Thank you Simon for featuring another puzzle of mine ! Being part of that Zodiac Project was an honor and a real challenge for me. When I was given that set of circles to work with, I quickly realized it was not in my setting habits to work with that kind of constraints. Usually, when I set something with S-cells or modifiers (doublers, mirrors...), part of the solve is about locating the cells containing these modifiers. Therefore, it took me quite a while to find what I would like to do with those circles. I needed a trick to get some ambiguity about the nature of those circles. And that's how I came up with the thematic idea of the gemini puzzles, which allowed that kind of ambiguity. I actually think that concept of "twin" grids could be used with some other constraints/modifier and lead to very cool puzzles. Also, get well soon ! 😀

ViKingPrime checking in here - so happy to see this featured and so happy to see another puzzle by Christounet (one of the greatest sudoku setters of all time, for those who may not be familiar; like Simon, I'd been wondering when we would hear from him next). Just to explain a bit about this "Zodiac Project" - it's a sudoku chain letter. That's actually it. I set a puzzle to kick things off, using a disjoint set of the digits 1-9 (meant to resemble a constellation) and then handed off a grid with a new layout of disjoint cells to the next setter, who just happened to be the illustrious Marty Sears. In fact, his puzzle was featured on this channel as well! along with a few others, such as one by Florian Wartmann. A lot of phenomenal sudoku has come out of this series, some of the best I've seen. I've no doubts we'll be seeing more entries up in lights, given the consistent calibre of setting this series has kindled. So yes, you nominate a setter, you hand them a predetermined disjoint set and tell them to make a puzzle, with no other constrictions. Once they're done, they do the same, and on and on it goes... I believe MaizeGator has been tapped to set the next one, quite excited to see what they do with it!

I think the solution check should mention r7c4 instead of r9c1 being a doubler. you pick r7c4 within mins of starting, but you don't know which r9c1 is a doubler until about half way through the solve, at which point you have a 50/50 chance of having to swap all your digits.

I finished in 136 minutes. This puzzle breaks my brain in so many ways. It felt like trying to uncross your eyes to focus on two separate image, but my brain kept trying to converge them into one. The solve itself was surprisingly clean, though. I think my favorite part was determining the bottom left digit to be an 8, by ruling it out as a 27 pair with another circle in box 6, due to the double circle cage being too high no matter which ones were chosen. I don't know how one would even come up with this concept, let alone construct an entire sudoku around it. It is supremely genius. This has to be one of my favorites. Great Puzzle!

I agree. I cheated by scrubbing rapidly to see which of the grid had the doubler R9C1 and R8C7 (trying to ignore anything else in the grid) and started from there and of course ignoring that I knew where the R9C1 doubler was to (try to) solve the puzzle
@TwistPickleАй бұрын
Agreed, though Simon doesn't actually figure out the (relative) doubler status of r8c7 until much later in the puzzle. It'd be much kinder if r7c4 marked which puzzle was which
@mse326Ай бұрын
I disagree. I think part of the fun in solving comes from realizing the symmerty means it can only be broken by finding a doubler and that you can still use the sudoku on the 234 to continue on without knowing which grid is which

71:28, surprised I got to the end, especially on my phone with the two grids being TINY and being constantly worried about mistyping something (which I did once!). I ended up just assuming a high/low in the center of the grid at the start and ended up being lucky that worked out with the rule about which r9c1 was the high and I didn't have to retype everything. EDIT: And it took me a bit to see that a digit in a circle would see the digits in BOTH grids at the same time.

Not sure how I feel about this one. Loved the ruleset, and really loved the solve up until the point where I had found all the circled digits. After that I felt the sudoku was a little bit fiddly and unrewarding, but I admit that may have been a feeling caused (or at least exacerbated) by the grids being so small. Possibly it would help if the grids were positioned one on top of the other (rather than side by side) with the ability to scroll. Anyway, just my 2c.

so I had to watch the whole thing at 1.5x SIZE but I was okay with that, having fun with the matched grids for cages and single locations. But I keep thinking technically that the answer for the entire thing has 2 solutions where you just swap the two grids, which is why you just arbitrarily decide at the beginning like you said once you discovered a relationship. also at 40:16 I was waiting for you to remove like one more digit or so. In Box 6 in both grids there is a vertical 2 slice in column 8. The maximum was 10 or 12, and now the left side can at minimum if 8 taken be an 11, and right maximum a 10, so the 8 isn't possible on the left anymore and you can place a 5 in row 6 Column 8. which means it's either an 8 or 9 total, which the right side eliminates the 1 in row 5 column 8 but otherwise keeps it's 234 and 56. I'm excited for you to spot it, you've got great eyes for this stuff. 40:34 you are always funny when you can hear us "shouting". 45:19 YES! 46:56 I'm thinking the cage on the left with 1 and 8, that last digit in the cage SEES A LOT, it can only be a 3 4 or 9 I believe, and that should put some strain on the right cage, being that it has a total now of 12, 13, or 18. 51:59 the minimum for the right grid cage i'm talking about in column 9, the minimum is 12, 1+5+6; I have to imagine that puts a lot of restriction on allowing the left to be a 4. Actually since you can't do 1,6,6 uh... there is no way to do 13 anymore. Yeah so it's not a 4 on the left it's a 9 and it's an 18 cage. 55:57 I am glad you are verifying it.
@markp7262Ай бұрын
41:35 finish. I was almost finished when bad math reared its ugly head. After misadding cages, I found that I was not correct in the puzzle. It required a bit of a rewind, since it wasn't a simple case of swapping a pair of digits. LOVE LOVE LOVE the logic on this one. Excellent!
