Two-Minute Mountain Bike Fork Service with Lee Trumpore

Sometimes your mountain bike suspension fork needs a quick bit of service and love to keep it running smoothly. The foam o-rings at the top of the lowers do a great job of retaining oil and keeping grit out, but sometimes they can get dried out. Might aswell take the lowers fully off dump old oil and replace with fresh oil.

What kind of oil should I use for forks? Is there a specific fork oil I should use or is using a standard bike lube enough?

@@cesarsaladd_ I use canola oil for downhill. It soaks up the hard hits and slow rebound. Coconut oil for anything else as it has a smooth all around feel.

The bushings have channels to let oil flow through. So I flip my bike upside down all night before a ride. Cycle the fork a few times for good measures. Then your good to go. 👍

and you don't risk getting dirt under the seals so they can scratch the hell out of your stanchions.

Nope. Never happens. I’ve been doing it for years. Besides, thats what the seal is for. Keeping dirt out. I actually got the tip from Mountain Bike Action magazine.

If you go through the hassle of almost removing the lowers you might as well do it properly and remove them all the way and replace the foam rings and crush washers. Also doing it properly will hopefully make you clean the fork first so you don't get dust and crap stuck inside the fork doing this half arsed service. I personally turn the bike over and leave it for 10 mins, clean the stanchions and lube the seals with silicone. If the fork is in good shape the oil will find its way to the foam rings when upside down. That makes the fork a little bit juicier. OR I do the small service as described above. The foam rings are cheap and super easy to replace, the seals can stay for a season.

The only problem is that when you release the bolts at the bottom of your fork u need to replace the crush washers or chances are they’ll leak oil .

It actually depends on how tight they were before it is quite common that forks from the factory have a lot of meat in crush washers :)

I did a half dozen full services on this fork last season, those are the original crush washers. Going back to 1998 I don't recall ever having a fork leak from the foot bolts. Obviously if the washer is mangled, sure, you'd want to replace it, but on many forks they have more than a single life span if you don't torque them down unnecessarily. If you're concerned you can pick up a bag of what is essentially the same thing for cheap at most hardware stores.

If they are cleaned and not deformed they will still seal fine. I've only done it a thousand odd times and not had any issue

Plus the rod pulled into the lowers will actually do a lot of the sealing. The fork hardly leaks when you remove the bolts, the floodgates open once you tap the bolts and rods in. Plus the 200h kit comes with two airspring crush washers, but the damper side washer is so large i don't see how it could fail.

How about just sitting the bike upside down for a bit - no reason to undo the bolts at all. Or store the bike vertically or upside down and they're always be lubed.

I get it if your fork feels real bad and you're about to leave for a ride...but if you have an extra 15 or 20 mins...why not just remove the lower legs and do the 40h service? The legs are pretty much already off. Lol...if my fork was feeling bad and I need a quick fix...I'd just use some stanchion lube and then do the 40h service before the next ride.

You don't need to dot hat for the 50h service. It's lowers off, wipe it off, take foam rings out, clean them, resoak them, reassemble (with wet foam rings and add butter grease to the wiper seals), plop the lowers back and add lower lubricating oil. Job done.

No need to for the lower leg service. Just don't take the circlip retaining the air spring sealhead off.
