It's not a single race, it's quite a few of them, each in a different category and rules of its own regards to car configuration. They have a pecking order at the road out there, car that can successfully overtake and out pace the other car gets right of way and the other car has to move away to make space for the faster car and therefore keep atleast some amount of safety on the track. Think about it like normal cars on a road making way for an ambulance.

I remember Senna in Monaco taking curbs where the water splashed against the wals like a god damn hurricane hitting shore. What are the battles now a days ? Where are the COJONES . I remeber the 1995 Belgian Grand Prix con Schumacker and Hill which was beyonnd reality with Schu on dry tires under the rain, blocking Hill on wets. Or Senna. Prost . Or Senna on a Tolman blowing past Nikki Lauda on a turn. In 10 years the drivers will be in the paddock driving remote control cars. But hey there is still Horse racing.
