When you were applying the thermal pads for the active backplate (the backside of the GPU) you forgot to add some small pads to the 'top' and 'bottom' sides of the central chip. I have the active backplate for my 4090 TUF OC in plexi and I'm just happy with it. It looks pretty cool with both sides lighted up (vertical mounted). The normal one is just so thin in my opinion. And, from what I experienced, there is less heat in the case, bc there is no backplate transporting the heat from GPU into case (which it does even if there are no chips on the back). All the heat is transported away from the parts and blown out of the case. The inner of my case stays pretty cool, even on long gaming sessions and in warm ambient. There is no heat building up between GPU and Motherboard. And yes, I know, the block was 400€ here in EU, but rly. The parts for my PC costs me ~9.000€, so I don't care about 200€ more for the active backplate version of the GPU-block 🤷♂

Scientist here: adding one degree to room temperature does not add one degree to component temperature; assuming only temperature changes, it adds a bit *more* than a degree. The actual amount it adds will vary on a lot of other parameters, but it comes down to hot air being less dense than cold air and (combined with the increased starting temperature) having less capacity to take heat from the hot components of the system.

Something I can say about this actual system is that when I installed, my o-rings were faulty and I had to use the extra set that came with the parts. I could not hold pressure and finally chased it down to the 2 o-rings they instruct you to take out and put back in. Almost like they know its not going to pass. Ultimately I'm extremely satisfied with the performance. I have two 360 rads running in a custom loop cooling my cpu as well with a GPU temp @ 30C (38 hot spot) and a coolant temp between 28-30C. The SMD ceramic components are not Resistors, they are Capacitors. Generally speaking SMD Ceramic Capacitors are brown and resistors are black (exceptions do exist). Also resistors can often have a code on them telling you there value, capacitors usually do not. And because there not resistors and rather caps they dont need the thermal pads on the back for cooling. What needs cooling is everything on the "other" side, VRM, GPU, RAM. The active backplate just pulls heat "trough" the PCB, because a lot of components like RAM do dump there heat in there primarily. And the ceramic SMD components do not step down any voltage but rather smooth out any ripple because they are capacitors. SMD ceramic capacitors have very low ESR, (equivalent series resistance) so they can respond to fast and spiky voltage changes, thats also why you usually have a ton of them at the backside of the GPU.

I have an ABP full set on a EVGA 3080Ti, weighs a ton but does drop temps. Due to the weight (think its about 7.5 Ibs) had to vertically mount it. It just about fits with an Asus Z790 but still allows clearance for a P360MP radiator in the bottom of a Lian Li 011D XL with fans. Only negative is the PCIE cable Gen 4.0, it pushes up against the back block with some resistance. I used the EKWB vertical bracket (expensive but good) and that came with a 200mm. I had to buy a 150mm cable to avoid the push back and its all OK.

ive never cleaned the ram chips with alcohol, but i dont hang my card upside down before putting it together so no chance of the pads falling off.

Jay at 7:45 you mentioned "with all the asus stuff going on recently" can you clarify, should we be avoiding asus motherboards?
@lorsch. Жыл бұрын
You could still use that m.2 slot in a rigid tubing build if you use a m.2 drive with a preinstalled heatsink. Remove the large heatsink of the motherboard, then the slot is much easier to access, even between an active gpu backplate and a cpu monoblock.

on the "second side" the gap-pad was on cut in the middle but then not used after the video cut.. A misstake that was not declared?

The anti-sag bracket can also be an issue depending on which style you have. It might also be an issue mounting horizontally because it might hit the side glass... I have an O11 dynamic xl and it hits the side glass... That block is also smaller than the one for the 3080/3090. I know this because I also went overkill for my evga ftw3 3080ti.

To remove thermal paste, just push to to the side, rather than peeling it off. Wont break and can be retained for later use.

What about an "in & out on each side? Seems to me it would more efficient cooling.

The thing about this gpu is that it's so efficient it's only going to get hot if your running 4k Max settings and or unlocked framerate. 60fps is not an issue for heat unless you're doing something with pathtracing.

Lint free nail wipes are super cheap, around $7 for 1000 wipes, and the great thing is that they do not leave fibers behind. Plus they resist tearing a lot better than paper towels or coffee filters. Also, even better than using thermal pads, would be to use good quality thermal putty. No hassle in cutting pads to size and making sure you have the right thickness pads. Even provides better thermal transfer rates than thermal pads while needing to be replaced a lot less often.

If you can, rotate the PCB rather that prying. That way you can break free the adhesion without potentially damaging the PCB (which can happen)

You mentioned the thermal paste your using. Is artic silver 5 still okay to use. Your pro's and con's would be greatly appreciated on the difference between the two pastes.

The VRMs and Chokes... on mine, the smaller chips are actually just the right size to use the excess from the larger ones, so instead of doing a centre cut, doing an off-set cut uses one pad per side.

Question: does having a thermal pad that's cut to wide cause the heat to transfer all over the thermal pad and not directly go into the heatsink or will the pad only transfer to the heatsink? Just wondering for efficiency pondering

Everyone probably knows this but different screws have different conductive properties. Seems obvious until you take apart an av receiver and you have a bunch of the same screw but three types of metal or coating. I'm assuming it has to do with carbon content like the frames of cars. One screw can be the difference in your subwoofer not working or fm antenna not working

You keep saying, "Don't over-tighten." You might say, "EKWB sells a torque screwdriver to prevent over-tightening of the screws." They cost about $50.00, with shipping, and are worth the price. Keep up the excellent work, and maybe one day, I'll teach you a new trick. I use an old-style ice cube tray to hold my screws and other small parts. Also, I keep it in place using VELCO strips.

jay, I agree. I wanted to get a Corsair block when I did my EVGA 3090 Ti but couldn’t because Corsair didn’t make on 😢😢😢😢😢 so went to EK for a vetor2 which is a good block, but a f’in pain to install

Active backplate MAY bring some degrees, but it is not needed...unless you have VRAM on the backside like the 3090.

$450 water block for a card that already has little to no thermal limitations with the stock heatsink? Lol. I guess it might make sense for SFF but gl powering that thing and fitting the rads.

I did this for my 3090FE: I first had EK's half-ass active back plate, and then later upgraded to the fully active back plate. It didn't make a hell of a lot of difference, even with OC'ing the VRAM like I was. And in total, the card, main block, and back plate together weighed almost 7lbs. I *had* to use an internal support beam for it. It'd destroy the PCI-E slot otherwise. With the 4090FE, I went with EK's standard block and passive back plate.
