lockdown or just prior: a relatively new (to me) crop of amazing all female rock/metal bands that I wasn’t aware of (such as NERVOSA & CRYPTA featuring ex-NERVOSA members), along with a bunch of cool bands from Japan with my top 3 favorites being LOVEBITES, BAND-MAID (whom I’m also seeing in LA in October) and NEMOPHILA - all by way of various KZbin Reactors, like Dana’s Faith (going back to when you ladies were a trio). “ADABANA” is definitely my favorite song from the band to date, and I’m anxiously looking forward to their show at The Whisky this Friday, especially since I live in Hollywood. I’m hoping NEMOPHILA will visit the Rainbow Bar & Grill up the street from The Whisky and check out the Lemmy (MOTÖRHEAD) statue in the outdoor lounge. If I don’t run into you both at the show, I know you will have a blast. I certainly intend to!🤘🏾

There are two ways to pronounce the name. The way you pronounced it "neh-MOFF-i-la," is the way Google shows it, and is the correct way to pronounce the flower they are named after. However, the band name is pronounced "neh-mo-fee-la." In Japanese, it is very rare, and therefore very awkward to end a syllable with a consonant sound (other than an "n," or an "s" sound, when followed by a silent "u"). So they came up with their own pronunciation that moves the "f" sound from the end of a syllable to the beginning of one. The pronunciation of the flower name is actually a bit of an oddity anyway, as usually when we see the "phila" root (meaning "love" in Greek), it is pronounced like "fee-la" or "filla" anyway (like in "Philadelphia"), so it is unusual to have the "off" sound in the flower's name. But that's how it goes with language sometimes, lol!
@OtobokeGaijin62182 жыл бұрын
In proper Japanese pronunciation, "s" (in contrast with "n") never ends a syllable (mora). I'm not sure anyone can say with authority how the band name (as opposed to the plant name) is pronounced in English. There's no reason to try to pronounce "Nemophila" as the Japanese do, as it's not a native Japanese word. Westerners don't pronounce "Band-Maid", "Lovebites", or "Mary's Blood" exactly as the Japanese do (unless they're speaking in Japanese). Most English-speaking reacters I've seen on YT stress it "Ne-mo-PHI-la".

There is no stress on any particular syllable in the word Nemophila. Every syllable is stressed the same. So, it's not really pronounced ne-MO-phila.
@OtobokeGaijin62182 жыл бұрын
I was looking at a couple of English-language dictionaries, and the stress is on "mo" (for the name of the plant). There's no reason to try to pronounce "Nemophila" as the Japanese do, as it's not a native Japanese word. Westerners don't pronounce the names of the Japanese bands Band-Maid, Lovebites, and Mary's Blood as the Japanese do (they would sound silly if they tried).
@johnbedinghaus23902 жыл бұрын
@@OtobokeGaijin6218 The band pronounces their name without stressed syllables so I'm going with that. I see no reason, as an English speaker, to vary from that. If I decide to use the word to discuss the actual flower itself then I'll consider the alternative. When in Rome...

@@OtobokeGaijin6218 Hard to tell really. If I was asking people to move mountains I can see an issue. Calling out differences in pronunciation is something I don't think is asking a lot of people. They may be English-speaking, but the Internet is worldwide, in case you didn't see the memo.

@@johnbedinghaus2390 Again, by your logic, Japanese band names such as Band-Maid, Lovebites, Mary's Blood, Unlucky Morpheus, Jupiter, Luna Sea, X Japan et al., would all be pronounced the Japanese way by YT reacters worldwide. Rather silly. Whatever.
