Previous owner of a Land Cruiser. Current owner of a H1/H2 and TJ but I just picked up a 06 Xterra "off road" with a 6 speed. Has a tuner and lift...just lovely. It's on 285s and I can scratch 3 gears hitting it. I love it. Was going to get a 4 Runner but everyone and their grandmother has one..literally. Thank you and subbed!

Back in 2001, my dad bought his Xterra. Too basic and not really for off roading. But damn, it was durable and lasted for over 300,000 km without a single repair on the engine or the transmission. In 2016, I bought it from him. I only lifted it by adjusting the torsion bars and installed some all terrain tires, just for the looks. However, the non-usual maintenance started to become a serious and expensive problem. So, in 2019 I had to sell it. Now, watching this video, makes me want it back.

Back in 2001 it was probably in the top 3 best off the shelf offroaders on the market in north America, and marketed as such. Mite fall short when compared to a Rubicon Wrangler due to its front and rear diff locks. Other then that I think its more then capable of holding its own offroad. Most jeeps back then had a solid front axle and that for the most part is a offroad advantage, but if comparing stock vehicles the Xterra came from factory with bigger tires and i think that edges out the Cherokees and grand Cherokees from factory. Since the jeeps have that solid front axle it is more easy to put lift kits on them and turn them into super offroad machines. But its not fare to compare vehicles that are modified as the sky is the limit. So in other words one could modified a jeep or xterra into whatever they please.

If I recall correctly, I think my Xterra came out with some BF Goodrich tires from factory. Not a huge deal but they were a good start. And, yes, bigger than the competition back then. I really loved the Xterra's first and second gens. But when I saw the next one, I just said "It's over for the Xterra". Didn't even look like a real offroader anymore and, if you really wanted to make it capable for a decent trail, you would have to put some serious money in modifications. But that's just me, maybe some owners can tell good offroading experiences with those Xs.

Round headlights are the best! Seriously though. There's not enough 1st Gen Xterra content on KZbin. Keep it up.

Such a great video guys! I have a 2wd 2002 with 165k in great condition that been with me since 2006. Almost got rid of her...but have decided to keep it and get it up and running for adventures. Although i can't go that deep into the bush..I can certainly explore some national forest roads in East TN. Thanks for making these videos and sharing your adventures...great video editing also...Happy Holidays! Wish i could find an affordable rear locker solution!

Thanks, I was on a Gamber 500 rally once in my GMC Jimmy, had 4x4 problems once we got into the woods so i had to do the hole thing in 2wd. Now thats nothing special considering the type of vehicles people bring on those rallys, but it put in perspective how far you can go in 2wd. You can go far as your determination and right foot will allow.

Are you guys running open diff or stock gen 1.5 lsd diff or did you mod your diffs? I had an auto locker in my 1st gen 4runner that was awesome off-road but totally sucked on road. I was reading that the Xterra/frontier LSD diff can be modified with friction disks from an older pathfinder diff or with disks from other Xterra donor diffs to make the break away torque higher. I guess 2002-2004 diffs only have 25-40 foot lb of break away torque and 00-01 have about 90ftlbs. Doing the mod makes it more like 250-300 ft lbs. I’m about to buy a 1st gen Xterra so I’m researching options just wondering if you are totally stock on these runs? I like that your rigs are not overly modified. My experience is that lifting IFS is kind of pointless … 32” tires are enough most Of the time especially for this kind of overland stuff.
