This video shows how to wire a two way light switching circuit, or a two way lighting circuit. I believe this is called a three way switching circuit in some countries. This video shows how to change a one way lighting circuit into a two way lighting circuit and also includes schematic diagrams of a basic lighting circuit and a schematic drawing of a two way switching circuit. When wiring a two way lighting circuit you will need two - two way light switches as well as some three core and earth cable to use as a strapper.

Happy Sunday people! Sorry for the lack of videos recently, I'm very busy on site for the next 10 weeks or so and have been for the last 4 weeks. I hope you like this video, it took me considerable time to make all the schematic diagrams (which hopefully make this easy to understand). I also seem to spend more time blocking trolls than making videos right now! Please like and share the video as this helps the channel out tremendously ;-)

The amount of "bright" mates and family members who have asked me to help with two way switching is unreal, for some reason folks really struggle to understand the principle in theory let alone in real life. You've made a really good explanation and anyone who finds it complicated should frankly not be touching electrics.

I coudnt realise why they both had a live when i testerd then without the switches. Your diagrams helped me realise the live and neutral splitting was happening in the ceiling not in the switch boxes. Peoples demos dont show this so maybe a good video for the future. I've been looking for video information on how to wire a light via 2 way switching, my daughter just moved in a house and the switch at the bottom of the stairs worked independently from the one at the top, I couldn't make head or tail of the wiring, or any of the electrician's videos, after watching your it seemed so simple, I screenshot your diagram and looked at her wiring, dead simple, one of her wires had been put in the wrong switch connector, did it the same as your diagram ...Bingo, can now turn on at top or bottom and turn off at top or bottom..thanks for doing this video

Thinking of it as logical operations helped. The diagram specified describes a XOR table. Lamp lights when switches in different positions (one up and one down). The other lighting diagram mentioned in comments (Line to Com, L1 to L1, L2 to L2, Com to Lamp) is the opposite, a NXOR. Lamp lights when switches in same position (both up or down). Given OCD, probably a different diagram altogether: Line to Com, L1 to L2, L2 to L1, Com to Lamp. Reversing, gives you back a XOR. Lamp lights when switches in different positions (one up and one down). 😁

Its one of these things you can understand 100% or 25%. If you sort of get it then you understand it enough to make it work. However you didn't offer and detailed account of the circuits and why they operate as they do... to fully understand it you have to get your head round that I guess. But it was very well explained.. espeacially how you connect both swithes the same way... oops spelling mistake

Being from "across the pond" it's not easy for me to imagine this solution as helpful to understand a 3-way switch. I would have used the 4-conductor cable (black - hot, white - neutral, bare copper - ground, & red - an extra hot) to illustrate the most basic arrangement for a 3-way switch circuit (there are actually 9 or so ways these can be laid out depending on the placement of the lamps - which is why there is much confusion about them).
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yes there are several ways to wire this but I used the method which I find easiest and would be the easiest for most DIY people as they would always be converting a single light to a two way system and would never be installing one from scratch. I have looked at a few sites that show the American way of wiring this and the switches are probably identical, its just the wiring colours that are different. Over here the bare earth wire (ground) has to be sheathed using green and yellow sleeving etc. Thanks for the comment

Thanks for the video, I've sometimes seen this called the "conversion method" where you're adding and additional switch to an existing lighting circuit. There are of course other ways requiring only two wires between switches. #JohnWard has recently done some in depth technical videos on lighting circuits (UK) that people might find interesting.

The joys of intermediate switching! It`s easy enough to figure, intermediate switches have 4 connection terminals, so effectively you cut the pair of strappers, thus leaving 4 ends, which connect across the switch.

Hi, handyman. very happy with all your videos, especially the electrical ones ATM, as I'm now studying to be an electrician. If I am honest: in some cases, my tutor does not explain things the way it should be explained, (very rushed). However, the topic- two way/ three way and intermediate switching are what I'm currently on and it was only when I watched your videos and correspond with your thorough explanation, that was when I understood. on the other hand, I would love it if you could do a video on the easiest way of calculating resistivity in material, as I'm still slightly confused about the method!?Massive thanks to you mate. Kepp up the good work. Cheers. regards Lincoln from Essex`

In Italy it's called "deviatore", which translated is "diverter", more or les. So you get a "diverted light switch point". You can "cascade" them, using as much of them as you want (more or less huh), to control a light by one, two, three or more points.

That's not the normal way to do it, it's actually done much simpler, Line to Com, L1 to L1, L2 to L2, Com to Lamp, I'm an electrician by the way.

thats the way ive done it for the past 4 years but ive done this method a few times, like @Ultimate Handyman said in a previous comment, the way you descibed is the way its done if wiring from scratch (also how ive mainly done it) but this way is far simplier if your just adding in a 2nd switch.
@ppdan
@ppdan 7 жыл бұрын
If you add a 2nd switch just feed a extra wire coming from the 2nd switch to the first switch, you would still have the same amount of cables going from the first to second switch but for it's easier to connect (you don't have 2 wires on a single connection point of the switches) and for safety you can de-energize the whole setup very easily because the live wire has a single point of connection. Make yourself a favor and don't use the method described in the video. I would even recommend that the poster of the video changes his video because using this wiring is a very bad because even an electrician who comes and sees that will be like "wtf who the hell did this mess"

Nice video and there are no videos out there explain it the way you do thanks a lot and I have a question plz what if you have 2 lights instead of one and you want to switch them on/off from either plz would be nice to see a video from you about that but no rush thanks and keep up the good work
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. If the two lights are in the same room and already wired up it is not simple to change them to work independently to be switched on or off from two different switches and would require a lot of work and re-cabling.

There are in the same room and at the moment I can switch it on from one and go down switch it off from the other one but if the switch are not in the right position i won't be able to switch it on or off if either one is in the right position but thanks

This is a brilliant video, really nicely done. Do you have a video for the following issue: I want to replace a double switch unit with a triple switch unit to add a new light to the system and control that from the new third switch. Can i spur off L1 or L2 on one of the existing two switches? Any other precautions? The current switch is quite close to the consumer fuse box so I think it is protected by the master fuse. Thanks in advance
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yes you can spur off from the permanent live terminal which will be either L1 or L2, however you need to be careful not to mix upstairs and downstairs circuits. You would also have to ensure that the neutral and earth are taken from the same lighting circuit, so never mix and match the wiring from upstairs and downstairs. The lighting circuit should be protected by either a 5Amp fuse or 6Amp circuit breaker. Thanks for the comment ;-)

Thanks. Out of L1 and L2, is there a test for which one is the permanent live? On the current system the switch has COM - red, L1 - YELLOW and L2 - BLUE. When i did a continuity test with the power off, the switch closed the circuit between COM and L1. Does this mean L1 is the switch live, and therefore I tap the other, L2 for the permanent live. Presumably I have to put a jumper wire between both COMs and both L2s? otherwise no live and no return for the 3rd, new light? I am actually just feeding a one off ceiling rose for the 3rd light, so presumably it just needs 2 core and earth, not 3 core and earth. So I just snip off and ignore the 3rd wire on a 3 core wire? Thanks in advance

A simpler connection: Live to com. Sw1, L1 Sw1 to L1 Sw2, L2 Sw1 to L2 Sw2, com. Sw2 to lamp, and lamp to Neutral.

Yeah you'd need 3 core +E to get the line back to the original switch. I think that method has some advantages though. It's much more intuitive and clearer for people to understand and it's also much easier to expand with extra switches should you want the lights to be controlled from 3+ locations.

How do you connect the lamp in series. There are only 3 wires and 3 slots in the switch. Connecting the lamp to the common as kyle A suggests is a lot better method.
