The slam-door stock passing through Wimbledon is the former class 423 (4 VEP) and class 414 (2 HAP) units; the 2 HAPs being withdrawn in 1994 and the 4 VEPs being withdrawn in 2005. 4 VEP unit 3417 still survives in preservation.

@@CitytransportInfoplus I grew up and lived in Wimbledon at the time of this video being filmed so this was an everyday scene I remember with fondness as a teenage bus and rail enthusiast back then. Thank you for sharing.

+citytransportinfo the fact it was never used when it was run by BR/NSE says alot really. It's much better as a tram route though,It even mich unlike BR at the time got brand new 456's on the route though they were there to replace the elderley 2EPB's.
@CitytransportInfoplus9 жыл бұрын
+CpfcNate yes but a train every 44 minutes was not at all attractive to passengers. Its as if BR did not even try to attract more people to use the service. Nowadays a tram every 10 minutes (or even more frequent) has shown just how busy an urban railway can be when the transport operator runs a service that is designed to attract passengers.

+citytransportinfo yeah I know. Mind you BR was a shambles despite the romantic view of BBBR

Thanks Alex. I have more historic footage from here but will wait until the S stock underground trains start coming to this station before making a 'contrasts' film.

Well, 8 years on, the S-Stock trains are well and truly here. It would be great if you could post some more footage of Wimbledon from the 90s if you have it! Do you have anything from the SWML platforms? I'm interested to see what was there before the Centre Court shopping centre was built and how the station looked back then.

C Stock doing the Wimbledon to Edgware Road part of the District whilst the D stock did the main services. Them good old days.

I do not know! btw, 1973 (Piccadilly Line) tube stock also had a red band,and there was one train of 1962 (Central Line) tube stock which also had a red band on the driver cabs.

Will try this next time I'm there - and will try to do so with the same microphone plugged in that I used most of the time when I had my S-VHS camcorder.

Sounds like a good idea, then you get a bigger contrast.

Can i ask why the unreferbished D stock had a red band below its cab. The 1983 stock also had that feture and i have always found it odd.

Probably just to make up a 10-car service, like how today you get two 4-car Class 455's joined up with a 2-car Class 456 to make up 10-car services

Like the unrefurbished C stock at the begining you don't get trains leaving termini that quickly these days it's a shame you didn't film a refurb C stock deaprting because then we could here the contrast in sound.
