Setúbal receives Nau Santa Maria, a Spanish ship, and Vera Cruz, a Portuguese caravel
The unprecedented presence together of the two vessels stems from the Exploraterra project - “Preservation, enhancement and promotion of the cultural heritage linked to the I Circumnavigation and Geographical Maritime Expeditions”, co-financed by the Spain-Portugal Cross-border Cooperation Program, which has as partners the Nao Victoria, the Junta de Andalusia, Turismo do Algarve, Xunta de Galicia, and Aporvela.
As part of this project to enhance and promote the cultural heritage associated with maritime expeditions, Aporvela is organizing a set of activities and joint navigations with vessels related to the Discoveries, which travel along the Portuguese and Spanish coasts.
The first of these trips, from the 23rd to the 27th of February, organized with the support of the Municipality of Setúbal and the Administration of the Ports of Setúbal and Sesimbra, is a unique opportunity to get to know the Nao Santa Maria, a replica of the vessel captained by Christopher Columbus on the voyage that led to the discovery of America in 1492.
The caravel Vera Cruz, which has been to Setúbal on several occasions, joins the Spanish ship in this first voyage of the Exploraterra project and both are available for free visits, open to school groups and the general population, in the port of Setúbal, next to from Docapesca.
