You didn't make a mistake shooting in 16:9. Even if you shoot 16:9, the camera still records the entire 3:2 sensor. Open up one of those 16:9 RAW files in lightroom, then click on the crop mode and you'll see what I mean. Even if you shoot a photo in 16:9 in camera, you can always change it back to 3:2 in post. You didn't lose any pixels.

Does the A7R III behave the same way in aps-c mode? It would be great if the entire frame was still in the raw file.

8k is 7680 x 4320 = 33,177,600 = 33.1 Megapixels. 8k is 33.1 MP Also 4k is 8.1 MP Marques Brownly & Potato Jet (as well as other youtubers) have spread misinformation saying that 4k is 12 MP. 4k is actually 8.1 MP. Now this is in 16:9 aspect ratio. Most photo cameras are 3:2 aspect ratio because that is what a full frame 35mm is. Therefore there is more height to the image. Meaning there is more rows of pixels on the sensor. Since there is more rows, you have more pixels. So you can conclude that you want a 12 MP 3:2 sensor in order to have enough horizontal resolution to exceed 3840, giving yourself enough room to crop in on the sensor for active stabilization (in video work). By taking photos in 16:9, you are doing the equivalent of cropping off the top and bottom of the image. Which you stated that you wanted to do in editing anyway. So you weren’t loosing anything that you were going to use anyway. You still had enough horizontal and vertical resolution for an 8k video file. The a7r iii sensor has a resolution of 7952 x 5304. When you shoot in 16:9 your resolution is 7952 x 4473. You only need 7680 x 4320 for 8k video. So you still have room to crop in a little when editing your timelapse. All that being said, i shoot in 3:2 because i like my timelapse to move a little in the video. Maybe add some artificial camera shake in the editor or key frame some pans. Good video. I enjoyed it. Just wanted to leave this comment to help clarify what resolutions you said you were trying to shoot for.

The apsc mode is if you are using a crop sensor lens, as a crop sensor lens will create a circular image because they are designed for a smaller sensor. not to use that mode if you have a full frame lens.

Using the part of the sensor rather that the whole sensor would reduce the mpix count, how would it not? On a A7 3 you get 10 mpix in super 35 mode, and having the topic of the video come up after 40% of the video might night be the best idea

I would always shoot in the maximum quality the camera offers i.e. 42 M. However, if you want to create 16:9 picture, then you always have to crop the picture hence degrading the quality of the picture. So there will always be quality loss, whether you crop inside the camera or in post processing (thus the method I prefer)

Many “features” merely look attractive, but actually has limitations, which makes many of such features superfluous…virtually of little effective use. Eg: You can engage Mode A, but certain functions are no longer available in Mode A. Or, you can shoot 4K, buts its significantly cropped. Or many features are unavailable when you shoot high frame rates. Its an endless list. All contributing towards a hugely extensive menu system which gives the impression of a feature laden camera thats over-priced.

If you're going to crop your timelapses to 16:9 to match your videos, your second "mistake" isn't actually a mistake. You might as well crop to 16:9 in camera as the extra megapixels top and bottom will eventually be lost surely?

So you’re not wrong at all. But even so, when I am photographing I don’t like to in 16:9 ratio, so between timelapses if I take stand-alone images they are too wide for my liking. Ah dude......your second point is null and void. Changing the aspect ratio only changes the JPEG files aspect ratio, hence why it states 36MP in the JPEG image size. When you load the RAW images into Lightroom, they will display as 16:9 (which is the ‘AS SHOT’ setting) but if you set the crop size to ‘ORIGINAL’ I’m 99% sure the whole 3:2 image will be there.

@@KevinEassa I think you’ll find you are wrong on this mate. The only time the resolution of the raw file is changed is if you use super35 mode which is a mistake you’re already familiar with. I suggest you test this yourself. All the raw data is their, it’s only affecting the jpeg. Just like when you shoot pictures when the camera is in s-slog or a different picture profile other than OFF. The JPEG will look like s-slog or the currently selected PP but the raw images are unchanged. Just try it for yourself mate. Just change the setting in the crop tool in Lightroom from ‘AS SHOT’ to ‘ORIGINAL’

@@KevinEassa If you use 16:9 in RAW, just hit R in Lightroom and you'll see the full, 3:2 image appear in the crop view. It's the same on my A7R iii and A7 iii. In APS-C crop mode, the crop is baked in and you can't recover the data. I don't shoot JPEGs either, just RAW. Huge mistake I made was buying the A7RIII. Your video came up when I was searching how to connect to the PC. I have watched over 7 videos with issues on connecting, and I still cannot connect...Settings on the camera PC remote, USB tether, update firmware 3.1, update Edge, Even tried the independent remote as last resort. Rebooted.....NOTHING...Everything works, like the PC recognizing the USB connection, BUT the crap software will not find the camera as I double click the camera it sees in the list. I even cleared the settings and still nothing. I tested the cable, and it works on my other cameras. So with this, and the SD slot being picky, and the ergonomics being horrible to painful for large hands, and the setting wheel is super easy to change by mistake, and the back buttons hard too recessed for backbutton focusing..... Geez did I make a mistake buying this crap!! I was promise all the issues I had with A&R2 would be fixed with this. Yes, it was faster, and it was able to focus, and the lens mount was not sloppy loose like the R2, but....this thing is more a toy than a professional camera. Yes, I LOVE the sensor, but that's about it.

Time-lapse photographer? I know about time-lapse photography but didn't know that you could be a professional time-lapse photographer. You learn something new every day. Speaking of learning something new, perhaps I can enlighten you as well. The crop mode on your A7RIII is an image coming from the cropped area of the sensor. It is no different than if you were shooting in full-frame mode and then cropped the image to match the framing of a crop sensor image in post. That part you got. What you may not be clear on is this mm equivalent nonsense. 1. The lens does not magically turn into a higher magnification lens. Your 50mm lens remains a 50mm with the same compression and same depth of field for the given aperture. Where people get confused is when you try to match the framing between an APS-C camera and a full-frame camera using different lenses and/or standing at different distances from the subject in order to match the framing (i.e. changing the depth of field which is impacted by aperture setting, the focal length of the lens, and distance between camera and subject). For example, let's say you want to have a similar framing for a model, so you first use an A6400 with a 50mm lens and then, from the same exact spot with the model at the same distance from the camera, you then use your A7RIII with am 85mm lens. The "framing" will be similar (though not the same). That is, the size of the model in the center of the picture will be the same/similar, but the rendition will be different in terms of compression, depth of field, and field of view (what you capture on the borders of the image as you use different focal lengths). The full-frame shot will have a more compressed view from front to back, will have a narrower field of view, and shallower depth of field for the same f-stop because you have a higher magnification lens on the full-frame camera. Conversely, the APS-C shot will be less compressed from front to back, will have a greater depth of field because of the wider focal length, and will have a wider field view of the subjects on the borders. Now, this is super important, and where most get confused...if you were to take the same picture again from the same distance, but this time using the same 50mm lens on both cameras, and then cropped the full-frame shot in post to match the framing on the crop-sensor image, you would end up with the same exact image (except for the quality of the cropped image, since you are losing megapixels). That is effectively what you are doing when shooting a full-frame camera in crop mode, except that you are doing the cropping in-camera as opposed to post (I won't go into the differences between cropping the sensor image or the image in post as that would take us into a much deeper rabbit hole. For purposes of this illustration, let's assume those have the same exact effect). 2. That brings me to point number 2. The reason your crop-mode images looked degraded is because the crop mode in a full-frame camera is effectively throwing away pixels. So why is it that an APS-C sensor isn't doing the same thing? That's because that sensor has more megapixels crammed into that smaller crop sensor area. For example and A7III has 24 megapixels on a large sensor. An A6400 has the same number of pixels, but on a smaller sensor (I'm not going to get into pixel pitch and pixel size for the purpose of this explanation or this will go on forever). So if you crop your A7III shot to match the framing of the A6400, you are in effect degrading the quality of your picture far more than if you had shot it with the A6400 because it is using its full 24 megapixels. Now, this is where it gets interesting. When using an A7RIII in crop mode, which has 42.2mp in full-frame and about 18mp in crop mode, the crop mode shot doesn't result in that much of a difference compared to an A6400. Yes, there is still a 6mp difference, but that won't be as noticeable unless you crop the heck out of the shot in post after shooting in crop mode (think of it as first cropping in camera and then cropping again in post). Contrast that with the A7III which reduces the quality to 10mp in crop mode. Now you are talking about a difference of 14mp, which is definitely more noticeable. You can still get great images with 10mp, but your ability to crop in post will be substantially limited compared to the same crop shot from an A7RIII. Now the A7RIV solved this dilemma by providing you with 26mp in crop mode. As such, the A7RIV has more megapixels in crop mode than the A6400 has natively. So if you have an A7RIV, you effectively have a full-frame camera and an APS-C camera all rolled up into one body.

Actually APS-C mode doesn't have "worse" quality at all, actually it's more of the opposite. Lenses are always the sharpest in the center so if you're using a full frame lens and shoot in APS-C mode you only use a center portion of the sensor, so your image is sharper (as if you would just crop a center part of the image out). Also don't confuse resolution with quality. 8K doesn't have a better quality than 4K, it just has a bigger resolution. If you had an 8K sensor but a very bad lens the image would still not look sharp, whatever you do. That's worse quality.
@bondgabebond4907
@bondgabebond4907 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like he is saying the resolution is much lower, even by aps-c standards. Sure the lens is the sharpest there, but if he is worried about resolution, then why not use an aps-c body like the a6600. When viewing something in motion, no one is going to pay attention to resolution. So, 18mp will probably be just fine. I've done some time lapse on my a6600 and it looks great watching storm clouds moving. I'm not pixel peeping at that time.

Canon R6 - so many rave about it - very new camera - Full Frame - Yes 20MP - so 18 is enough for lots of work - online for sure - so very handy to have this option - and yes how often do we not crop in post. - and yes we are lowering MP count just like the Camera does - The very Popular Nikon D3 pro camera had 12MP Nikon D4 pro has 16MP Nikon D5 a $5000 camera had 20MP and the Nikon D6 is 20MP - photography is not all about MP - for video Sony A7s III. is what 10 or 12MP and a pro camera - one of the most used camera for video work is the Panasonic Lumix GH5 which is a Micro Four Thirds sensor and 20MP - High MP is good for particular photography but for video not an advantage

I must be getting better cause your Mpix issues are so self-evident to me... or maybe it's people getting worse with numbers, mainstream media culture sure doesn't help.

three and a half minutes in, and you still haven't mentioned one of the two "mistakes". This is such a typical click bait video where you just talk in circles and don't really get anywhere. Please get out of my feed.

7 Minutes bla bla for 2 obvious settings that can be mentioned in 10 seconds. Good example why YT is more and more a waste of time, mainly because of such click bait youtubers.
