This is probably the best video I have ever seen on the importance of the BCP. I have the 1662 International, the current English version of the 1662 which has a couple of different lectionaries in it, as well as the American 1928. All of them are very similar and very beautiful. Thank you and God Bless.

Just stumbled onto this video and really appreciated it! I come from an evangelical background and ended up leaving my church years ago for many reasons, mainly because it felt so over simplified, ultra individualistic, and suspicious of anything "rote"/non-spontaneous. I don't remember being overtly taught that other denominations were "questionable" (at best), but when I left, it was my denomination or nothing at all. I had no concept of any other way of being a true Christian. Not long afterwards, I read "Evangelical Is Not Enough," which blew holes through my inherited suspicion of liturgical prayer and worship. I probably would have refused to even *read* a Book of Common Prayer, much less use it, back in the churches of my youth. After closing the door on Christianity (as I knew it), I never imagined going to church again - beyond weddings, funerals, or visiting beautiful or historical churches just for the aesthetic. Fast forward 20+ years. I really wanted to get back to God, but couldn't stomach the denominations of my youth. In fact, I wasn't sure I could stand *any* church that claimed to be part of a denomination. Then I found an Anglican (ACNA) church, and I have never looked back. Our church uses the 2019 Book of Common Prayer. There are copies in the back of every pew, and I bought a nice leather bound copy for myself, but I am still getting used to it. (I suspect that's true for a lot of other former Evangelicals in my church!) Your video really hit the nail on the head of why having a collected book of prayers (among other things) is so beautiful.

This is similar to my story. I walked away from evangelical churches because the theology was watered down. Sermons were more of the preachers opinion than what the scripture says. Needless to say I've started going to an Anglican church ( ACNA not C of E). The daily office has helped me to instill quiet times with myself and the Lord. I am praying more, reading and meditating on more scripture than ever before. The Book of Common Prayer is awesome!

I just ordered the 1662 Book of Common Prayer today. Yesterday, I attended my first Anglican Church service. I grew up Baptist (parents) and Methodist (grandparents) and, as an adult, mostly attended non-denominational. I married a non-practicing Roman Catholic. I wanted to get back into church on Sundays and wanted my husband to attend with me. I can't participate in a Roman Catholic church, but I was also disillusioned with modern Christian churches for various reasons. I researched, and Anglican seemed to be a good fit for both of us since Anglicans are both Catholic and Protestant. We are both looking forward to going back next Sunday. For anyone who is in the situation we are in our marriage, where you come from different backgrounds, or if you are disillusioned with the modern Christian church, I would tell you to try Anglican. But just as there are in many churches today, you still need to research because there is division even within the Anglican Church.

@@MegUSN52 I hope the Book of Common Prayer is a blessing to you! And Anglicanism is definitely both Protestant and catholic! It holds firm Protestant convictions like justification by grace through faith and sola scriptura. It also retains a very high view of Holy Tradition, an episcopal structure (Governed by Bishops), a high liturgical structure, and a high view of the sacraments. If you’d like to learn about this further, I recommend you read “An Apology of the Church of England” by Bishop John Jewel. @@evansustar8478 I just found an antique copy of the BCP with hymnal from the church of Ireland dating to the 1890’s . So cool knowing saints with the same daily struggles held this book and read the same words as we are .

I'm a lifelong Nazarene, went to a Nazarene University, but--even though the Nazarene Church is one of Anglicanism's grandchildren--I had never heard of the Book of Common Prayer until I was forty. When I discovered it, it was like finding a long-lost treasure. Now I use it daily (now using the same edition you show here) and it has meant so much to me. Evan, thanks for the great video. I am from a Charismatic Catholic background, also practicing Anglican Daily Office. It's true that the Daily Office is extraordinary. In fact, God himself directed me to use the Daily Office. As a fellow Pentecostal, you would understand when I say "God directs" me. I learned to pray intercession and read the Bible regularly from the Daily Office, two things I really long to be able to do in my Christian life. What's extraordinary is that when I worship in a prayer meeting once a week, I really feel that the Daily Office has somehow made me very close with the Holy Spirit, perhaps through the psalms and intercessory prayers. As a Catholic Charismatic, doing this Daily Office really blesses me. Because my native language is Indonesian, while the Anglican church in Indonesia has very few congregations, I compiled my own daily office from English BCP sources on the internet. I translated it with the help of an Indonesian Bible, because as you said, 80-85 percent of the Daily Office are Bible quotations, so most of the materials in the Daily Office can be recomposed using Indonesian Bible quotations. I base my Daily Office prayers from BCP 1979, but for the lectionary I use BCP from ACNA 2019. For some basic prayers and confessions of faith I use the versions of what are already used by Indonesian Roman Catholics. Even in compiling this, my own personal Indonesian Daily Office, I felt God's extraordinary guidance. He really wants me to practice this Daily Office, to worship dan praise Him.

The Pew Edition of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer has a blue cover and is larger than the green edition. I ordered if from InterVarsity Press. It is wonderful! I am so glad you pointed out this wonderful prayer book.

Thanks for your work on this. Eastern Orthodox prayer books are also an absolute treasure. Similar to Orthodox Anglican prayers in many ways and very rich in theology too. Holiness repentance and reverence are persistent themes.

@@evansustar8478 Thank you for your accepting approach to orthodoxy. I accept all Christians as brothers and sisters set on the narrow and difficult way to Christ. We are simply on different parts of the map but with exactly the same destination which is Christ our Lord and our God. Though Orthodox I can easily accept those of your confession as fellow believers and I too much defer to BCP 1662 which is a highly Orthodox document in many ways. Great video! I found the Anglican Province of America church, which uses the 1928 BCP. The APA was formed to break away from the "woke" Anglican church. It keeps a simple service, using the BCP. A Psalm, section from OT and section from NT is read aloud in unison together. We recite the Apostles Creed or The Nicene Creed together. Communion every Sunday, kneeling at the altar and drinking from common cup of wine. It feeds my soul.

There is sort of a give and take betweenm Lutheran and Anglican liturgy. Lutheranism inspired Cranmer to adapt the Romish liturgy to German (and later Angloo-Lutherans adapted that to English, with much wording the same as Cranmer's prayerbook). However, as England slipped further and further in Calvinist doctrine, the B.C.P. (Book of Common Prayer) was somewhat altered further and further to reflect the teaching of Zwingli and Calfin. In my view, it is better to use the Lutheran service books than the B.C.P. itself. I use both and I use eacu pf these quite a lot. You made a fine discovery, lad!

I made a small mistake, It was Luther himself, not Cranmer) who adapted the Romish Latin liturgy into German. (He also reformed it in Latin itself, for those who know Latin.)

The best Lutheran service books in English are those across the years of the Lutheran Church Missouri SYnod. The Lutheran service books also inclue the Lutheran hymnal.

Unfortunately, evangelical Protestants are, as a whole, so ignorant of anything outside their narrow world. I know of what I speaks as I was raised Wesleyan Methodist and left because they were so anti-education. I remember a truly Godly minister being fired for taking a correspondence course on Biblical history for sermon preparation. I still can hear one of the church leaders: "We don't need no ejj-gee-kay't'd preacher. We needs a Godly man!" WHY couldn't he be BOTH!?!?!?!?! I discovered this video by accident. GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!! Did you know that you can buy the 1928 American BCP and the KJV of the Bible (including the Apocrypha) bound in one hardbound volume for about $100.00 from an Anglican church in Athens, GA. I had the same frustration with extemporaneous praying. Also, I find it divinely serendipitous that Mother's hellfire-and-damnation family were originally several generations before the Methodist Holiness movement moved to SC in the 1890s active members of the Church of England!
