I had never heard of Savatage, but I was flipping around the channels one night and caught the last half of this video on Headbanger's Ball. I went to the mall the next day after work, picked up the cassette and played the crap out of it on my walkman that night.

@gregorykenfield31344 жыл бұрын
As others have already stated, Savatage is one of the greatest and most underrated bands to have come out of the late 80's/early 90's. There are TONS of great songs by them that you should check out, including "The Hall of the Mountain King," "The Edge of Thorns," "Chance", and a very often overlooked acoustic song called "Sleep." One of the cool things about this song is that you can hear the roots of what Savatage would become in their next life...you may have heard of the band Trans Siberian Orchestra? Savatage eventually BECAME TSO, and all of the elements of the TSO sound are evident here. In fact, the first hit song from the Trans Siberian Orchestra ("Christmas Eve Sarajevo") originally appeared on the Savatage album "Dead Winter Dead." One last thing...if you watch this video closely, you might notice that one of the gang members harassing that girl was a young Orlando Bloom! Great review...please do more Savatage in the future!
@dezzconnor83602 жыл бұрын
Sorry to disappoint you, but the gang member you mention is NOT Orlando Bloom. This video came out in 1990, when he was 13 at the oldest, and almost certainly didn't look like THAT.

Indeed! In addition to being quite possibly their best song ever, it is also their first dipping of the proverbial toe into the waters of taking classical compositions and giving them a metal edge treatment (as the intro track to HOTMK is none other than Edvard Grieg's own Hall of The Mountain King, entitled Prelude To Madness for the band's own song).

This was also the first Savatage song I ever heard, well before either of you were born. It ignited a fandom in me that goes on to this day...they truly have an incredible catalog of music which sadly has been quite underappreciated over the years. I never got to see Savatage itself in concert, but I've been to many Trans-Siberian Orchestra concerts over the years...it even became a family tradition until my parents got too old to get to the arenas. I really hope you two will dive deeper into Savatage's music. There's a lot of very powerful songs with some remarkably meaningful themes.

As so many others have mentioned, Savatage was so underrated. Criss was an amazing guitarist (RIP). Paul O'Neill really influenced them in the later years of the band and brought a lot of depth to their songwriting. Still have to laugh every time I see TSO and people freak out to the music knowing the band is comprised of Savatage band members from throughout the years. Gutter Ballet was supposed to be what became their next album, Streets (a full "rock opera"), which is why there's a lot of similarity between songs like this and the Streets album. I consider them two parts of a whole as far as the "conceptually linked" songs (Gutter Ballet, When The Crowds Are Gone) are concerned. If you liked this song, you will love more of their stuff from this period (1989) onward. Everything before was more focused on the traditional metal sounds. They got a new vocalist (Zak Stevens) in 1993 when the original guy (Jon Oliva) stepped back to focus more on his role of pianist/keyboardist (and he may have been having voice problems as well). Zakstuck around for about 5 years and 4 albums, with Oliva sharing in vocal duties from 1995 onward, then resuming full lead vocal duty in 1999 or 2000 when Stevens left the band... and then, Savatage was officially dissolved soon after. But, Oliva started a new project (Jon Oliva's Pain) which is essentially the next evolution of Savatage, as Oliva used JOP to complete and record all the old music ideas and unfinished demos his late brother started. This era ran from 2004 to 2010, with one final album released under Jon's own name (no "Pain" for this one) in 2013, and that was it. The Savatage story officially concluded and closed. The only thing left of Savatage is Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which "spun off" from Savatage in 1996, and released a handful of albums until 2015. A short while after, the TSO's creator, songwriter and producer, Paul O'Neill (who also produced Savatage since 1987) passed away. Since then, the TSO has not put out any new recordings (not even live albums - yet), but continues to tour annually, especially during the winter seasons (as their 1st, 2nd, and 4th albums were all Christmas-themed, and collectively referred to as the "Christmas Trilogy").
