For this reaction, we listen to The Dark Side of the Moon. An album that would recently celebrate its 50th anniversary, which is crazy because it doesn't skip a beat after all these years. This album is the definition of timeless music with its amazing instrumentation and its themes that continue to relate after all these years. It's no surprise this album is still talked about and one of the most famous albums of all-time.

Great Gig in the Sky was sung by Claire Torry. The guys told her the song was about death and dying. She did it in 3 takes, although the first one she just sat and listened. The second take she did scat style, the third take is the one on the album. When she left the studio she wasn’t even sure that it would end up on the album. The guys paid her 30 bucks, the going rate for a studio musician at the time. She ended up suing the band for writing credits for the song. Pink Floyd didn’t mind using guest vocalists and musicians. They had a deal set with the Beach Boys to do some harmonizing on The Wall, but conflicting schedules prevented that from ever happening. On “Have a Cigar” Roy Harper sings the lead vocal.

Probably one of the most analysed rock albums of all time. I'm an "older" PF fan and yes its sounds just as fresh and relevant as it did to me back in the '70s. Mental health (which wasn't talked about much back then) is a major theme. The terms Loonies and Lunatics derive from the word Lunar meaning "of the Moon". The spoken phrase at the end "there is no dark side of the Moon really, matter of fact its all dark" actually went on to say ".... the only thing that makes it light is the sun" but that was chopped off as it seemed a bit too upbeat at the time. Personally I like knowing that "upbeat" bit exists😉

True art will leave you contemplating its meaning, not always fully understanding what it's about. But it is within that contemplation that the spirit and the soul are touched and you find a meaning far deeper than you may ever fully be able to intellectualize. So don't trip about not understanding. It obviously moved you. It did its job!! This album will not only stay with you, but will evolve and grow in power in meaning as the years roll by. The wait was worth it! I wish my editing was as good as yours, and of course I love Pink Floyd! There are a few Pink Floyd recommendations I would giving if you are willing to read: The Wall is not quite on par with this one or Wish You Were Here, but it has the most cohesive concept, the best transitions, and the best hits. However, be warned with The Wall, there are some lyrics that can seem like Pink Floyd has gone Anti-Semetic if you are not following along and paying attention on side 2 of disc 2. Before listening to The Wall I would listen to Echoes (off of the Meddle album, no particular storyline from that album). Everybody either says listen to the Live in Gdansk version or the Live in Pompeii version but I would listen to the studio version first. Echoes is considered Pink Floyd's masterpiece by most and the studio version is absolutely fantastic. Then I would listen to Live in Pompeii and Live in Gdansk in order in your own time. Live in Gdansk is particularly special because it is the last performance of the song by David Gilmour (guitar and lead vocals) and Richard Wright (Keyboards, which basically means all of the background touches). This is because Rick died just a month after the performance due to cancer. David said he would never perform the song again without Rick, because with Rick he is totally in sync, totally natural. The only other albums I would give a try besides The Wall and Meddle if you are up for it is Atom Heart Mother (besides the final track, unless you like breakfast), The Division Bell (one of my favorites), Piper at the Gates of Dawn (their first album to see where they started), and Obscured by Clouds (skip the last track unless you like tribal chants mixed with a pipe organ). If you really want to listen to the entire catalogue I will give you one singular warning: NEVER LISTEN TO Umma Gumma OR More. The more you listen to Pink Floyd the better it gets! Also you probably learned this but The Great Gig in the Sky is about coming to accept death, and dealing with grief. Claire Tory's vocals were the embodiment of that, and were done in 3 takes. The first she did her usual "oooh baby" but David told her they did not want that, so she did improvised vowels for takes 2 & 3 which were mashed into the solo you hear today. To edit and add on, she was asked to be a session musician for Pink Floyd on a Saturday but she was busy at some concert so she was rescheduled to a Wednesday when she did her vocals. She was only payed 30$ (400$ today) for her legendary session. She later sued and it was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum and afterward she was given credit on later pressings. My favorite track is Us and Them btw, the more you listen to it the more it becomes your favorite, at least in my case. Time was my favorite for a while for me too. Also, I am not sure if you are aware, but all lyrical concepts are done by bassist and sometimes lead singer Roger Waters. Watch Polyphonic if you want to understand more Pink Floyd! I remember he once said, "There is no light or dark side of the moon, there is only a gray area." This comment is going to grow forever.

So glad to see more folks encountering this legendary music! As you note, there's lots of deep stuff you can get into in pretty much all of Pink Floyd's music. That comes with time and repeated listenings, though, so no rush. If you want to try more of their music, definitely consider The Wall. It's based on an actual storyline about a fictional character named Pink, and it might be easier to follow in a first listen. (The album's long but the songs are generally pretty short.) Anyway, keep on being awesome!

On the run was based on Richard Wrights fear of flying and a commentary of touring bands not being able to stop and breathe in the air. But it was also experimental in audio technology and locomotion. Sounds moving around the microphone. Definitely for headphones..

The first half of this album is about life. Heartbeat. Screams. Breathe in the air. Being born. Join the rat race (Run rabbit run) how succes tears you down (riding on the the biggest wave, you race towards an early grave). On the run, life crashes like a plane. And then Time. (An all time great, you figure its meaning out yourself over the next few decades. But I can tell you this song rings more true the older you get). When we finally relax (Breathe reprise) it's too late. Finally we reach death and dying. In three stages, denial, anger, acceptance (the great gig in the sky). The second part of the album is about human nature. Greed, war, alienation, madness and the realisation of the futility of it all. There is a reason this album is so highly rated. It speaks to everyone. Of all ages.

Side one of Dark side represents life through death. The first song , speak to me ends with a screaming , as in birth. Then Breath in the air…. Talking about life. Time is about how fast life goes by. Great gig in the sky is about death and going through the stages of grief , denial and then acceptance ( the three sections of this song) . Side two is about money , greed , war, and mental illness . It ends with a heartbeat as it started. Enjoy the ride fellas!! This album is 51 years old and the sound effects had to be created, recorded and spliced . They didn’t have the technology. They were pioneers of that time! Look up the making of this album. Claire Torre’s vocals for the Great Gig were done in one take...... the nay sayers are harping on about the initial opening , without rehearsal, that was abruptly stopped because it used word sounding syllables of oooh’s and aaaah’s. The brief and only real instruction was no words...... now go for it girl , sing us a song without words, instructions, melody or rehearsal. lol

It took Clare Torry two takes. She was in the same studio by chance. Roger Waters hadn't been able to write suitable lyrics yet, so they asked Clare to improvise. After the second take, the lyrics were no longer needed.

Alan Parson( the producer) hired her as a session singer. Initially she wasn’t able to make the date they wanted her but they agreed on the following weekend. She sang as David suggested to use her voice as an instrument. The rest is history.

You both had trouble with the Great Gig......? The album is about life, our life. Side one deals with pre birth to birth, through the dictates of society or just surviving ( run ) to death. Side 2 deals with the material side of life from MONEY to the pressures of society , government, religion and other people...... which in the end drive you crazy. Maybe the lunatics drive you insane.... to the dark side of the moon. Maybe you are the lunatic ? The Great Gig is about the 5 stages of DEATH from denial to fear to anger to acceptance and then PEACE. Time is about life from start to death..... I treat Time and The Great Gig as one song..... the prelude followed by the end. Claire Torre’s vocals on the Great Gig were done in one take..... Idiots claim otherwise because she had no lyrics, no instructions and no melody to guide her. When she started singing the band stopped her saying the OOOH’s and Aaahh’s were lyrics and words. She then made it up on the spot with O’s and R’s only and did just the one take , got paid and left after apologising or doing a bad job of it. She never believed it would make the album until she heard it on the radio years later. Many years later she sued the band for a cut of the writing credits...... the court ruled that she did in fact write the vocals as she made them up. She then performed it live with the band but not a good performance...... by then she was too old and her voice was no longer as supple and controlled. Before you listen again, read the lyrics and whatever is written about this album. THEN...... when you listen again, you will notice that the music and sound effects always tell the story ...... sometimes, the words are just not needed when the music is that clever.

Regarding your comments about "Time". Someday... is TODAY! (Animations good but... Remember... English blokes, so the 'football team' would be what you call a 'soccer team' lol) I saw your slight confusion over the line "Don't gimme that goody goo BS"... that's during the part of the song paryading excess, and he's saying his money is his, and quit hounding to do philanthropic charity stuff with his money... He's a high rolling jet setter who needs to buy his own jet, more than helping others. hope that clears up the meaning of that, and the following couple of lines. As for the fainter 'voices'... one of 'em wrote down a bunch of random questions, and they asked folks around the studio to answer them... you never hear the questions, just the random answers to them, when there playing those parts... (fun fact, as much as they searched, the original cards with the written questions disappeared... so far, supposedly, four ever.). Of course "Us And Them" is about war, Ordinary men, and its not what they would choose to do, the general ordering an advance, the front ranks dying, just to move the lines on a map... "haven't you heard, it's a battle of words, the poster bearer cried"..... that would be an antiwar protester, and... "come inside, said the man with the gun, there's room for you inside"... is obviously a recruiter/the government. The 'Busy Day', and 'old man dying', is expressing how even as the awful war is raging, back at home, folks are just wrapped up in themselves, not even noticing what's happening around them. Oh.. Ok.. you looked it up, but I'll leave that comment as I hope it offers a bit more clarity as to the actual lyrics.(I pause and comment as it goes along. lol.) Lunatics on the grass... in the hall... finally in his head... nothin' to see here... just a slow devolution into insanity. "If the band you're in, starts playing different tunes".... reference to their old guitarist, Sid Barret, whom, before they split(and he went for long term psyche care), where he would get on stage, and just get stuck on a single chord or two... he was in a different place, hearing different music... it was the beginning of his decent into his own personal insanity. (side thought... the song "Wish You Were Here", is also a nod to good old Sid.) OOPS... commented too soon.. ya looked that one up too. lol. Finally, re: the heartbeat beginning and end, I didn't start commenting from the beginning of the album but the first song, Breathe... is about birth, and the start of a life full of possibility. with the new heartbeat ending the world... the final heartbeats is the end.. death... just as everything in life seemed right, "everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon... fade out dying heartbeat. Was fun watching you guys... first I've seen of you. (the reason I can sort of explain the album is, I'm 63... I bought this album when it first came out, when I was 12. A lifetime of listening, and experiencing so much of the album personally, the lyrics just sort of 'click into place', a bit here, a bit there... great gig in the sky is about death/dyeing/ and the 5 stages of grief, "denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance" next time you give it a listen ,,,listen for the timbre of her voice changing to each of these 5 stages, in order,,,nothing short of genius brilliance these guys are/were,,,,i was 12 yrs old in 1973 when i first heard this,,you think your mind is blown,,,try being 12 when this was brand new, before anyone knew what a monster success it was to become,,,,,,,,,,,,,and its better today than it was then, it never gets old to me,,,just better and better there is talk that roger waters (the writer/bassist) is planning to remake it , with his own band, without the other 3,,,,i say dont mess with a masterpiece for one,,,,and for two,,,it wouldnt be the same without the 4 original guys,,,"leave it alone roger,,,perfection cannot be recreated/duplicated, its a magic that happens in that moment and the chemistry between four guys,,,,,its already perfect leave it be

Regarding Us and Them, Roger Waters' (bass, lyrics) grandfather died in WWI and his father in WWII. Also, at the time this album was made, the Vietnam war had recently ended. Suggestion 1) Guy on the right (white sunglasses), don't talk so much. 2) You both need headphones.

If you liked this album, then you really need to react to Ok Computer by Radiohead if you haven't listened to it already. That band is a whole other rabbit hole to go down, but there's a lot of amazing stuff there. If you want to react to some more experimental and weird albums here's some of my favorites. . Slint - Spiderland (1991) . Black Country, New Road - For the first time (2021) If you like Spiderland, then you'll like this one. Their second album 'Ants From Up There' is even better imo. . My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (1991) . The Microphones - The Glow Pt.2 . Swans - To Be Kind & Soundtracks For The Blind I'll warn you that these albums are 2+ hours long, and get very intense. . Xiu Xiu - Girl With Basket of Fruit This is definitely he weirdest of this bunch.

I enjoyed your reaction and unique editing, as usual! 😵‍💫 Sorry Gorak, but I cannot listen to The Great Gig In The Sky. I really don't like that kind of vocalising. "Time" is the best song for me and has the best guitar solo. This "oldhead" always loves David Gilmour's guitar solos. It is an experimental album and I much prefer the other two you have already heard. Animals is their best album IMO.

@@TheIngobernable Yes, you are right dude. For most of my life, Wish You Were Here was my favourite album, but Animals is the new #1 for me (from about 6 months ago). I am writing from Pink-Floyd-land (England). The singer/guitarist David Gilmour lives a few miles from me in a five storey beach front property with his recording studio built out the back! I have seen him and his wife walking around the city a few times. Kind of surreal. It felt like I was in one of your crazy edits haha!!! 🤣
