In this video me and my artists friends came together to draw two truths and one lie. The game is that everyone has to figure out which of our 3 draws are the 2 truths and which is the 1 lie.. You won't believe some of the drawings we have to pick between.

I‘m kinda sad about that stereotype: Art teacher just want you to really learn the basics which would make - even your anime and cartoon art - better in the long run. Abstraction in artstyle works better if you know the basics / how to draw realistically :(

One thing I loved about my middle school art teacher was her openness towards stylization and creativity yet still teaching the important and practical bits of realistic pieces! Hopefully more teachers like herself are hired (she wasn’t worth the horrible pay)

I also got bad grades in high school art, my teachers didn't respect anime, and in college, my 2D design teacher gave me a bad score on a light and dark drawing I did of two of my own characters adding "I've seen these before"

I also got bad grades in art in high school. I really didn't like the teacher so I didn't bring any materials and one day she decided she was fed up with my behavior and wrote me an F. Didn't care tho lol. She was really annoying. She just gave a theme and let people draw for the whole 40 minutes. She kept drawing half of everyone's drawing like one time I asked her how can I draw a hand and she just took my pencil and started drawing. I remember saying "I asked how can I draw it not if u can draw it for me" lmao

Ouch, sorry you had crappy art teachers. I remember when I was like 9 in school once we had a random art session, art was never a consistent class back then it was just something they threw in every now and again. Honestly I think if we ever had a free slot they just randomly chuck an art session in because they couldn't think of anything else :D. Anyway I remember during one of these random art sessions they asked us to come up with and draw a god, they said it could be anything and we had to come with what it was a god of and it's powers and such. When they asked us to do this I was currently obsessed with The Legend of Spyro games that had just come out. So for my drawing I just drew Spyro and basically ripped off the games purple dragon powers for my description (changed it a little bit). When we were done the teacher basically had all of us show our god designs and talk about their powers to the whole class. When it was my turn a boy in my class called out that mine was a game character and the teacher didn't give a shit :D. Didn't even need to defend myself as the teacher didn't even ask me if that was true and just moved onto the next kid. Kind of shows how little they cared for those random art sessions :D.

My art teacher was very nice about me never doing anything I was told and breaking out the Fancy Markers for seniors and serious art kids to draw my weeb shit. Those are some of the only nice memories I have from high school. He was a really wonderful guy.

I felt that comment about them not being very respectful of anime style art in highschool. I was super, super into anime at that time and it's all I wanted to draw. My art teachers, however, didn't think that style worked with certain mediums and marked me down for it. Which was ridiculous because they never specified it had to be certain styles or anything. If that was the case I would have followed that.

Part of that is because high/middle school anime drawings kind of aren't great? There might be a general distaste for it that doesn't help, but often times, a lot of the issue is that these kids aren't great at drawing/are unpracticed to begin with, so their anime drawings look even worse in their attempts to look stylized. There's a short video essay out there explaining this whole phenomenon. Source: I made shitty anime art in middle school, then made much better anime art near the end of high school.

The whole anime art not being recognized in schools is so true. I got a D on my final exam art project in collage and the professors notes on it was that the style was lazy and unrealistic. I spent weeks on that acrylic painting. But he did say it was quite creative to have the painting on a piece of wood rather than a regular canvas. I tried

I understand the art thing for Ross’ option #2 drawing. I draw webcomics and I have horror stories about art professors from grade school to college. One high school teacher asked my sister if I was “special needs.” Which she meant to mean that I was dumb. I was more saddened by that than offended. Anyway, art teachers are weird. Most ironically don’t understand the process.

Definitely knew that the second one for Ross was the lie. Artists, despite being artists, usually don’t get the credit they deserve in school because it doesn’t “fit the mold” of what art classes in school want you to do (the absolute irony of it isn’t lost on me). The others are so bizarre but just possible enough that people don’t lie about stuff like that.

the story of getting caught drawing in a Christian school reminds me of a time i was on a bus to my local church for an afterschool like church club (i only went for the prizes for getting questions right) and i was drawing an anime girl and it was only guidelines at the moment so it was two ovals, a few lines, and a faceless head and this guy who was way too old to be there but his grandma was supervising the bus saw me and started freaking out and calling me names and his grandma comes over and she is calmer but mad too and this grown ahh guy SCREAMED, full on spit flying, everyone turned around, SCREAMED at little 4th-5th grade me and the grandma, instead of scolding her grandson, tells me "honey, just close the sketchbook" and i was tryna explain "dawg shes gonna have clothes" but i was fr panicked cuz that was scary and they called my mom and she got MAD at them and pulled me from the club.

To add to what people are saying about art teacher's and how they react to anime art, I actually had an art teacher that was the exact opposite. It was obvious he loves anime and he never put anyone down for drawing in that style. Funny story, during the pandemic and everyone went online, he, get this. He hooked up his camera and zoom to motion capture or whatever it's called and had a model rigged up like a Vtuber. He taught all his online art classes as a Vtuber anime boy. It was ridiculous and I absolutely commend him for that! He was also just really good at teaching us really helpful and fundamental art stuff and just legitimately passionate about his job. I felt like I won a lottery to have gotten an art teacher like that.
