Stew, I too am a short guy and I notice on almost every video you have posted with short guys swimming in the sub 8 range is they almost never fully glide after the scissor kick. Almost always the shorter guys are flutter kicking right after their scissor kick. I try fully gliding like you and other CSS coaches say but it just does not work for me. Should I just do the flutter kick method or try to get better at gliding?
@StewSmith1828 жыл бұрын
They glide some. As long as you were under 10 strokes per length you're not going to destroy the rest of your PST. I would recommend 6 to 7 max.
@StewSmith1828 жыл бұрын
You can swim without fins either way. However when you wearing fins you're going to want to stay on your side.

stew, I am also a short guy and watched all your previous videos. What my question is it bad if I don't turn on to my stomach when I'm gliding when doing my css swim and just stay on my side? I've seen many do it but was wondering if it will slow me down.
@StewSmith1828 жыл бұрын

@xxredrumgunsxx8228 жыл бұрын
is there a reason why I see everyone gliding on their stomach then their side?
@StewSmith1828 жыл бұрын
Sure - that is the way I teach it. It is A way to do the stroke not the ONLY way to do the stroke.

When swimming the 500 yrd pst, is it better to do the whole thing on your strong side? Or switch from strong to weak?
@StewSmith1827 жыл бұрын
If you can stay on your strong side the whole time - do it. If you have to change every length (rules of the instructor) then you have to learn both sides. Never a bad idea to learn both sides as you will be doing this with fins on both sides for miles in the ocean.

what is competitive time for 25m, assuming it was maintained for 500m ??
@StewSmith1828 жыл бұрын
There is no competitive time. I logical pace would be 25m in 25 seconds for 500m = 8:20. Solid swim using the CSS.

Stew Smith Thank you for replying.....I purchased your CSS video, it's really good.

A good pace for 25m in 25m in 25 seconds...maintained for 500m = 500 seconds = 8:20. That is a competitive CSS swim when preparing for Spec Ops schools

Hello sir I'm a taller guy I'm 6'2 and I do so much better with flutter kicks it feels easier and more consistent.
@StewSmith1822 жыл бұрын
Try this - kick off the wall and stay in the glide position but constantly flutterkick - see how far you get before you need to breathe.
@StewSmith1822 жыл бұрын
You may understand how much of a waste of energy flutterkicking is in the CSS stroke.

@@StewSmith182 yeah I realized this morning for my daily swim my legs were giving out after 300 meters. So should I practice on my kick and focus on that technique and do I just limit my flutter kicks or glide more?
@StewSmith1822 жыл бұрын
@@user-gd4so4iq1d yes - one kick per stroke. - see www.stewsmithfitness.com/blogs/news/css-help-fix-your-kick

i’m going in for pararescue and i started training 3 weeks ago, i swim a 25yrd in 30 seconds but i’ve never swam a full 500yd, the longest i swam was a 250yrd because i was too tired, is there any way i can swim faster and not get tired out so quick? i’m also a long distance runner but that hardly helps 😂 my past test is in a month btw
@StewSmith1826 жыл бұрын
It takes time to get into swimming shape. Does not matter how great you run - this is a different animal. Keep practicing and be patience. Swim 1500 a day (5-6 days a week) in order to get in swimming shape for a 500m swim. Try this: Swim 500m warmup Repeat 10 times 50m free style sprint 50m CSS or breast stroke

For the 500 yrd swim, what time differences are expected between a 25yrd and 50yrd pool?
@StewSmith1828 жыл бұрын
Maybe 20-30 seconds slower on the long course.

I can pass any test with the conventional side stroke. But when I go to the combat style under water, I can only get a couple of strokes and completely run out of breathe...I just can't do this technique where you go under water!
@StewSmith1824 жыл бұрын
Great! You don’t have to use the stroke. You can use breaststroke or the side stroke. Don’t sweat it.
