HEALTH UPDATE: Hi, so I shot this video last week and then when I went upstairs, the world turned upside down rather literally and I was overcome with an incredible vertigo that made me barf for days. It appears that I have something called labyrinthitis. I'm getting better, but recovery is slow, so I'll try to keep making videos, but I won't be around as much as usual. Sorry!

My story that is still being written: I went to University in June of 2016 and felt entirely alone. I ate lunch alone everyday, went to classes and activities and concerts alone, and would finish each day with going to bed alone. Finally, I had made a few friends, and started eating lunch with them occasionally. On February 3rd, 2017, I was eating lunch with one friend and was wearing my Pizza John t-shirt and hoodie. It was a normal day to me. Across the cafeteria, a boy wearing a Pizza John t-shirt flashed the Nerdfighter gang sign at me, so I, obviously, flashed it back, to which my friend said "what the heck was that?" I then invited that boy to sit with me and explained to my friend what Nerdfighteria was and how this random stranger could come sit with us because he was a Nerdfighter. That day, I met my best friend, and I didn't even realize it. The rest of the semester, we would stay up late watching Lizzie Bennett Diaries and playing Pokemon Go. The night before he was to fly home for the summer, he hugged me and told me he loved me, to which I responded "I love you too." He is now serving a mission for our church, and will be gone from school and the rest of the world for two years. I miss him immensely, but I could not be more grateful for Nerdfighteria introducing me to my best friend. DFTBA everybody! Love is real and it is awesome.

May I also recommend that you get clear plastic storage tubs for holding your wedding gifts when you do get married? They are fantastic for storage throughout your life and if you're still at a point where you move frequently (college, living in apartments, etc.) they become a fantastic resource. You can pack or store in them, they keep bugs out of stored food, you can see in them to find things you're looking for, and you don't have to pack or unpack all at once if you have these nice bins making it look like you've got your life together. :)

I'm really excited for Sara and Luis. I was the one weirdo who was standing behind them both in the photo (I know, placement sucks :P) and the photo goes to show how far reaching Nerdfighteria has gone over the years. Most of us met in either 2012 or 2013 through our local nerdfighter group and attended gatherings through 2014. Two of us are admins of that group, a number of the others leaded up expansions to focus in LGBTQ+ identity, chronic illness support, fandoms, musicals, and more. None of us would have met each other without the common interest in John and Hank's content and this just goes to show how amazing and real the relationships made from online groups are. Dear John, As cheesy and accepting as this might seem but I honestly don't say "why this doesn't happen to me" because i have many people In my life who provide me with love including you and your amazing brother, and if romantic love ever comes to me I welcome it but I don't wait for it and stop my life, and I don't get why people get lonely or sad because they're single.. You came to Orlando four days after my wedding, while my husband and I headed north for our honeymoon. Someone asked for advice and [cut to a man proposing on a stage]... It always strikes me as the height of rudeness to propose to someone in public. The poor woman has to deal both with the magnitude of the question and the fact that many people, many of them strangers, are now staring at her. I am always amazed when in an American film, the man proposes to the woman at the dinner table of a large family gathering. Do real people actually do this?

This is where it's important to know your audience. Some people love public proposals. The idea of their significant other doing this big thing in front of a crowd or in the presence of family or whatever is very exciting to them, and for them it makes for a really enjoyable experience. Others want such an intimate moment to be kept private. They want to experience the joy on their own and share the news with others on their own terms. (I myself was in the latter group.) That being said, ideally a proposal should never be a true surprise where the recipient isn't sure how they want to answer. If it were, certainly an audience could make the situation worse. But the vast majority of married people I know had had discussions beforehand about whether they would like to get married and it was pretty well understood by both parties that eventually the relationship would head in that direction. So if you're at the point where you know the relationship is headed toward marriage, I think it's totally fine to mention to your SO something about your preferences for how a proposal would work (or whether you want one at all). I definitely told my fiance that I didn't want a public proposal. He was happy to comply since he wanted his proposal to be something I would enjoy.

I'm the man that proposed on stage and hear me out... I can agree with that to an extent. This was not my request nor my idea. John Green offered me that opportunity and a lot of people said that it made them feel warm. I always intended to do a private proposal, but when i saw that it would make not only Amy and i very happy but a lot of others as well i decided to accept John's idea. Don't be so jaded though! Amy was very happy and said this was the one exception to doing it in public because it was perfect. If you watch the whole video it is a lot better than that short clip.

When you're feeling better, John, and you don't need to cheer yourself (and everyone else) up with delightful true stories like these, I wish you'd make a video on loneliness. Because some of us don't have amazing tales of nerdfighterlike and nerdfighterlove or even nerdfighterbff and we're just out here alone in the world trying to make it meaningful for ourselves, and it's tiring and sad and has no foreseeable end (except for death, as you would say on Dear Hank and John!). I know that you and Hank have wonderful wives and adorable children and an incredibly close relationship with each other, but you must remember what loneliness is like, or at least know people who are lonely and have (or haven't) found a way to get by. Life is tough enough without trying to get through it on your own. We could use some encouragement - or even just a moment of acknowledgement and recognition and virtual companionship. Peace and good wishes for a speedy and comfortable convalescence!

I do have bizarre illnesses. I don't know why. None of them seem to be related to the others. I may be more susceptible to infection than most people, but that doesn't explain the esophagitis (which is an autoimmune problem). I'm lucky that so far I've been in pretty good health most of the time. Looking forward to recovering from this so I can say that again! -John

How Nerdfighteria Brought Me My Two Great Loves: A long comment. I met my now best friend and third half in a Harry Potter class in college. But we didn't become friends until we went on a road trip together from our college town to meet John in Phoenix on his Paper Towns tour. She is my first great love and best friend. Later that year, a Nerdfighter gathering was hosted at our university by a mod of the Ning. I became fast friends with a guy at that gathering - and then I met his roommate. He's now my husband and we've been together for eight years. John and Hank have been a huge influence on the best 10 years of my life. I love this community.

I met my boyfriend through a chat in the Dutch & Belgian nerdfighter community. We've been together for over 4 years now and it's been really wonderful :). My fiancé and I met thanks to Nerdfighteria too. Not at a meet up, but on youtube itself. We started watching each others videos and then we started talking on skype, and then I realised I liked her... I told her, she took some time to process her thoughts and feelings, and then we got together. That was nearly 5 years ago now... we got engaged in the summer last year. One small hitch; she's American and I'm English. At the present we're still not sure how we'll be able to move to be together... neither of us is earning enough for the other to get a visa and move to that country... but we'll get there one day. Hey, while I'm here, if you have any advice that might help us to get to that point, it would be much appreciated.

I know the first nerd couple! I met them and most of the people in their wedding photo in the Nerdfighters of the Greater washington DC Area group in 2012/2013 when I came back to the DC area after college. So happy they were included in this video! And so grateful to John&Hank for the community that grew around them and the real life groups that formed because of them. I met my partner through the queer nerdfighteria Facebook group I started. I was in America and they were in England. A hear later, I moved to England to go back to a job I'd had there and it took me another whole year to meet them because they were agoraphobic. They moved closer, I moved closer, they proposed, and we get married in less than a month! I was single to 10 years before we started seeing each other. I'm grateful for the Nerdfighter community that helped me figure out how to be queer in real life and that brought me to my person.

The fact that you recognize you might have a problem says that you do want to keep living in some capacity, hold onto that. Keep reaching out, videos, advice forums, close friends, maybe family. You'll find the help you need.

Hello! I don't know what stage you are in life but I know that most schools have councilors that you can talk to for free if that will help you! That may be a little less intimidating than going straight to the doctor's. And even if what you have is not what you think you have, the doctor or another professional can definitely help you out with some of the negative things you have been experiencing. When I was in a dark place, many times encouragement for me was the knowledge that every Tuesday and every Friday I would get to watch a new vlogbrothers video - and I don't know why but that was enough. Look for small things that used to make you happy. I would also suggest dogs. Dogs always know. There are also many online and phone resources that you can use. For instance, you can call 1-800-273-8255 any time to get help from someone. They will listen to you and help you to figure out next steps. You can do this. A quote I learned from John Green is that "....the only way out, is through." DFTBA.
