hello from France :) I have a quick question what is the difference between the foxtrot and the two-step?? your vidéos are very great and well explained.
@countrydancex
@countrydancex 5 жыл бұрын
Bonjour. Thank you for watching. I love this question. Foxtrot and Two Step have similar rhythms and both travel around the same line of dance, but that’s where most of the similarities end. We classify Two Step in the Rhythm category and the way your body moves and connects with your partner is closer to Rumba, Cha Cha, or swing/jive (without the hip motion of course). I could have this conversation all day ha!

How do you change back from the promenade to regular holding pattern? On the 2nd slow count?
@countrydancex
@countrydancex Жыл бұрын
Well... We'd consider it kind of a one way street. There are lots of other better pattern that would achieve that better. Try step 3 in this beginner series :-)

Love the videos. Wife and I are getting ready for my sons wedding and are taking local lessons. These are a big help, but what is the purpose of the promenade? Confused 🤨
@countrydancex
@countrydancex 2 жыл бұрын
We use the promenade as a “connector” meaning that it is a good way to transition from one thing to another. We don’t actually just dance a promenade down the floor :-)

leader is your signal to her push out left hand keep shoulder to switch?
@countrydancex

We would never use the word "signal" when referring to lead. We prefer communication. Lead is active rather than something she would "hear" and respond to.

My hubby and I are taking dance lessons now. I love to dance, but never really knew if you should start with quick quick or slow slow. Our dance instructor said either, but mostly slow slow, but you instruct quick quick. Is there a standard with the start, or not really? I love your videos btw!

Hi there! That's awesome about taking lessons :-) Well ... Technically, Two Step could start with either rhythm (It's a 6 count pattern to 4 count music). Two Step originally began a long time ago as Foxtrot which is counted SSQQ. A small minority of dancers still count it that way. The problem is that Two Step IS counted, danced, and structured QQSS. Everything starts on the quicks and ends on the slows. If you begin a new pattern such as a turn etc, it will almost exclusively begin with the quicks and finish with the slows. So... why would we start with the slows when most turns will be finishing when the basic should be starting? Whether you take the first step with the quicks or slows doesn't matter. If you start with slows, you're just starting in the middle of the step rather than the beginning. Once you start dancing and doing turns, you will no longer be dancing SSQQ as your count will change to QQSS. It's kind of irrelevant.

It depends on the region you are dancing in. In California, it is always quick-quick-slow-slow. The key to social dancing is to be flexible to the styles danced in a given area. Some folks to S-S-Q-Q.

@@countrydancex Not having been a teacher, just taking lessons. I find that teaching men to lead is not common. Personally, for me I want to be taught a heavy hand at first. By that I mean gross exaggeration of style so that as I progress in knowing more and more individual steps I can get lighter and lighter. Also ... information such as, for example, in 2 step turns start on the first quick not the second. There are always exceptions but tbh I think that early in instruction exceptions are rare. Advance moves bring the exceptions in. Keep up the good work.

I bet you’d like this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4S2c4V4gc9-Z7M Quick note… turns technically don’t start on the first quick. They start at the end of the last slow :-)

@@countrydancex Watching it now. But it does go to prove a point the mechanics ( the minutia of the turns ) just aren't explained. I mean it's fine to have a choreography of moves but it will go to crap if you can't lead it or lead it wrong. Also ... men need a class in leading, One of my greatest struggles was I'd not lead with my whole body. I'd more / less kind of push or pull into a turn vs making my body move as a unit probably not right to say but I'd lead from my hands vs leading from my hips.

Like so many online lessons, he doesn’t explain how to cue the partner that this should happen. How does she know to go into promenade? And which version? In the first version, he doesn’t even move his feet differently. Is it a hand gesture that indicates? These lessons are choreographed so the teachers never tells us how to cue our partner in the moment on the floor. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hi there. There are some people in some areas that START slow slow quick quick… but Two Step is (and always has been) quick quick slow slow. There’s nothing wrong with starting mid basic with slow slow, but everything in Two Step begins with the quicks (every turn or move begins with quicks and ends with slows). When you begin with slows, it could make starting movement easier for some people, but you’re essentially starting mid-basic. Then you’ll have to dance a basic and a half before starting a turn (always on quicks), or start after half a pattern.
