Two New Magnetic Toys

Firstly, we have an example of diamagnetic levitation. Diamagnetic materials are repelled by both the north and the south pole of a regular magnet. However the effect is a very weak one. Water is diamagnetic, and also a substance called pyrolytic graphite, which we show here.
With a small2 x 2 array of powerful neodymium magnets, it is possible to levitate a small piece of pyrolytic graphite. However this is a variant of that, and it involves an array of neodymium magnets, with small pieces of pyrolytic graphite floating freely above the array.
The second toy involved correlated magnets. This type of magnetism was only invented in 2008. Basically correlated magnets normally work in pairs, and have a complex arrangement of magnetic elements (maxels) on their surface; these can vary in size, orientation and location. In combination, the two magnets can be made to attract at a distance, but repel if they get too close (a combination of longer range and shorter range magnetic forces). In this example, the magnets are extremely hard to separate when they are in one orientation, but if you rotate them 180 degrees, they can be separated more easily.
We will probably see a number of applications in coming years for this very new technology.

For about 5 year then the fluctuating heat and the constant connection of the magnets would slowly give out making it so even when they are in the (lock) position they would still be able to be pulled apart

@@RinSyuveil will it work with neodymium magnets? The door leading to our apartment is closed with neodymium magnets
@markc7955
@markc7955 3 жыл бұрын
@@nekopushyo Hi. Is it electric entry to the building? The magnetic bars around the door? More likely to be electromagnets rather than neodymium allowing you to open the door once you key your fob and the power turns off for a few seconds. Small magnets could used in the locking mechanism. If so my mistake. These would act more like clothes theft tags. Where a key would move a magnet to unlock the door. I’m probably over complicating it though

There are currently clamps designed with magnets which can be turned "on" or "off" with the twist of a handle. These can be used for things like attaching temporary work lights to metal surfaces. I'm not sure if they use a pair of this kind of magnets or simply a screw inside that pulls the magnet away from the steel base. I don't think this would be useful in any normal construction to replace stationary screws, but might be interesting as a toddler-proof cabinet latch.

Graphite is made of carbon, which is non-ferrous (not containing iron) and therefore cannot be magnetic. This particular type is highly diamagnetic, which means it is repelled by magnets. Most materials have some diamagnetism, but it's stronger in this type of graphite. You may think of it as anti-steel, in regards to magnetism.

these coded magnet experiments are very interesting. I have seen one experiment where you get this magnetic locked position very simular to super conductors when at the proper low temperatures. I to date have not seen if there is a magnetic deterioration of the field strength if the masgnets are in the locked position for an extended period of time. I guess its a test that needs to be done and posted at some point. These magnets are much to exspensive for a large air hocky table
