I find there's an interesting time between when your fingers first warm up, so they're ok functionally, but the muscle memory isn't fully in control, so your 'go to' patterns are less likely to dominate your playing, when interesting lines which you don't normally play can surface. Ditto with melodies and tunes, so it's good to to have some quick recording stuff handy before it all evaporates.

Nice! I was just having this conversation last week with my daughter about her drawing and how frustrated she gets if it's not perfect. I told her that you'll hear all the time about how sometimes the best work someone has done they came across it by accident. I also told her she needs to actually finish the work whether there's a mistake or not. So she can then go back and see what she feels she needs to work on. Because behind every great work there's always a lot of previous instances we learned from to get us there.

Gary Burton touched on this topic a bit... he comments on having an "out of body" experience thinking like an audience member and asking "what would he like to hear from the fellow playing vibes!" Jeff, this is so important and I never hear anyone talking about this any more. I’m in my late 60’s and this is how I was taught to play, over 40 years ago. It feels almost like a lost art at these days. I would add that for me, I made the mistake of just improvising and never put emphasis on learning note for note solos from top 40 music. My playing has suffered because of that. I wish I had spent 70% of my time improvising and the remaining 30% learning note for note. I’m curious of your thoughts. What a great video! It’s so refreshing. Nobody ever teaches on improvising these days. Thanks!
@JeffMcErlain2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this David! I really appreciate it. I grew up improvising, I was always shocked to learn people often wrote their solos! @@JeffMcErlain I just want to add something else here ... I discovered your channel when you started doing the lockdown sessions .. so I think that was 2 1/2 years ago .. and it coincided almost exactly with me deciding to spend 2 ro 4 hours a day learning to play better electric guitar .. I had never played a lead guitar line in my life .. each week I would work with those sessions and started also purchasing your Truefire courses ... (I now have them all) and since then .. working with your material .. I have become a much better guitar player .. both rhythm and lead ... so I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for the time you take to educate and teach via KZbin and Truefire .. I have put the work in .. you taught me that was the key to learning .. and it was .. and is .. . I have probably asked some stupid questions along the way .. only to find that the answer was just down the road .. a combination of work on my part .. and listening and watching what you were doing ... the biggest discovery for me is that guitar is not a linear learning experience but an accumulation of a number of things along the learning path .. and I have you to thank for all this ... oh yeah .. I am now 72 .. apparently you can teach an old dog new tricks ... thanks for everything Jeff .. I learn something new from you every day ... I look forward to whatever you have to offer in the future ... all the best ...

This is something that I’ve struggled with and contemplated for many years. I continue to wonder how much of improvisation is comprised of a large repertoire of licks, passages and intervals, as opposed to playing something in the moment that is truly unique and based solely on the changes being played.
@JeffMcErlain2 жыл бұрын
The idea for me is a mix of all of the back end stuff. Scales, arpeggios, intervals, licks, ideas, etc. The uniqueness comes from your interpretation of those skills applied in an improvisatory situation. I try not to play licks verbatim and just experiment. So that experimentation starts to become your personal vocabulary.
