This was an interesting song, with two totally different sounds. The versatility and creativity shown here is impressive. And we discuss Jam and Jelly.

Black Sabbath is an innovator of progressive rock. They will switch from one beat and groove flawlessly to a completely different beat and groove and then end up back where they started. It’s what makes them, them

The song is filled with metaphors pertaining to conception, birth, love and life....the love a father has for his child. The line "Seventh Avent Unicorn is waiting in the skies" is referring to the babies mobile over her crib. "Father of Creation takes me from my stolen tomb" = birth.

It sounds quite similar to Stone Cold Crazy by Queen, so this might be a subconscious homage. Tony and Brian May have known each other since 1973 and are best friends.

I don't recommend it as a review, but the track before this on Sabotage is "Don't Start (Too Late)": it's under a minute, but it's a great intro to "Symptom of the Universe". Instrumental, short and sweet. Lots of that on the Ozzy-era albums.

There was an SNL skit years ago where Horatio Sanz played the part of Ozzy in the studio recording a new track. It was lunch break and they were taking orders. Ozzy kept telling them what he wanted on his sandwich but no one could understand him, so he had to sing it for them.

" Snowblind" is another tour de force by Bill Ward (but in a more subltle manner) . For the Dio era check "Sign of the southern cross" ( or nearly any track from "Heaven & Hell") . The pinnacle of Tommy Iommy as a soloist is "Dirty woman" . They've also record many outstanding tracks where they step aside from the rock genre (the floydish "Planet caravan", maybe my favorite track, many acoustic guitar gems as "Fluff", some proto jazz-rock space rock "Air dance" . They had so much creativity that I believe that we have not exploited yet all their legacy to this day.

FYI....At its core, the song seems to be about the power of love to transcend time and space. The lyrics take the listener on a journey through time, from the supersonic years to the present day. The "symptom of the universe" mentioned in the song could be interpreted as a manifestation of this timeless love, which is "written in your eyes."

The singer for Deep Purple, Ian Gillan, followed Dio, and also the very underrated and great Tony Martin also followed, and had the second longest tenure after Ozzy. I suggest Into the Void from 1971; Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath from 1974; and When Death Calls from the Tony Martin era in 1989. Tony Iommi (eye-OWE-me) was the music writer and lead guitar player who was a creative genius, and was the one who hired each of these singers.

I don't think so. I've seen interviews of him from the early 90s when he had just moved to LA and he's pretty much the incoherent, stuttering wreck we now know him by. I've seen a fairly recent interview of him when he was in England and he's still a little impaired sounding, but much more coherent than we're normal used to. I think the fault is his American doctors who prescribed him so many pills for various things. By some counts he was taking 40 different pills a day. Take him out of LA and away from his doctors and he's a lot more coherent!

After Ronnie James Dio left the band, Tony Iommi and Geezer Bultler met up with Ian Gillan in a bar one night to recruit Ian to become the lead singer for their "new" band, they all got really drunk and Gillan agreed to be the singer for the new band (Ian Gillan was the singer for Deep Purple in the past) Management convinced them to keep the name Black Sabbath as it would automatically "sell", they made one album in 1983 called Born Again, the last album with Bill Ward, it was the most polarized album in their history with some fans loving it and some hating it, in fact when Ian Gillan heard it while driving in his car, he threw the cassette tape out the window lol he hated everything about it, especially the album cover which was done without the bands knowledge or approval. Check out this track, heavy, evil and mind blowing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYC7fYWrqp2Mh7s

Absolutely one of my favorite Black Sabbath tunes it has all the elements that very hard start to that brilliant acoustic ending in my opinion it works very well. This was also a period that the band and management were not in agreement leading to this album. Being a fan of Black Sabbath since 1971 I find I like the Ozzy years the best as far as the Dio albums they were much more polished 80s metal but very good. The Thrill Of It All might also make for a good reaction video it’s been enjoyable to watch your channel.

This song celebrates whatever you believe in. It's all a symptom of the universe and a love that never dies. The second verse has 3 parts...the first is for those who believe in earthly spirits, the second part is for those who prefer heavenly beliefs, and the third part is a bit whimsical by referring to the unicorn. Just having fun.

Over the years I've seen people being quite dismissive of Black Sabbath because they're mostly known for the Paranoid and Iron Man songs, which as good as they are, are fairly basic songs. It's like people knowing The Beatles solely for I Want To Hold Your Hand and Day Tripper. Many of Sabbath's 70s songs are like two or three different songs melded together.

OK, let’s talk. First off this is a highly underrated album!!! Yes, their biggest hits came earlier and I love them but this 1975 album in my opinion is their musical peak. The songwriting and musicianship is fantastic and Ozzie‘s vocals are through the roof. The singing he did the second part of the song over the acoustic part is some of the best vocals I’ve ever heard him do. And Coach I 100% agree with everything you’ve said about heaven and hell. We all have our opinions and in my opinion Black Sabbath without Ozzie is NEVER Black Sabbath! Yes, I liked Heaven and Hell when it came out, but I can’t listen to it now. You can keep Dio and his singing about wizards and castles and all of that crap lol. Come on, taking Ozzy out of Sabbath is like taking Robert Plant out of Zeppelin it’s not the same band. Of course, yes that’s just in my not so humble opinion lol. 😆

Yep, most Sabbath fans from the early 70s share your opinion . I too bought Heaven and Hell when it came out in 1980, and it was good, but it wasn’t Sabbath . Also “ Dungeons and Dragons” Dio was kind of a buffoon, prancing around constantly flashing the sign of the horns .Just silly , juvenile stuff. Nice to hear Coach Cast TV opinion , because it’s fresh ears, immediately seeing Dio era Sabbath as generic 80s hard rock .But Dio has his rabid fans and he is a good hard rock si get, a,tough I don’t care for his vocals - always sound over-the-top and affected to me ….

Don’t apologize for your opinion about the brief period Dio fronted Sabbath . Most Sabbath fans from the beginning far and away prefer the 70s Sabbath . The 80s brought a lot of new fans who liked the style of heavy metal /hard rock of that time, so they prefer Dio , who brought a generic hard rock sound to the band for two studio albums . You can listen to some more Dio Sabbath, but it’s the same generic 80s stuff…Sabbath was and is influential for their first 4-6 albums, not for anything they did with Dio.
