Super. I really like geared locomotives. I have always wanted to build a fantasy Shay, Climax, Heisler, or Willamette (Or ?) with "C" or "D" geared trucks, instead of "B" trucks. Can you imagine how large and powerful and majestic a four truck Shay, Heisler, or Climax would be with four eight wheel geared bogies supporting this giant geared steam locomotive with an equally huge tender behind. I bet it would pull the wallpaper off of the wall. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

I got one of these used and the casing the trucks are made out of was absolutely terrible plastic. It was fracturing and breaking apart like peanut brittle. I tried salvaging it as best I could, but there is only so much glue can do. I was going to 3D print a new truck casing and swap everything over, but in the end I just bought some new all-metal trucks and swapped them out. I have the spares still sitting around and maybe someday I'll get to it, but right now I didn't have the time for it.

I think you will be happier with the metal ones! If the old plastic ones were kept out of the weather and in good condition then they could be repaired. I also have one of the bad ones and will be using it for a different project.

Very informative video. What a nifty way to make a tunnel from tubing. Super cool!. Great train layout!

Hmmm. I had broken washers, so I measured them and 3d printed some out of resin.

I thought about printing them too, then I found these replacements.

Do you have a video on removal of the back truck of the 2 truck Shay? Years ago, when I received mine, the rear truck wasn't connected. Long story of why I'm just now getting around to fix it and was looking for information from someone who's already done that.

Hi Jim, I am not sure if I videoed doing the rear truck. As I recall the rear truck is just a mirrored version of the front truck so it should not be any different. Is it broken gears that is the problem?
@JimWelch-l2o Жыл бұрын
No, it's not the broken gears. The center screw is backed all the way out and it looks to me like I need to remove the motor to get to it. So, if it's just like the front truck, what's that video title? Since you had it in your hands, I thought there might be a video of how to remove it.

@@JimWelch-l2o Hi again Jim, can you send me a photo of the screw that is backed out and maybe a couple of extra photos so I can get a better idea of the screw you are working on? My email is trainmanhowe@gmail.com

Hi again Jim, not sure if this will help. However, when you remove all the screws from the bottom plate of the truck, the top plate can also be removed, which may give you access to the screw you are asking about. That is because two of the screws from the bottom plate on the truck, on some of the trucks, are long screws that hold the top plate. Not sure if all this makes sense? Photos are much better than words, what was that old saying, one photo is worth a thousand words?
