This is excessively cued in barre in nearly every position! omg! Barre used to be my absolute favorite fitness class, now I see why I'm having such bad compression in my low back, with the constant tucking of the pelvis on top of the different exercises involved flexion of the spine including the pilates abdominal curl, not to mention on top of sitting a lot at home and driving, it's all making sense now. sheesh thank you for sharing this!

in qi gong they tuck the pelvis because its helps grounding and sinking the Qi. I guess we can be flexible when standing and using the curve to extend.

Hi so glad I just came across your page! I’m a massage therapist so I Love hearing about this but I have a question for myself, I have anterior pelvic tilt and s curve scoliosis, I was taught yes in yoga and my own adjustments that the tucking in retrains the muscles pulling at my pelvis and balances them out of course no longer then 5 mins but I do get great relief! Is it bad only when someone’s spine is curved perfectly or okay when someone’s anterior tilt is extreme ?!

We would not recommend doing this :) specifically with a scoliosis... when someone with a scoliosis tucks their pelvis ... it will cause an exaggeration of their rotation and lateral bend ... you can test that out :) look at what happens to the ribcage rotation ... it will look more pronounced. Tucking the pelvis can create small temporary relief due to a mechanical stretch of low back muscles... we just don’t want you to cause any issues as mentioned above in the video . We hope that makes sense 🙂🙏

What would be some exercises to get you out of this posture? I have been like this for years, and now have really bad neck / back pain as a result.

Makes a lot of sense, but dealing with lower disc and facet joint degeneration and problems I find tucking the pelvis relieves pain. Any suggestions?
@Life360Summit

Please please don’t 🙏🙏 disc herniation occurs 99% of the time in the posterior direction... tucking the pelvis pushes the discs further in that direction 😳 ... we understand tucking the pelvis can sometimes give brief/temporary relief as it lightly stretches back muscles ... but please please as we would recommend you stop 🙏 as long term this can lead to more problems specially with this condition. We hope that makes sense Analia 😊... we would recommend to stop tucking, and try to avoid sitting for prolonged amount of time ... see if that would make things feel better 😊

my pelvis is tucked naturally (im 28 and i think its been this way since my teens) it always finds a way to fit in a chair this way and it takes a lot of effort from my lower back muscles to prop myself up, when i do it also fixes my hunched upper back and my neck becomes straightened. Im trying to fix this, ive started doing light deadlifts and stretching the hip flexors+hamstrings but i dont think im consistent enough. 3-4x a week is not working. Any recommendations?

Believe it or not, SST founder Dana Sterling also had a naturally tucked pelvis, due to a scoliosis. We have found in numerous cases it takes precise systemic stretching of the system to allow for a less tucked pelvis and to allow a very minimal amount of natural lumbar lordosis to occur... it is doable! An X-ray now shows that she has a slight lumbar lordosis... If you want to look up a video that will help you make sense of this, look up our video called Fascia and the mystery of chronic pain... they key is proper evaluation... in order to “create more room” for our bones to line up better with gravity. We hope this helps 🙏

I pray you answer i am in NY and can't possibly go to arizona. I have already had a lumbar laminectomy 10 yeaes ago and have been to physical therapist and chiropractors and DO's telling me they can't help me after so many treatments. I can't stand or sit more than 10 minutes at a time on a good day. The only semi relief i get is lying on my left side with a pillow between my knees . 😭🥺 any advice no matter how small. Thank you

Hi Karen, we are so so sorry you are going through this 😔😔 we would recommend looking for an experienced Rolfer or structural integration therapist (10+ years experience) in your area. They would specifically work on your Myofascia imbalances. We hope this information is helpful 🙏🙏🙏

For the love of God, I hope you answer because now I’m very baffled. I understand you completely if the issue were tucking your pelvis 24/7 and 365 days a year. But this cue is necessary in some gymnastics stretches, yoga postures and energy channel (think chi/internal energy). I could do a video and say never do a biceps curl because it is unnatural, knowing full well, as you do, it is momentary. So, help me out. Have you ever gotten good at yoga or gymnastics? Do you know about the energy channels in Eastern medicine or martial arts? Finally, how about cat/cow in yoga while breathing to work the spine? Your very professional appearance and skeletons make you seem like a real expert but these things make me wonder if you have enough experience to opine a partial story. Partial stories are irresponsible; however, if you stand by this for even moments in stretching, I’ll be listening and possibly heeding the advice. You look great, fabulous lighting, great arm sculpting, nice video length and love your voice and presentation. Thanks.

Hi 😊 great question. There is no need to tuck the pelvis in certain stretches and yoga poses in our opinion. A bicep curl, while not natural, is not detrimental or harmful. A pelvic tuck may be “ok” for people not dealing with hip/neck/low back pain, however we don’t believe it is necessary. We believe that the “tucking your tail bone” cue in both Tai Chi & Yoga ... is a possible loss in translation, of keep your spine not “straight” but in line. Bottom line, if anyone is dealing with incontinence, pelvic floor pain, low back pain we highly suggest to immediately stop tucking the pelvis ... try doing your yoga and stretches without tucking and see for yourself what you might feel like 🙏😊

Disagree with you when we need to stretch hip flexors it's utmost important to tuck the pelvis Also biomechanically naturally pelvis get tucked is healthy movement to protect lower back so doing it consciously only enhance that effect

No phase of hip extension, does the pelvis tuck… respectfully we do not agree that this is a functional strategy.

Well... Yeah? But also don't put your entire weight on your butt having it strutt out more than naturally, otherwise you curve too much in the lower back while it looks like you have a bigger stomach than normally. It's a balance... Right?
