Two simple loops - Roland S-760, Akai S900, Alesis 3630 - French House

Two rough beats 'mixed' together
Beats assembled on the 900, various samples to make up the loops are in the S-760. I really wish I had an interface with more IO so I could play with more interesting routings.
I shouldn't have stood in front of the camera

For sure. There's so many ah-ha presets on there besides that, like the Wrath of Zeus and WDPK voice pitch shifters. So much fun.

@IanCanefire The S-760 is 16-bit and serves as my 'hi-fi' sampler. It has a very polished sound that enhances whatever you put into it. It also has great filters and envelopes. Where it falls short is in ease of use. The Roland S-series programming paradigm is rather hard to understand, and the manuals are cryptic to the point of being useless. Still, I put up with it because it sounds so good, and compliments a 12-bit sampler like my Akai very well.

Love the live performance aspect you have going on and the tunes groove. I would play them in my sets. I have been using Roland rack samplers for a long time and have never used the front panel. Always mouse and external monitors. Good stuff and inspiring.

Are you going to post perhaps maybe a "how-to" on sampling on the S-760? That would be great!

Nice you got them in the Ikea Rast shlelf! I had two s900s in one of those for a while, now I have my synths in it. I want to modify it to have rack rails but that's gotta be the cheapest rack you can get!

Dope demonstration mate, it sparked some questions in my mind, hope you don't mind me asking. 1. Is there a particular reason/preference for having your beats on the S900 and the instrumental samples on the S-760? 2. I'm guessing that the whole arrangement is sequenced and the jam revolves mainly on muting/unmuting and controllng filters by hand? 3. 2:18 the snare stopped and the first instrumental sample also stopped. Was coming from your DAW's MIDI sequencer? 4. How are the 2 samplers connected to the sequencer/DAW? Is there need for any MIDI sync so both samplers receive notes at the same time?

Ableton Live. I'd love to get an MPC or something to sequence with and leave the computer behind but I haven't had any money to sink into the studio in a long time.

Lower price. I got an MPC a few months ago to replace Ableton as my main sequencer and I love it.

Super video mate, had a great time watching! 9 years later do you still feel the same way about this? I recently bought an MPC One to replace Ableton. So far I prefer the MPC for chopping samples and sequencing. But for warping/timestretching, filtering and other FX I much prefer ableton. So I’m in this weird back and forth between my laptop and MPC… I suppose back then one wouldn’t use MPCs for FX except filtering, then everything else would be done through external hardware.

Nice set up man. Is your 3630 modded? Just picked one up cheap after seeing Alan Braxe use one and am reading that they are no good unless modded. I don't really need it for anything other than an effect but an wondering if I'll need to mod it. Cheers

Tell us more about the Roland S760....Do you like the sound, is it easy to program, is it the same bit rate as the Akai? I am thinking about buying one since it is so cheap right now. I already have two Yamaha A4000's and an Akia z4. nice video.

Price but also the main thing is that the MPCs are not as easy to set up to play lots of instruments at once chromaticaly.

I just use the front panel. Never had any issues with it besides it just being a bit convoluted compared to other samplers. It's not difficult per se, just a bit tedious.

Do you use the external accessories when programmng the s760? Thinking about picking one up but I heard its a bitch to use lol. I see your comment above about the manual being cryptic. Once you get used to it tho, does it become relatively painless to operate? Thanks

You are the man! btw, can someone tell me why people so often use Akai S models rather than mpc's? It's beacause of lower price or different sound? MPC is way more comfortable to use...

Lots of people had amigas and ataris to sequence with, plus you save space with rackmount units. The S series were also pretty powerful
