I recommend you fast for 2-3 days going into your first sermon. The scripture says out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. Remove every obstacle in your belly and let the Spirit freely flow.

Fasting is a great spiritual discipline sometimes forgotten about. I've said a prayer for you brother 🙏. May the Lord use you mightily and may the congregation receive and apply.

Where does it say that in reference to fasting? If you're talking about John 7, that passage has nothing whatsoever to do with physical fasting. (Just like the prior chapter is not telling believers to be cannibals.) It's a metaphor. "Belly" or "heart" = the inner person. @@EveretteMoon

@@Yesica1993 I understand that. But the Bible uses the word “belly” when it relates to gratifying the flesh, and carnal desires. When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating. (Job 20:23) For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. (Ro. 16:18) Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) (Phi. 3:19) The reference in John is not just talking about the Spirit in the saved believer, but how that life giving power (the water) can be carried to those who are athirst. From the believer will flow (extend) its blessings to others. And the most effective way to do that is to deny one’s flesh, and in this case I was suggesting he literally deny his flesh from food.

Yes and yes. One frustration that I have is when a preacher does not attend to the force of the words in the text, and uses the text as a pretext for some other message.

There is one book that every preacher should read. E.M. Bounds "Power through prayer". I pray this helps someone that is truly called by the Lord to preach the word of God.

Great video Matt. So right, the text is interesting...we dont have to make it interesting. Ive also found for me, that hand written notes more helpful for me to be me. So I have journals of my sermon outlines. It has been something I've had to work on to find my voice as a preacher. This year im trialing a reMarkable for preaching so i can use a pen in my prep and outline creation...and have it electronically available.

My problem is that maybe I'm too much of myself. I'm a very mellow guy, very un-charismatic and unexpressive... That's how I talk to people, and that's how I teach. I call it teaching because I feel that I'm missing the passion that is usually behind preaching. But I feel weird to put on this passion, and then go about the rest of the day being mellow. I don't want to be putting on a different persona as you said.

This is great advice, you will never preach someone else's sermon as well as them. I do have a question though. My wife says i have developed a "preaching voice" i guess it has to do with cadence and tone. Is this a bad thing?

I don't think it is a bad thing as long as you are not always preacher voice. Inflection is a good thing if done properly.

Listen to your own sermons occasionally. If you make yourself cringe, try to loosen up and be yourself!
