I feel it is obvious to most what a sham this is but given the precedent of a judge deciding guilt on his own without a trial and moving directly to sentencing would be worse!

Young people driving while under the influence of various substances are not a danger to the establishment and certainly not to leading figures in the government so governments don't prioritise it. They have over the years brought laws in to deal with it so thats that as far as they are concerned, the fact that the police have nowhere near the funding or resources to enable them to enforce the laws doesn't seem to come into it.

When someone refuses to enter a plea, then a not guilty plea is entered automatically. There's nothing unusual about that, I understand that it's normal court procedure.

Are you basing it on the fact the media/parliament aren't allowed to speak about it? This is perfectly usual in upcoming trials. This is so the trial isn't prejudiced. We ALL want justice and no possibility of a loophole exploited by his legal team. Wait until the trial before expressing your views. The families of the victims deserve justice...

Actually you can, we have had laws in this country for decades which enable the police to stop and question people they believe maybe about to or have broken the law or maybe are going to commit a more serious offence. As I write this reply, across the country police officers will be stopping drivers they suspect may be over the legal limit for alcohol levels in their blood while driving a motor vehicle. Some people will be found to have exceeded this level and will be prosecuted. This has nothing to do with a person's freedom being infringed upon, since 1967 it has been illegal to play Russian roulette with your own and other road users' lives by driving under the influence of alcohol. Over the years other substances have been quite rightly added to the list. Driving under the influence of alcohol/ drugs etc is extremely dangerous, and anyone can be a victim of those that do, people have even been injured by drunk drivers who have crashed into their homes. It is only right the police step in to try and stop this from occurring, if that involves stopping motorists who it turns out haven't broken any laws that's just a minor inconvenience as far as I'm concerned. Had the police stopped that lad with the laughing gas he would have received a fine and lost his licence for a year, but his two mates would still be alive and he wouldn't be spending the next four and a half years in jail ( he won't serve more, he'll get parolled ) and he wouldn't have to wake up for the rest of his life with guilt of his actions.
