Two Motorcyclists Die In Freeway Crash | Irvine, CA

08.25.2024 | 12:11 AM | IRVINE - Two motorcyclists died in a freeway crash following reports of reckless riding involving a group of over 50 riders, early Sunday morning.
The deadly collision was reported on the northbound I-5 Freeway just south of Culver Drive around 12:11 AM when callers said two motorcyclists riding recklessly lost control and crashed.
As many as 50 motorcyclists along with other high-end vehicles stopped nearby as bystanders initiated CPR on both of the downed riders until medics arrived, additional callers reported.
Unfortunately both riders succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased on scene by first responders.
A full freeway closure was initiated with all traffic being forced off at Jeffrey Road while authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision.
There was no word on whether any other motorists might have been involved.

I don’t ride motorcycles, but I do try to be aware of them and nudge over if I can to let them lane split safely. Sometimes they approach a little too fast and since I can’t see in all directions at the same time it’s possible if they come up to me too fast that I won’t catch them in time to move over. Otherwise, I think the majority of motorcyclist are really well-behaved in my opinion and I’ve never really had a problem with them, but I do notice that when you get a whole bunch of them together in a group is when their behavior starts to go sour. It’s just a group thing I think, you get that with cars too.

Over my years living in SoCal since 1985, I have witnessed 2 bikers going down right in front of me. One at about 40 a car changed lanes and took it out. Another 2 Palm Sunday’s ago on the 55 south by Katella, a large group of Ninja bikes I saw in my mirror doing about 100 in the HOV lane when all of a sudden I hear crashing and a bike with it’s rider comes tumbling in front of me on the far right lane, parts flying. We are going 60 and I had all I could do to swerve around him, barely missing. He looked like he broke his legs, as he scooted on his butt over to the exit ramp, all scraped up. Then last Labor Day in downtown Brea a teenager was trying to learn how drive a Ninja bike on top of our parking garage when he hit the throttle and drove the bike into a cement wall, k*lling himself. The stats speak for themselves, you are 30 more times like to be seriously injured or k*led on a motorcycle in an accident than being in a car. Be careful out there peeps, respect everyone and everything.

Keep in mind the stats look entirely different when taking out unlicensed riders, un-helmeted riders, excessive speed and intoxication. Yes motorcycles are more dangerous, but the greatest danger faced by the rider is often times themselves

I love everything about traveling on two wheels, I have had tremendous enjoyment. I understand that may be my cause of death. But I will die anyway. I would rather live between now and my death than simply being alive between now and my death. If the risks outweigh the benefit, then don’t ride. If the joy outweighs the risks and the risks are manageable, ride. So many people focus on the death part of it, they miss the living part of it

One of our maintenance people cut himself while working on a hydraulic line, rapid onset infection became life threatening, lost his arm to save his life. Life is terminal. “Banning” potentially dangerous things sets us on a patch to tyranny. I may not get this quote right, but I would rather live in dangerous freedom than in safe slavery. I have over 100k on two wheels. Some of the people I ride with are closing in on a million miles over 50, 60 years of riding. We have no guarantees, all we can do is make choices. Some choices obviously lend themselves to certain outcomes. Instead of banning things, we should encourage and incentivize good choices.

Those were accidents that could not be prevented. The people who died in this video would have had a higher probability of staying alive if they were traveling at a high speed in a 4 wheel or larger vehicle. Just think of the unending trauma and pain of a mother on the freeway driving her child to school and she changes lanes hitting a killing a biker because she could not see it in her 2022 SUV blindspot because the bike was very small, compared to a car, SUV, or pickup. I would never condone tyranny, martial law, or dictatorship. Only safety. Fault means nothing when you're not alive anymore.

@@grtlover Looking at the damage to the motorcycles, they were most likely riding recklessly, had they made different choices they would likely still be alive. Yes it was my coworkers choice to go out onto her porch, she could have chosen to stay inside, or wear a different pair of shoes or hold onto a hand rail etc. Heavy industrial trades people are far more likely to suffer injury or death than an office worker, it was his choice to enter that career field. He made a choice not to wear gloves, he failed to notice the sharp edge etc. Where do you draw the line at accidents versus people’s choices when invariably their choices contributed to a condition where the accident could occur? Whether something is a choice or not doesn’t negate we never know what will happen and we should have reasonable freedom to enjoy our lives as we see fit. Who are you to decide what should be banned or not? Who are you to propose banning something that lot’s of people handle responsibly just because of the tragedy of someone who couldn’t? Do you really believe that someone who is inclined to reckless behavior can be stopped from reckless behavior? Do we ban rock climbing? Mountain biking? Sun tanning? High calorie nutrient deficient foods? Where does it stop?

It takes a 16 year old, a weekend in most States to complete a Motorcycle license endorsement. That would in effect allow you to ride a Motorbike with a 200HP motor, that does 0 to 60 in about 2 seconds, and requires years of experience to handle. Compare that to the System in the Netherlands for example. At the age of 16 you can get AM License(Scooter with a max speed of 45 km/h (25mph?)). At the age of 18 you can get your A1 (Max of 11 HP) The year after (age of 19) you can get A2 (Max of 35 HP) Or, if you're a beginner and don't have the a1, you have to wait till you're 20 to get A2. For an (unrestricted License) you either have to be: - 24 years old or 21 if you've had your A2 for at least 2 years. Another option is to start as a complete newbie (no license) at 21, do the exam for your full license, but get a restricted license (AKA max of 35 HP) till you've had your license for either 2 years or if you reach the age of 24. I have been an avid motorcycle rider for over 50 years. Unless the licensing system in the U.S is modified to a sensible program, these tragedies will no doubt continue.

This is really sad and such a tragedy that most likely could have been prevented. Such a loss of life just because most likely someone was going way too fast. I don’t know how many times I’ve had a motorcyclist whiteline right next to my car on the freeway as I’m driving 70 mph just inches away from my car and had I not seen them, the slightest move of my car to the right would have knocked them right over. I really wish they wouldn’t do that but they do. You’d think that they’d learn after seeing so many motorcycles go down but they continue to take chances and go past the speed limit like they’re invincible. By the damage shown in the video, it appears the blue bike ran into the rear of the white bike at high speed. According the description the two were among 50 riders riding dangerously. The exact speed is not known an$ I would imagine he (the OP) was just guessing.

He didn’t get the front wheel back down soon enough to steer successfully around the curve, and went into a tree at maybe 30mph.

That's the world for you man. I try to ignore peoples malicious judgment on others...
