Going to give this approach a go with my rfro this weekend in Oxford NC, TRUENORTH range. Best time so far is 7.20. Let's see what happens.

Let me know how it goes. Good luck! I tried it yesterday but didn't get the results I was hoping for but it felt good. Just need to train this way going forward. I think we're on to something!

I shoot this right around 7.25, and here is my thought about hand position. Think about a figure skater, when they want to spin faster they bring their arms in closer to their body. I used to shoot all my stages with a really far forward grip, which gives me good control, but slows me down. We put on light weight barrels so we can swing the gun faster, then stick 5 pounds of hand and arm way out front, which slows us down. I have found a good compromise for hand position that gives me speed and control. In my case, if I'm in to close I can overshoot a small far away target, but for S & H it's fine. When I shoot 5 to Go and Pendulum I extend out further because they are more of a precision stage. I also find that if swing from my knees and not my waist my cheek weld stays put and my misses are less. I used to shoot S & H 4,3,1,2, stop and couldn't get under 2 seconds. I now shoot 2,1,3,4, stop and this has given me much faster times. For a right handed shooter, shooting at the left plates first brings the gun up to my face more naturally. If I shoot the right plates first, the stock has to come up under my chin first, and my cheek weld is hit or miss. And I don't usually stop the gun on the big plates. It is my belief that a match is won or lost on the time to the first plate hit. If I can hit the first plate on S & H in .33 seconds, and the next guy takes .45 seconds, he loses. .12 seconds difference for 4 stages is .48 seconds. Now multiply that times 6 or 8 stages. On accelerator I shoot the big left plate first and the 10" next. Why? Because I can hit it in under .35 every time, and more importantly, never miss it. If I shoot the 10" first, I have a longer swing to get there and a better chance of missing it. And we all know that you never want to miss the first plate!!! So it always takes me longer than .45 seconds if I go that way. If it's possible I always shoot the big plate first. I do this on Outer Limits as well. That big far plate is easier to hit than the 12", and it's more in line with the cone. I shoot that in about 3.85 seconds. AND I'm 68 years old! So I need all the "cheats" I can find. Love your videos.

Thank you Al for the feedback and very detailed description of how you shoot Smoke & Hope. I have the stage setup in my backyard but I can only dry fire on the steel. Im definitely shooting the stage faster but not fast enough. Not yet! Thanks for sharing. Keep an eye out for a future video where I try your tips. Enjoy, Terry

@@TwoGunTerry Thanks for reading my comment. I have all the setups in my back yard as well, but can only dry fire, and I can tell you my improvements have been huge last year just because of the dry fire practice. Yesterday I set up just the first 3 plates of Accelerator, 10" left, rectangle, and right far rectangle. I wanted to see if it was faster to shoot the 10" first or the close rectangle first. In a nutshell, the rectangle first was faster FOR ME. In ten runs average, the results for just the 2 plates are: rectangle first, .705 with .35 first hit average, for the 10" .856 with .62 first hit average. I also had 2 misses on the 10" plate shooting it first, with none on the rectangle. The split times were faster shooting the 10" first, but overall the times were slower, and the miss factor was mentally making me slow down. Maybe with some practice, and my confidence goes up I'll be able to shoot the 10" first, but for now it doesn't work for me. Next I shot the 3 plates, after I was really warmed up. Shooting the rectangle first my average was 1.09, and shooting the 10" first was 1.37. I was wondering if the long transition from extreme left to the extreme right would hurt, but FOR ME it did not. Also, the first shot on the 10" is 12 feet from the aiming cone, and only 4 feet for the rectangle which accounts somewhat for the slower first shot on the 10". Just some random thoughts from a retired engineer with a lot of time on his hands!!

Gonna given this a try. I changed my order from 2-1-4-3-S to 3-4-1-2-S and finally got in 7’s. A little faster for right handed rifle shooters to draw to 3 vs 2👍

I'll give it a try again. I used to shoot that order. Frankly, Ive tried every order on S&H. Finally, Im training on actual targets but dry firing. It's been two weeks but last match I scored high 7's. Very high 7.92 or something like that. I can and will do better but it's a start! Never give up!!! Terry

Ive been struggling with it. At least at shooting it like a Grandmaster should. I wont stop working on figuring it out. At first I thought it was because Im an old fat guy but other old fat guys can don it. I must be able to too!!! Think positive....always! Terry

Hey Terry... have you gotten under 2 seconds yet? I would suggest that you limit the number of direction changes as each time you change directions costs time. Watch Bratcher Jr... Kenny N, Grant, or any of the top shooters... they all change direction once. By the way.... Bratcher Jr. shot a 1.08 second string at worlds this year with his PCCO. Good content!

Hi Vintucky Firearms! I am fighting a few glitches with Smoke & Hope. That's the reason for my 6th different shooting order! The goal is to shoot straight across when it finally feels right. 1.08! One can only dream!!!! Except Bratcher Jr. that is!!!!! Thanks, Terry

Shooting my second Steel Challenge match this Saturday in RFPO and RFRO classes as a Super Senior. I'll be using your advice on Smoke & Hope for sure. My rifle is almost identical to your rifle and I couldn't be happier with it. Its ridiculously accurate and very smooth; I couldn't be more pleased. Lloyd Michigan and Siesta Key
