www.carpathianadventures.eu www.crosstrainingenduro.com If a two stroke revs in the forest, does anyone hear? If you are spectating at Red Bull Romaniacs 2019, you betcha. Two strokes were something of a dinosaur in the 21st century but hard enduro has seen a resurgence for the smoker. It's day 2 of the offroad competition here at Romaniacs, and if you want to haul ass, you need to be mixing gas. You can't beat a two stroke for tough terrain. High power to weight ratio. Less centrifugla mass so you can throw them around more. An incredidibly simple bullet proof design. Less likely to overheat. Fast, fun and affordable for Romaniacs. And even with modern power valves they come on with a hit of power when ridden in anger. It takes some skill to ride fast over slippery terrain like these Romanian forests. Throttle control and clutch slipping are needed to avoid letting them get away from you at Red Bull Romaniacs 2019. Mid range revs? Then the two stroke becomes the mild mannered Clark Kent of dirt bikes. Although there have been very few breakthroughs in design, tweaks over the years have seen two strokes become very tractable, with many claiming the modern two stroke often feels like a four stroke until you really rev the tits off it. Power switches, mapping and power valve adjustments can take the bike from wild to mild with basic adjustments. These days, four-stroke power delivery depends a lot on how the bike is mapped. Before fuel injection, a lot of 450 motocross bikes had a hard hit and a lot of power that needed to be controlled. Even before that, the earlier air-cooled four-strokes felt heavy and more lethargic. Fast forward back to the present, mapping can make a four-strokes power incredibly linear and usable, or it can give it a hit hard enough to be clearing Supercross triples out of 2nd gear corners. Firing twice as often still means a two stroke will break traction easier than a four stroke, but the gap is closing. At low revs? The two stroke is king. In most cases as long as you have some throttle on they just won't stall. Unlike a four stroke which often gives no warning and suddenly your gonads are slammed into the triple clamps. The 300 two stroke will keep grunting up a hill at just above idle as long as you can hang on and keep that throttle applied. Of course you can ride a four stroke at hard enduros, as long as you don't mind the engine sounding like a long wet fart all day during Romaniacs. Anyway enough two stroke worship! Overall results? At the end of day 2 Alfred manages to slip ahead of Romaniacs veteran, Graham Jarvis. But lets take a look at some everyday heroes from Australia and New Zealand. These crazy mofos have spent ridiculous amounts of money and time to fly over here and be beaten to a pulp. Today I watched so many of you riding into the halfway mark looking wrecked but undaunted. We salute you, you crazy dirt muppets at Red Bull Romaniacs 2019. The Romaniacs prolog is over and its day 1 off road. The competitors have an hour long drive out to the starting point of Rau Vadului in the epic Carpathian mountains. And here I run into a small problem. The organisers make it a tricky process if you want to run a helmet cam. And since I don't know anyone running a helmet cam, I'm going to substitute footage from a two day ride we did prior to the event. Our guides from Carpathian Adventure say we'll be doing some bronze tracks, so hopefully this vid will give you a rough idea of what to expect from bronze class. Carpathian Adventures are based in a small village near Sibiu and after only two minutes we are straight into a long long hill climb. Immediately it's tougher than I realised. I don't find out till later that day, but my bike is so new it doesn't have mousses or TUbliss fitted yet, so the air pressure is very high to prevent punctures. And I can't figure out why I'm not getting grip. It will lead to a pretty big crash later. Under the dead leaves are roots, sticks, clay and all sorts of things you can't see. Bummer I didn't have enough room in the luggage for my armour for our Red Bull Romaniacs tour lol. I look back at this footage now and wonder why we all felt so beaten up at the end of each day.
